Re: The 2019 German GP Thead

Post by cmlean » Mon Jul 22, 2019 7:55 pm

This weekend, we head back to Hockenheim, home of the German Grand Prix and the round where the wheels fell off Sebastian Vettel's 2018 title charge.

Ferrari knew what to do last year and, because of that, I am predicting a Ferrari victory. The difference is that I think that young Chuck will finally stand on the top step. Lewis, forever the competitor, will drive the wheels off his Mercedes but, even with the prospect of a home (Mercedes) victory, will come up just a little short. The changes in fortunes for Red Bull will continue but again only onto the bottom step with Max.
The next 2 places will be as the same top teams but with Bottas ahead of Vettel.
The next 5 places will be a battle between McLaren, Renault and maybe Kimi in the Alfa Romeo or Pierre Gasly in his Red Bull.

Welcome to Germany.
This was a typical practice 1 with drivers pushing their cars and exploring their limits.
Ferrari have shown that they have a good baseline setup with both at the top of the times.
Mercedes, with both Hamilton and Bottas, both had a more difficult session.
Haas have set Romain Grosjean's car up with their Australian setup and he finished well inside the top ten.
On the other hand, Kevin Magnussen finished the session in 13th.
Racing Point have also brought aero upgrades and they seem to be working as anticipated.
Williams ran back to back upgrade tests on their cars with Kubica having the new components and finishing ahead of Russell.

The kerb between turns 16 and 17 seems to be creating grief for many drivers.
Pierre Gasly had an error near the end of the session while coming through turn 17. He ended in the barrier on the pit straight bringing out the red flag. The car is second hand but there should be no penalties as the race drive train was not installed at the time.

Well. What a difference 24 hours can make.
Vettel's Ferrari had a turbo problem in Q1 which stopped him locking in a lap time.
Charles Leclerc then cruised comfortably through Q2 before a fuel problem stopped him also from locking in a time in Q3.

Both Alfa Romeo's were given 10 second stop go penalties which, due to the race being concluded at the time of the decision, became an additional 30 seconds added to their race time. These penalties moved Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica into the points.
Alfa Romeo have announced their intention to appeal the stewards decision.
