For five of ChampCar's rookie class, Wednesday was a chance to test at one of the series' storied venues, the Milwaukee Mile, and it gave several teams a chance to see where they stand prior to the series' visit in early June. (Note....the test was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was delayed a day due to cold conditions at the track; due to sponsor/team commitments, PKV's Katherine Legge was unable to test on Wednesday; she will get her test at Milwaukee sometime next week.) While no official times were posted by series officials, unoffical reports were that CTE-HVM's Dan Clarke was fastest, at 22.43 secs., while Rocketsports' Nicky Pastorelli was slowest at 23.94 secs.

All the drivers in the CCWS will get an additional day of testing at the Milwaukee Mile June 1 prior to the series' visit in early June.

RuSport's Cristiano da Matta was injured in a major accident at Road America today, according to series and track officials. According to eyewitnesses, Shorty was entering the turn 6 area when a deer darted by, smashing the right-front area of his FC/L, caroming off the car's roll-hoop and cockpit, knocking da Matta unconscious. The car then proceeded to skid into the turn 6 tirewalls with his foot still on the throttle. Rescue workers got da Matta safely out of the wrecked car, placed him on a stretcher/backboard and got him to the rescue helicopter, which proceeded to take the 2002 series champion to Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in Neenah, Wisc. According to all reports, da Matta is in good and stable condition; any additional reports will be forthcoming as they arrive.

According to answers.com, a subdural hematoma occurs due to a pooling of blood btwn. the dura, a leathery-like membrane just underneath the skull, and the brain itself, usually occurring after a head trauma that breaks the blood vessels surrounding the brain. In the above report, emergency personnel performed a CT scan on da Matta, which showed the presence of a subdural hematoma, which was then operated on by trauma surgeons at the hospital. Doctors should know more about da Matta's prognosis over the next 16-24 hours.
