Rossi has a compound fracture of the shinbone, sustained in free practice, and will be out for at least 2 months.

Rossi Leads Friday Mugello Practice

----Valentino Rossi laid down an opening warning to the rest of the MotoGP field by setting the fastest time in the first practice at Mugello. The Italian is going for his eighth premier class win at the circuit this weekend, and was almost four-tenths of a second faster than his team-mate and Championship rival Jorge Lorenzo.

Rossi and Lorenzo established themselves at the forefront of the timesheet early on and Rossi continually improved his time as the session reached its climax. Inside the final ten minutes he finally broke the 1’50” barrier, setting a hot lap of 1’49.751.

Ending the first practice at 0.369s further back in second place was Championship leader Lorenzo, with Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) pushing up into third with a late surge that left him 0.608s off the pace of his fellow Italian’s top marker. Capirossi then experienced a fall pushing hard through San Donato as his session ended a minute or two earlier than anticipated.

Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) enjoyed a good opening session and was fourth fastest, just over a second off Rossi, with Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda) the highest-placing Honda at just a thousandth of a second behind Edwards.

Ben Spies impressed on his first MotoGP outing on the track by registering the sixth best time, just over two-tenths off Pedrosa. Casey Stoner, who will be looking to pull on the inspiration of last season’s race win at the circuit after his difficult opening to the 2010 campaign, had the worst possible start to the hour-long practice when he experienced a run-off at Turn 15. The Australian had to take his Desmosedici GP10 down into the gravel to avoid hitting the fence, and eventually placed seventh in the session as he completed 15 laps, the fewest of the field.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) and Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) all set top-ten times as well, the rookie running off at Bucine early on just moments after Stoner had, and without consequence. Rizla Suzuki rookie Álvaro Bautista made his return after sitting out the last race at Le Mans due to his recovering collarbone, and was clearly still feeling some discomfort with a best time just over 5.5s off that of Rossi.

Lorenzo Leads Saturday Practice; Rossi Crashes Out

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:02 am

-----Jorge Lorenzo’s lap time of 1’49.282 was the best of the second practice session at Mugello, as the Spaniard upped his pace on Saturday morning. A major talking point in the session however was a crash experienced by his Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi, who had a highside with 15 minutes of the session remaining.

Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso was second fastest at 0.338s behind Lorenzo as he made a noticeable advancement on his RC212V, with his team-mate Dani Pedrosa just eight-hundredths of a second behind.

Rossi ended the session fourth fastest, and was third when he had his crash with 15 minutes remaining at Turn 13. A highside threw the 31 year-old off his M1 prototype and he injured himself as he landed, appearing to be in some pain as he attempted to stand up. Rossi was stretchered off the track to the medical centre where a displaced and exposed fracture of his right tibia was diagnosed, and he will miss Sunday’s race.

Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) was the fifth fastest of the session, with Casey Stoner the sixth and final rider to get within a second of Lorenzo. The Ducati Marlboro rider had a run-off ten minutes in, but was able to return to the track immediately and continue his session.

Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) completed the top ten on the timesheet.

Rossi Undergoes Operation

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 06, 2010 8:04 am

Valentino Rossi underwent a successful operation at the Centro Traumatologico Ortopedico in Florence, Italy this afternoon to repair his fractured right tibia. The injury was sustained when he crashed in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello this morning. He was operated on by Dr. Roberto Buzzi of the CTO, assisted by Dr. Claudio Costa of the Clinica Mobile. Dr. Buzzi made the following statement following the 2.5 hour operation:

"We received Valentino Rossi at the Careggi Hospital, where we made detailed checks in order to rule out any other injuries, and the results were satisfactory. We therefore decided to proceed with the surgery for the exposed fracture of the right leg. We performed a spinal block (epidural) and cleaned and washed the fracture, which was then aligned and stabilized with a pin. The surgery had good results; the alignment was good and the bone is now stable. The wound remains open, as is usual in these cases, and it will be stitched in the next few days with another short surgery. We are confident that Valentino will be able to leave the hospital in a week to ten days, able to put weight on the leg with the aid of crutches.

"It is difficult to say how long the post surgery rehabilitation will take, we need to evaluate the progress of the patient and also what the x-rays will show. But I think that we can reasonably think of six weeks partial weight-bearing with crutches, after which Valentino needs to be re-evaluated, according to his feedback and further x-rays."

Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing Lin Jarvis added, "It was a very sad day today for Yamaha and the Fiat Yamaha Team, seeing Vale in so much pain and seriously injured for the first time in his career. It is especially tough for Vale to have this accident at his home Grand Prix and this will surely be a huge disappointment for him and for all his fans here at the Mugello circuit and around the world. As a team we are very deflated right now because we had our two riders challenging for the championship lead and now that challenge is over - at least for the immediate future. We wish Vale the very best for a speedy recovery and hope to have him back with us as soon as possible."

