Jul.6 (GMM) Honda team principal Ross Brawn has played down the likelihood that Mike Conway will graduate from GP2 to a formula one seat next year.
The 24-year-old driver and reigning British F3 champion is currently an occasional test driver with the Japanese team.At Monaco last month, the Briton further caught the attention of the grand prix world by winning from pole position in a support race.Conway, managed by former F1 racers Martin Brundle and Mark Blundell, later said he is hoping a vacancy arises soon at Honda, whose current drivers Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello are out of contract at the end of the year."His win at Monaco did impress a lot of teams but there are only one or two drivers who make it out of GP2 for next season," Brawn told Kent News."You almost need to decimate the championship to become part of a formula one team. You really have got to be quite exceptional to get there, but I wouldn't turn my back on Mike at Honda though," he added.Brawn explained that Conway has the potential to make it to formula one, saying he has driven "reasonably very well" in GP2 this year."He has been doing a great job for us in testing and I have been very impressed with him."The difficulty is formula one is such a high standard and very few drivers make it. I hope he can get there," Brawn said.
