Fisichella's time in a 2006 spec car was a 1:17.479.

For reference, the best time in 2005 was a 1:15.561 by Pedro de la Rosa in the McLaren MP4/20.

Several drivers had problems today, Kimi Raikkonen's running was very limited due to a gearbox problem and an engine oil leak. Both Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve had problems with their BMW Saubers, Nico Rosberg suffered a steering hydraulics problem on his FW28 and Tiago Monteiro had a couple of problems on his MF1 Racing car.

The new Toro Rosso STR-01 took to the track for the first time with Antonio Liuzzi driving.  Liuzzi's best time was over a second faster than Albers in the MF1 Racing car. The car had one electrical problem during the day.
In related news, Red Bull confirmed that Gerhard Berger has purchased a 50% stake in the Toro Rosso team.

Weather conditions were sunny then cloudy with air temperature reaching 19 degrees and track temperatures reaching 23 degrees.