Pedrosa on pole in Mugello

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 06, 2010 7:01 pm

The Repsol Honda rider will start Sunday’s Gran Premio d’Italia TIM from the top of the grid, with Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner joining him on the front row. Valentino Rossi had an operation on Saturday afternoon after fracturing his right tibia in a crash in Saturday practice.

-----Dani Pedrosa will start the 2010 Gran Premio d’Italia TIM from pole position at Mugello after a superb late lap in qualifying pushed him to the front of the grid. Securing his second pole of the season – his 15th in the premier class – with a time of 1’48.819 on the 23rd of his 24 laps, Pedrosa beat Jorge Lorenzo to the top spot by 0.177s.

The current World Championship standings leader had taken prime position with ten minutes of the session remaining, becoming the first rider of the weekend to get under the 1’49” barrier by four-thousandths of a second, but Pedrosa’s effort means Lorenzo will go for his third straight win of the campaign from second spot.

Joining the Spanish duo on the front row will be Casey Stoner after the Ducati Marlboro man found a more secure base on his bike which allowed him to qualify well, 0.613s off Pedrosa’s pace. His team-mate Nicky Hayden will lead the second row after taking fourth on the timesheet, with Colin Edwards of the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team and LCR Honda rider Randy de Puniet both enjoying positive sessions as they took fifth and sixth places respectively.

Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) will start his first MotoGP race at Mugello from seventh place after an impressive weekend of learning the layout, and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) will also be on the third row for his home race. Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) continues to advance well on his satellite Ducati and he took ninth spot. Another rookie in Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) will also be pleased with his efforts after he placed inside the top ten.

A brace of Italian riders followed in Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki), with Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) next.

Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) and Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) continued to feel the strains of injuries as they came in 15th and 16th respectively, with a notable absence from the session Valentino Rossi. The reigning World Champion was taken to hospital earlier in the day after a crash in the morning practice, and will have an operation this afternoon on a fractured right tibia.

Dominant Performance For Pedrosa at Mugello

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 16, 2010 12:43 pm

note..........from 6 June 2010
Image

-----Dani Pedrosa rode a start-to-finish victory at Mugello on Sunday as he took his maiden win of the 2010 campaign at the Gran Premio d’Italia TIM. The Spaniard, who had only converted three of his previous 14 premier class pole positions into wins prior to this race, never looked like relinquishing the lead he held from Turn 1 of the opening lap and crossed the finish line 4.014s clear of the rest of the field.

World Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) took second place to extend his lead at the top of the standings, ahead of third-placed Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) who gave the home crowd a podium to cheer after Valentino Rossi was ruled out of the race on Saturday following his crash in practice. Casey Stoner took fourth as he beat Marco Melandri and Randy de Puniet in a last-lap dash.

Dovizioso and Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) had rapid starts from the second row and the Italian was up to third before the end of the opening lap as the pair pushed through on Stoner (Ducati Marlboro). Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) experienced a run-off as he pushed for position early on.

Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) was riding hard as he edged his way up to sixth having started from 14th on the grid, and Pedrosa’s pace was undoubted as he set a new circuit record at the front on lap five. Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) suffered disappointment when the front of his Ducati Desmosedici GP10 folded as he went through the downhill Turn 12 on the same lap.

Just past the halfway point of the race Pedrosa’s lead had stretched to 7.309s and his fluid rhythm was maintained as he kept edging away. Lorenzo and Dovizioso were more closely matched, and much further back positions four to six remained open as Melandri, De Puniet and Stoner exchanged blows, with Spies not out of the chase either. Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) unfortunately crashed out to bring a difficult weekend, affected by a lingering shoulder problem, to an end.

Pedrosa’s win became more secure as the final laps counted down, and it was left to Lorenzo and Dovizioso to decide the remaining podium spots. The Fiat Yamaha rider opened up a slender advantage that he did not surrender for the remainder of the race.

The final lap delivered a great display in the fight for fourth as Stoner went through on both Melandri (fifth) and De Puniet (sixth) to finish ahead of the pair, whilst up front Pedrosa crossed the line first with Lorenzo and Dovizioso following. Spies finished seventh in his first race at the circuit, with another rookie impressing in the shape of Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) who took eighth. Simoncelli had recovered from his earlier mistake in time to take ninth, with Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) tenth.

Lorenzo now has 90 points at the top of the Championship, with Pedrosa second on 65. The absent Rossi is third on 61, with Dovizioso’s podium taking him to 58 in fourth.
