Drivers ventured onto the track and the thing that struck them was how bumpy the resurfaced track was. Cars were bottoming out and the mechanics set about raising the ride height to compensate.
McLaren experimented with different set ups as well as a new rear wing for this race.
Kevin Magnussen became ill and has bee replaced by Oliver Bearman, initially just for the sprint component of the weekend. This will be re-evaluated post the sprint.

Q3 and, after showing reasonable pace in FP1, the Aston Martin duo failed impress by not progressing into FP2. The team has gone back to an earlier floor spec with hopes of finding the performance previously shown in the season.
Q2's biggest casualty was Lewis Hamilton. He has complained throughout both sessions about the bumpiness of the circuit and being unable to extract the best out of his Mercedes.
Again, Sergio Perez struggled. He had been given a different chassis for this event to determine if that was the root of his problems.
Q1 had Oscar Piastri qualify fastest after being consistently 0.3 seconds slower than his team mate, Lando Norris over all previous sessions. Lando Norris aborted his final lap so it my have just been track evolution that enabled Piastri to take the pole.
Oliver Bearman had a chance to qualify well however made a small error in turn 2. He should have aborted the lap as he still had time to regroup and recharge however pushed on to the finish the lap. To rub salt into the wounds, his time was deleted for track limits. Oh well, he will learn.

Both McLarens got away fairly evenly and gave each other space through turns 1 and 2. Oscar Piastri then controlled the race from the front at the same time keeping Lando Norris within 1 second for DRS. This then kept the sprint race combatants fairly close with just the usual ebb and flow allowing the passing attempts at the end of the DRS zones.
Max Verstappen managed to get past Charles Leclerc and set off in pursuit of the papaya duo.
It looked like McLaren may have messed up the position swap to enable Lando Norris to gain additional points in his chase of the world drivers championship however, with just over 2 laps to go, Piastri lifted in the first DRS zone allowing Norris to swing by. Timinig was perfect as the virtual safety car came out soon after and the race was stabilized.
The VRS Ending notification came on as the drivers commenced their last lap. Max anticipated the restart and crept up along side of Piastri as the VRS Ended lights came on but was unable to pass Piastri.
Following the race, the stewards determined that Max Verstappen had not left the required time delta while under the safety car conditions and was then given a 5 second penalty dropping him from 3rd to 4th with Charles Leclerc then inheriting the final step on the podium.

Then the rain came.
Race qualifying was unable to be commenced and has been postponed until tomorrow morning, probably at 09:00 local time.

Qualifying was completed with a total of 5 red flags through the various sessions.
Williams have a big job with both Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon doing major damage to their racecars.
Lance Stroll also had an incident taking his car out of Q3

Max Verstappen in taking in a 5 place power unit grid penalty so his 12th becomes grid position 17.

What a fantastic victory by Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team.
Starting fro P17 on the grid, Max took his time and looked dangerous throughout the race and the expected restarts and safety cars.
This would have to be one of Max's best drives in his career.
The initial start, most drivers got away and immediately aimed for the outside line into turn 1. This opened up the opportunity for Max to roll through the inside line and he had basically passed 4 cars. Then it was for him to take each opportunity as it presented itself.
The red flad came out for Franco Colapinto's Williams and, on the restart, performed the same maneuver to take the then leading Esteban Ocon in his Alpine. From there, it became a lead that no one would be able to run down.
The Alpine duo, as a team would have to be the next best with both drivers finishin on the podium. Again, they both stayed out andmade the correct call on when to take their stops for new intermediates. I don't know why Ocon didn't cover the inside into turn 1. I may just be that they realised that their race wasn't with Max.

Next event, we are back to the USA for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Enjooy your 3 week break befor the final 3 events over sucessive weekends.
