-----The sun was beating down on Montmeló on Friday afternoon (37ºC air temperature, 52ºC track surface) as the opening MotoGP practice session of the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya got underway, and by the end of the hour it was Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo at the top of the timesheet thanks to a best lap of 1’43.259.

The Fiat Yamaha rider, who is going for a third straight win this weekend in front of a home crowd, was 0.153s faster than Casey Stoner. The Ducati Team rider had a run-off early on in the session at Turn 1 but it was a minor event, as he went on to time in second fastest on board his Desmosedici GP10 at a track he enjoys.

Completing the top three was Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa at almost four-tenths off Lorenzo as he attempts to fight his fellow Spaniard for victory this weekend. Seeking a consistency in results on his RC212V Pedrosa started his quest in promising fashion on a track he has won races in three different classes.

Team-mate Andrea Dovizioso was 0.094s further back in fourth and will challenge Pedrosa for second spot in the Championship standings in round seven. Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Ben Spies meanwhile put in a hot penultimate lap to shoot up from 15th to fifth inside the final minutes of the session, as he set about learning another new track.

Aleix Espargaró’s improvements continued on board the Ducati of the Pramac Racing team as he set the sixth fastest lap of the session, just under nine-tenths off Lorenzo, whilst Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) will also aim for another consistent result at Catalunya – the Frenchman was seventh, just 0.06s behind Espargaró.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) made a step up towards the end of the session to move into eighth spot, with Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) also taking top-ten times.

The only crash of the session occurred 23 minutes in when Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) fell on his tenth lap whilst running fifth fastest, spraining his already injured left shoulder. The rookie was back out shortly after and completed a further ten turns, as he showed a determination to not let his injured left shoulder hinder his progress any further, and placed 12th, one spot behind team-mate Loris Capirossi. San Carlo Honda Gresini’s Marco Melandri was 14th, as he made his return after sitting Assen out with a dislocated left shoulder.

Wataru Yoshikawa started his first GP weekend as Valentino Rossi’s substitute on the Fiat Yamaha team and was 17th fastest, just behind Kousuke Akiyoshi who continues to fill in for the injured Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team).

Jorge Lorenzo led a close second practice session at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya on Saturday morning, repeating his top spot on the timesheet from the previous day. The Fiat Yamaha rider’s best lap of 1’42.748 placed him just five-hundredths of a second ahead of Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), as five riders got under the 1’43” bar.

Ducati Team rider Casey Stoner was just 0.038s further back from Pedrosa in third spot, whilst Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) took over 1.2s off his time from FP1 to record the fourth best time of the second session. Aleix Espargaró’s continual improvements did not stop, with the Pramac Racing rider just over two-tenths off Lorenzo in fifth spot.

The top seven was completed by Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) and Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) who both got within half a second of Lorenzo. Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) was eighth as he made an improvement to time in at 0.513s off the Spaniard. Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) were also in the top ten, and Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech3) who was fifth yesterday placed 14th in this session at 1.198s off the top time.

There were minor run-offs at the end of the session for Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) – who was 11th quickest – as well as Espargaró and Dovizioso, but none were serious as the trio remained on their bikes.

What Else Is New.........Lorenzo on point in Cataluyna

-----Jorge Lorenzo put in a strong end of qualifying run to take pole position for Sunday’s race at Montmeló, coming out on top in an hour-long battle for supremacy in the session. The Fiat Yamaha rider’s best time of 1’42.046 ended up placing him 0.364s clear, but only after top spot had changed hands a number of times.

Second position was Casey Stoner’s after the Ducati Team rider overcame what was a clear dissatisfaction with his bike to move up several places on his 19th of 21 laps. The Australian did take first spot with his time of 1’42.410, but only momentarily as Lorenzo hit back with his penultimate lap.

Completing the front row after another superb QP will be Randy de Puniet, and the LCR Honda rider’s consistency throughout the session was impressive. The Frenchman led until ten minutes before the end when the battle heated up, eventually timing a further 0.102s behind Stoner to make it three front-row starts in succession.

Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa also made a late surge and he climbed onto the front row for a few minutes before finishing fourth, just eight hundredths of a second off De Puniet in a breathless final few laps. Ben Spies also made a charge at the end of the session and improved his standing considerably, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider following up an impressive day one practice with fifth place on the starting grid.

Andrea Dovizioso completed the second row as he took his Repsol Honda round in the sixth best time. Loris Capirossi will have been pleased with the marked improvement on the GSV-R of the Rizla Suzuki team as he placed seventh, with rookies Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) and Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) also taking third row places, the latter securing his best qualification so far this season.

Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) were 10th and 11th respectively. Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) had finished the session in eighth, but his final lap was cancelled after Race Direction deemed he had cut the track between Turns 1 and 2, meaning his reclassified position was 12th.

Lorenzo Wins in Cataluyna!

Post by mlittle » Mon Jul 05, 2010 4:21 am

-----Jorge Lorenzo became the first Yamaha rider to win three successive premier class races from pole position since Eddie Lawson did so in 1986 when he took his fifth win of the 2010 campaign at the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya on Sunday. The Spanish rider is now 52 points clear at the top as he continued his phenomenal run of form in taking his second win on home soil this season.

Dani Pedrosa (Respol Honda) made one of his rapid starts and led into Turn 1 as he shot through from row two, but then ran wide coming out and had dropped down to ninth by the end of lap one as he lost the advantage. It was an error Pedrosa managed to recover in the early laps however and before too long he was up to third.

Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) had a run-off as he pushed hard to move up the order and Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) started a fight for the lead with Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) on lap three when he overtook to move into first, but it was a lead Lorenzo regained on the next lap as the battle lines were drawn.

When chasing in third place Casey Stoner (Ducati Team) ran off track shortly after and dropped to fifth as Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) and Pedrosa came through, and Espargaró suffered disappointment in his home race when he crashed out on lap six. Lap 14 proved to be an eventful one as first Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini) crashed out when in sixth as he chased his best premier class finish to date. Then, in a decisive moment for the race, Dovizioso also went down as he pushed himself when chasing Lorenzo at the front, rejoining the race in 15th place shortly after.

With that, Lorenzo was clear by just over 5.5s with less than half the race to go, and Stoner and Pedrosa began dueling for second place with De Puniet further back in fourth. Lorenzo’s lead proved to be too much and he crossed the line 4.754s clear to take his fifth win of the season. Pedrosa won the scrap for second by just two-tenths of a second from Stoner, as the podium of the previous round at Assen was repeated.

Fourth place and his best result of the campaign so far went to De Puniet after yet another impressive ride on the satellite RC212V of the LCR Honda team, and in fifth with a superb ride was rookie Álvaro Bautista as he produced a magnificent effort on his Rizla Suzuki GSV-R. Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) continued his progress with sixth place on another new circuit, and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki), Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team), Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) – on his return from a dislocated shoulder – and Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) all finished inside the top ten, with Dovizioso eventually finishing 14th.

Lorenzo now has 165 points with Pedrosa on 113 in second. Dovizioso remains third and is on 91, with Hayden, De Puniet and Stoner all leapfrogging the absent Valentino Rossi to fill positions four to six.

Until Casey gets the membrane in his arm sliced to stop the "arm pump", I think we will continue to see him roll around in 3rd or 4th.
I think he will enjoy the Honda next season...........

There's been a couple of silly season rumors in MotoGP................
----Stoner to Repsol Honda alongside Pedrosa
----Rossi to Ducati alongside Hayden
----Spies to the factory Yamaha team alongside Lorenzo
----Red Bull to sponsor the factory Honda team instead of Repsol
----Suzuki could join Kawasaki in bailing from MotoGP
