If I am not mistaken, BAR and Toyota don't have huge barge boards as such. I guess it all comes down to the design philosophy of the car. But I am no expert and my aero knowledge stops here

They had absolutely no barge boards whatsoever....let alone big ones

(or small ones)
It just confuses me coz they always used to go "OH, No...he has lost his barge boards, thats gonna ruin his race".....now they purposefully take them off and still go like a rocket...

Perhaps they have other aero modifications thet make barge boards superfluous. There are so many widgets and dooflickers hanhing off the sides of cars now, it is hard to tell what does what.

T-K,
BAR haven't been using barge boards since 2003. Toyota also stopped using them from the German GP in 2003.
Their main use is to direct clean air into the sidepods for engine cooling and to direct airflow around the sides of the car.
It appears that both BAR and Toyota don't see a benefit from using them. However, the image below of the side of the TF105 while not having a barge board shows smaller aero devices that direct airflow behind the front wheels
