PHILLIP ISLAND........SEASON FINALE 25th - 27 NOV
The Season ends at the beautiful fast flowing Moto-GP circuit of Phillip Island.
Here the Championship will be decided for 2006.
The track:
4:446 kms of sweeping, undulating, challenging, anticlockwise circuit.
12 turns.
The event:
3 races.
Sat - 100kms
Sun 2 x 140kms
The schedule
Fri- 2hr practice
Sat Qualif. 20 mins.
Sat Top Ten 11:40
Sat Race 1 1540hrs
Sun Race 2 11:45 hrs
Sun Race 3 1525 hrs
TV Ch 10 Sat 3pm-5pm.....Sun 1Pm-5pm.
This track is favoured by many drivers as being second only to the Mountain.
A long Straight (Gardiner Strt) flat out in 6th gear leads to RH T1 Doohan corner, entered braking hard from 270kmh to the Southern Loop or T2.
The loop sweeps around to the left taken in 4th up to125 kmh.
T3 is a bend to the left which unsettles the car as you brake for the tight RH Honda Corner down to 2nd gear and 70kmh.
Out of this and straight into the sweeping uphill T5, a long climbing curve leading to T6 Siberia, so named, because if you make a mistake here you wont stop til you get there.
Exit Siberia and continue on a long sweep to the LH bend at T7, thru the Rh bend at T8 then up hill to and into the curve of Lukey Heights taken at 240kmh in 5th.
Take a deep breath now for you then plunge down to the tight RH, 2nd gear 70kmh, reminiscent of Laguna Seca's "corkscrew"
From here it is constant up thru the gears, modulating the throttle for LH sweeping T11, and drive hard for LH T12 and the vital exit line onto Gardiner Straight. Then do it again....and again...and again.
The track is hard on tyres and brakes.
The Qualifying record is held by Craig Lowndes set in 2000 in a Holden
with a time of 1:32:0713.
He also holds the Lap Record, set the previous year
with a time of 1:33:4389
Poles.
1995 Ford
1996 Holden
1997 Ford
1998 Holden
1999 Ford
2000 Holden
2001 Holden
2002 Ford
Phillip Island has claimed many a car.
There is nothing between it and the Antarctic except a weather bump called Tasmania. It can be very windy, and bitterly cold. It can be calm and hot. Very hot. It can go from one to other rapidly.

Craig Lowndes has taken out the opening race of the Phillip Island weekend.
In doing so he has narrowed the gap to Ingall to 41 points in the championship race, and strengthened Fords claim on the Manufacturers Championship.
Marcus Ambrose finished in second place, subject to a stewards inquiry regarding an incident entering the 40kmh pit zone. He appeared to exceed the limit for some metres and had to take to the grass to avoid the rear of Lowndes car. He may have had a rapidly deflating front tire, which caused the incident.
The (unofficial) finishing order was :
Lowndes
Ambrose
R Kelly
Ingall
Murphy
Radisich
Ellery
Dumbrell
Weel
Brebham
Whincup
T Kelly
P Morris
M Skaife
Followed by the rest of the pack.
