Jun.8 (GMM) The Max Mosley-led FIA has vowed to hold firm in the face of reports that Bernie Ecclestone may be pushing to lead a 'breakaway' championship.
Although no teams have publicly backed wanting to race in an independently-regulated category, the breakaway rumours are a further sign that Mosley is finding it difficult to command unity in the wake of the sex scandal."If Mosley has done such a great job ... why is there a lack of support for him in the paddock among the teams, manufacturers and the media?" commentator Martin Brundle wrote in his Sunday Times column today.The former grand prix driver said the sex scandal was simply "an ideal catalyst" for the ructions that are now taking place, but an FIA spokesman sounded in a fighting mood when asked about the latest intrigue at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve."There are those who have sought to destabilise the FIA and undermine its independent authority for their own gain," he said."The overwhelming support the president received from the General Assembly confirms that our membership will not allow this to happen. Anyone who thinks that this is not the case is deluded."
