THE CLIPSAL 500
The V8 season kicks off with the mini enduro Clipsal 500 this weekend
The Clipsal 500 consists of two 250km races, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday.
There are 2 practice sessions on Friday followed by Qualifying. This is followed by The Top Ten shootout also on Friday
For the spectator and driver alike it is 3 days of flat chat action.
The circuit contains a major part of the F1 circuit. It is 3:22 kms of concrete canyon street circuit. It has 14 turns, is hard on brakes, and has high speed turns and straights. Drivers have to be fit for this track, especially if it is a warm day. Several have been carried from their cars over the last few years.
Make a mistake here and the walls bite, rarely can a car continue if it leaves the blackstuff.
The Q record was set in 2004 by M Ambrose in his BA Ford Falcon, at 1:21:9363. The car was several coats of paint skinnier after that run.
Mark Saife holds the race record lap for the Clipsal 500 with a time of 1:23:1903 set last year.
The Telecast will be on CH 10 1pm til 5pm both days.
Foxsport will have replays, check your local guides.
Dont forget your picks in the (sanity prevailed) 8 n pole competition

Firstly, the unconfirmed report on Skaife is still just that, with the change that the prang occured in P2.
P2 placings are
Jason Richards 1:22:4429
Whincup
Skaife
T Kelly
Tander
Dumbrell
Winterbottom
into the 23's came
J Courtney
Radisich
R Kelly
Wilson
Lowndes
Johnson
Morris
Ingall
S Owen
Murphy
Davison
Bowe
Canto
B Jones
McConville
A Jones
J Bright
A Gurr
S Richards
into the 24's
Holdsworth
Bargwanna
Luff
Marshall
Fernandez.
Now to me that is a strange looking grid. Perhaps some of the more noted runners have gone backward in set up since P1.
To see Brighty that far back is amazing. Murph appears to be struggling, yet his teammate is 7 positions ahead !
Lowndes appears to be off the pace as does Ingall. James Courtney in the other SBR car is making steady progress to the pointy end, while Steve Richards has had a horrid session after being 6th fastest in P1.
All will be revealed no doubt.

Mark Skaife still at the sharp end! I remember watching V8's in the late 80's and he was a seasoned veteran then What's going on? Is that Mark Skaife Jr? I used to love watching the V8's duking it out do they still spit flames out of their exhausts? I don't think I've seen Mt Panorama this century!
I apologies for the out pouring of emotion, When I think of the racing we used to get on the box before Rupert took over the world it makes me weep.
Funnily enough, Skaife's wife gave birth to their second child a couple of days ago.
It is the same Skaife, may I be so bold as to refer you to the " Is Skaife over the hill" thread.
Snowy, whack your tips in for the next race, JV won last year, and she drives a Numbus!.....and would have us believe she has never seen a V9supercar race on tv, much less live
looking at the tips, and knowing The Clipsal you possibly have done
be yourself a favour by coming in late

Walkinshaw has taken over the running of the Holden Motor Sport fivision of GMH Holden Australia, releasing Skaife from many onerous duties ( to which he promoted/elected himself.Snowy wrote:Skaife on pole geeze who'd believe it?
Given that he has a choice of Qualing well, and finishing races, or making an early mistake and going home to change nappies, I expect to see one M. Skaife driving better than ever

Given that one M Skaife has pole for the Clipsal 500 (250km Saturday race)
it would seem to even the less astute amongst us that the UNCONFIRMED report of him sticking it into the wall was erroneous.
But, by cickey, Brighty did.
Intensive therapy on his right elbow will determine if he starts......IF they can rebuild his car
About now (4:50 am AEST) he will be saying to himself as the pain awakens him from his Sebring dreams..........(imho)......the bloody Aston Martin would have got me thru there on line

Yup, about 3ft of solid flame on some corners.Snowy wrote:Mark Skaife still at the sharp end! I remember watching V8's in the late 80's and he was a seasoned veteran then What's going on? They run "full rich" pretty well all the time........if they lean out ........BOOM.
F1 teams would do well to call on a couple of techos here.
