Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials have announced what the event schedule for the upcoming United States Grand Prix will be the weekend of 30 June-2 July, 2006. In addition to the main event, the Formula 1 world championship, three additional series' will be in action: the Indy Pro Series(Indy Racing League support series), Porsche Michelin Supercup, and Formula BMW-USA.......

The 30 June 2006 schedule is as follows......
--Indy Pro Series practice, 8:45-9:20 am
--Formula BMW-USA practice #1, 9:50-10:20 am
--Formula 1 practice #1, 11-noon
--Indy Pro Series qualifying, 12:30-1:15 pm
--Formula 1 practice #2, 2-3 pm
--Porsche Michelin Supercup practice, 3:30-4:15 pm
--Formula BMW-USA qual. session #1, 4:45-5:25 pm
--Porsche Michelin Supercup qual. session #1, 5:45-6:25 pm

The 1 July 2006 schedule is as follows.......
--Race #1, Formula BMW-USA, 8:40-9:15 am(14 laps)
--Formula 1 practice #3, 10-11 am
--Porsche Michelin Supercup qual. session #2, 11:30-12:15 pm
--Formula 1 qualifying knockout sessions, 1-2 pm
--Liberty Challenge at the Brickyard, Indy Pro Series race, 2:30-3:05 pm(25 laps)
--Race #1, Porsche Michelin Supercup, 3:30-4 pm(16 laps)


The 2 July 2006 schedule is as follows.......
--Race #2, Formula BMW-USA, 9:30-10 am(14 laps)
--Race #2, Porsche Michelin Supercup, 10:25-11 am(16 laps)
--Formula 1 drivers' track parade, 11:30 am
--Formula 1 grid presentation, 11:45-12:15 pm
--United States Grand Prix, Formula 1......1 pm(73 laps)

On May 28th, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway(IMS) held the 90th running of "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing", the Indianapolis 500. On the weekend of 30 June-2 July, 2006, the "Pinnacle of World Motorsports", Formula 1, will rule the IMS roost. But, how, pray tell......do they turn a 2.5-mile oval.....into a 2.605-mile road course???

Here's a list of some of the things that must be completed before the Formula 1 world championship arrives.............

~~250 concrete barriers(130 8-ton, 60 6-ton and 60 4-ton) are used to create the USGP pit lane and close off certain roads inside IMS(such as Hulman Blvd., a/k/a the USGP backstraight)
~~installation of fencing around the F1 paddock
~~two temporary grandstands inside IMS must be built from the ground-up; within hours of the checkered flag on 2 July, they are the first things to be removed from IMS
~~within 24 hours of the Indy 500, IMS officials and track personnel began to remove the inside concrete barriers and catch fencing along the oval's turn 4 and turn 2, where the USGP course exits and enters the famed oval; heavy machinery is used to remove the 8-ton concrete barriers
~~tire barriers are installed at various places along the road course, along with signboards and safety barriers.....43,933 tires are used to construct all the tire barriers used
~~the starter's stand for the 500 is removed so that the gantry which houses the starting lights for the Formula 1 USGP can be constructed at a height of 20 feet over the famous yard of bricks(a/k/a the start/finish line)
~~all the oval striping on the track surface must be removed and the road course striping is painted onto the track; also, the starting blocks for the F1 cars are painted onto the frontstraight
~~cleaning crews will spend days and nights cleaning everything in Gasoline Alley....from the Legends Row building to all the IndyCar Series paddock spaces and garages so that, when the Formula 1 teams arrive following the Canadian Grand Prix, they can began to set their workspaces up for the F1 race
~~F1 specified temporary signage, similar to that at every other Formula 1 event venue, must be installed at various points around the road course
