Jun.6 (GMM) MCLAREN-MERCEDES

After a slow start in the damp morning conditions, Lewis Hamilton set two times late in the afternoon good enough for P1, with Heikki Kovalainen half a second adrift in P4. "It's still too early to judge where we are compared with our competitors," said a cautious team boss Ron Dennis.

BMW-SAUBER

Robert Kubica looks set to continue his run of impressive pace and consistency in Canada, going second quickest - first behind Felipe Massa's Ferrari, and then in the afternoon Hamilton's McLaren - in both 90 minute sessions. Nick Heidfeld managed top-six pace in both sessions, but ultimately five tenths off Kubica's pace.

-

FERRARI

Felipe Massa's late lap in the drying conditions delivered him P1, but he was only fifth in the afternoon after marshals pulled his failed F2008 behind the protective barriers. "From what we could understand today, it is very close between us and our main rivals," he said. A low key day for Kimi Raikkonen; fifth in the morning and ultimately third. "I think we can aim for the top spots over the rest of the weekend," the Finn insists.

-

RED BULL-RENAULT

A competitive morning, although David Coulthard's morning P8 became P12 in the afternoon. Mark Webber, despite harmlessly spinning into the gravel at one point, stayed 7th in both sessions.

-

WILLIAMS-TOYOTA

Not including Webber's Red Bull, Nico Rosberg ended the day 'best of the rest', with teammate Kazuki Nakajima half a second behind in the decisive dry afternoon session.

-

TORO ROSSO-FERRARI

A conspicuous day for the new STR3 and Sebastian Vettel, who was sampling the Montreal layout for the first time; twelfth and ninth respectively in the sessions, just over a second off the major pace. "I think we are in better shape than we were at the end of the first day in Monaco," he said. Sebastien Bourdais was a bit off the pace, confused with his "very different" setup and the misleading experience of his Champ Car days at the same circuit.

-

TOYOTA

Timo Glock pipped his teammate for pace in the damp morning, but he ended his day watching the action trackside after slapping a wall. Jarno Trulli had a lot of spins but upped his pace to end the afternoon session tenth.

-

HONDA

Nothing short of a terrible day for Jenson Button, who was consistently among the very slowest of the twenty drivers on track. "We just lacked any form of pace," he lamented. Rubens Barrichello was slightly happier with his car, but points on Sunday seem unlikely.

-

FORCE INDIA-FERRARI

Close pace between the team's two drivers and no mechanical issues, with Giancarlo Fisichella's 14th quickest time in the afternoon the highlight.

-

RENAULT

Nelson Piquet's woes look to continue in Canada, although his limited running in the afternoon - when he was slowest of all - was caused by a gearbox problem that stranded him in the pitlane. Fernando Alonso also ended the day down the timesheets when he had to abandon his car that got stuck on the kerbs after a spin.
