Is Monza in trouble?

Post by rah » Fri Nov 18, 2005 7:44 am

Evidently the local court in Monza has decreed that all motor racing at monza should have appropriate silences on, including F1. I really think that F1 may have a problem with that. The ruling follows the complaints of local residents. They say that the noise form motor racing has made there life a living hell.

Man if that is hell then I am making friends with Satan. Maybe we should organise for a resident exchange program. We fortunate people blessed with quite abodes can swap with the poor people of Monza for a couple of weeks around the F1. At their cost of course.

Interestingly the track at Monza (first built in 1920's) predates almost all the houses in the area, let alone residents.

The ruling judge said that motor sport is a "superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the environment". Well is probably right on that one, but it is fun.

The City of Milan that co-ownes the facility are confidant that they can overturn the ruling.
Ok, Lewis may win the WDC in 07, but Sato will beat him in 08.

It's just another example, rah, of what people refer to as the "nimby" syndrome, a/k/a, "not in my backyard". Are those people nuts? Monza's one of the signature tracks on the F1 circuit, AND they're only starting to complain about it now?? What are those...people....thinking?

On a much smaller scale it has been happening in aus capital cities for the last decade or so with pubs. People move into a neighbourhood knowing full well that the local pub has live music, they then complain about the noise level to the council, and the pub can no longer play live music. The local bands have a harder time finding somewhere to play and the pub puts pokies in to get more money in.

This sort of madness drives me insane. There is a tradition in Britain, of people moving into houses next to airfields that have been there for donkeys years, only for them to start complaining about the noise levels. Sadly, this is not just a British affliction as the Italian neighbours of the Monza race circuit are proving. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the local judge has said that motorsport is a ?superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the enviroment? Socially useless ? The judge chooses to ignore the many thousands of Italian jobs reliant on this racetrack and the likes of Ferrari who would not exist if it were not for racing.

Not many years ago, such comments in Ferrari?s heartland would have earned the slightly bonkers judge a good hiding, dear old Enzo must be rolling in his grave at the idiocy of some of his countrymen.
