Getting ready for Monza.

Nico Rosberg has been busy at Monza. He clocked up 72 laps and a fastest time of 1.22.038. Alonso set the fifth fastest time and Michael Schumacher seventh.

There is a mega test in Monza this week with all the teams present in preparation for the Italian Grand Prix at the end of next week.

There were 10 stoppages during the test. Jarno Trulli (Toyota) and Gary Paffett (McLaren) suffered engine failures. Michael Schumacher suffered hydraulic problems limiting his running.

Fisichella, Webber and Button covered the most number of lap with over a 100 laps each.

It'll be interesting to look back at this session after the race and see if there is any correlation between the test results and the race results

Yes but one needs more data. Fastest lap in testing doesn't mean much. The top 5 from yesterday were separated by under 3 tenths but we don't know what tyres they were on, what fuel loads they had, etc ...
You'll need access to the lap by lap times, then one may be able to establish a correlation. But we don't have access to lap by lap times from this test

Just good to see Williams getting some good results during testing. I agree that we don't have enough data.

Too true, Ed, it is a shame .

I was thinking along the lines of filtering what data was available through the BS-ometer and seeing if anything interesting showed up.

At the very least we may be able to see who was putting in hero laps cos the VIP bus had just turned up

Also sometimes teams test special setups just to find the limits of their cars/engines. Those setups are usually not suitable for race conditions. While they may be good for short term tests they tend to cause overheating problems in the long run. Still it's a common way of unnerving the opponents

Yes I agree that testing is also used to get those components to their limits and beyond. Also testing is used to attract attention and sponsors.

This test however is mainly about tyres and the low downforce kit on the cars. This is the last remaining low downforce track on the calendar.
Only Canada is close and that is run in a medium/low downforce configuration.

We could see a surprise result here!

Thanks man. But I believe Liuzzi appears at the wrong ranking (day 2). Or maybe his time is 1:23.324... Not a life and death situation for sure, just so you know

The fun with reporting best lap times from test sessions!

Unless there are official times, the times reported by the teams vary widely.

For example. of the teams that reported the fastest time on day 2 at Monza; BMW Sauber reported that Zonta set the fastest time with a 1:21.80, McLaren reported Kubica set the fastest time with a 1:22.243, Renault reported Kubica set the fastest time with a 1:22.245.

Of course Honda reported Kubica with a 1:22.244!

And a few media outlets reported Rosberg set the fastest time with a 1:22.038

Go figure!

We'll see what day 3 brings!
