So Ralf Schumacher grabs his first pole position of the season ahead of Jenson Button and Giancarlo Fisichella. Christian Klien, Takuma Sato, David Coulthard, Mark Webber and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 8.

We'll have to check. I doubt it but you never know!
A few would have Button or Fisichella though - I guess!

I'm watching the Speed Channel broadcast of qualifying at Suzuka and I'm not sure if it was either Matchett or Hobbs who mentioned it, but doesn't Ralf Schumacher being on the pole make him the 9th driver to do so this year, and if so, isn't that a new record in an F1 season?

You are correct mlittle!
In 2005 9 different drivers got pole
In 1968 & 1985 8 different drivers got pole!
In 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1994 & 2004 7 different drivers got pole!

The least was 2 in 1965 (Jim Clark - 6 and Graham Hill - 4)

And 3 in 1950, 1953, 1952, 1957, 1963, 1967, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1996, 2002

It is an unusual grid due to the changing conditions from yesterday. Ralf Schumacher starts from Pole with Jenson Button alongside him and Gaincarlo Fisichella in 3rd.

This is a dream result for Japan as the front two cars on the grid are powered by Japanese engines
