Lorenzo Fastest in Friday Practice

----Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) was the fastest rider as the AirAsia British Grand Prix weekend got underway at Silverstone, taking in the new circuit layout in a best time of 2’05.991 in the first practice. The Spaniard set his best lap with just over 11 minutes to go, and the end of the session was marked by spots of rain under a cloudy sky.

One of only two riders in the MotoGP class to have ridden the track before its redevelopment Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro) was second on the timesheet. The Australian completed 18 laps on his Desmosedici GP10, the final of which registered his best time at 0.142s off Lorenzo.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda), fresh off the back of a home podium finish at Mugello, continued his momentum as he timed in at just under four-tenths off Lorenzo’s early weekend marker. Frenchman Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) had set the pace at the start of the session and eventually placed fourth on the timesheet, fractionally under a tenth off Dovizioso as he displayed a consistent race pace.

Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) will be hoping to take advantage of the fact that this is a new track for all and the rookie was fifth. His first run on the layout placed him 1.259s off Lorenzo and he will take great encouragement from the session, in which he placed ahead of Mugello race winner Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa by almost four-tenths. Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) was only two-thousandths further back in seventh.

Top ten times were also recorded by Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing), Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) and Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro), and the riders will continue their adaptation to the track in the second practice session which gets underway at 9.55am local time on Saturday morning.

Pedrosa Leads Saturday Practice

Post by mlittle » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:24 am

The Repsol Honda rider became the first and only rider so far this weekend to get under 2’05” in the final practice before qualifying. Randy de Puniet and Jorge Lorenzo completed the FP2 top three.

-----Dani Pedrosa set a fresh marker on the new Silverstone circuit on Saturday morning as he broke the 2’05” barrier in the second practice session, setting a fastest lap of 2’04.944. The Repsol Honda rider improved his time from the first practice by 2.642 as his diligent study of the new layout paid off with the top time.

Randy de Puniet also made notable progress as he lapped at fractionally under three-tenths off Pedrosa with a best time of 2’05.241, giving the LCR Honda man the second best time of the session after his glowing report of the track the previous day.

Yesterday’s fastest rider and Championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Fiat Yamaha) was third on the timesheet as he lapped consistently, with a fastest lap 0.107s down on De Puniet’s. Casey Stoner (Ducati Marlboro), another rider who professed his admiration of the new Silverstone after a first ride on Friday, was fourth at just over half a second off Pedrosa’s pace.

Andrea Dovizioso (Repsol Honda) recovered quickly from an early fall approaching Turn 10 – which forced De Puniet to run off as he avoided crashing into the Italian – to set the fifth best time of the session with his 19th and final lap, whilst Nicky Hayden (Ducati Marlboro) made a personal improvement of over two seconds to place sixth.

Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team), Colin Edwards (Monster Yamaha Tech3), Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini Team) and Aleix Espargaró (Pramac Racing) completed the top ten.

There were also falls in the session for Héctor Barberá (Páginas Amarillas Aspar) – at Turn 4 – and Simoncelli at Turn 3, and both returned to the track shortly after. Ben Spies (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) had a slow speed crash going through Turn 12 which appeared to cause him some discomfort.

Lorenzo Notches His Third Win of 2010 Season

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 23, 2010 11:36 am

-----Jorge Lorenzo converted the tenth premier class pole position of his career into victory at Silverstone on Sunday and immediately commented on the instant feeling he had with his Fiat Yamaha M1 machine, which helped him click into a race rhythm that delivered his win by a margin of 6.743s.

"This was an important day for me and an important win, because I felt so strong and I enjoyed riding my Yamaha so much. I had a different feeling today; I felt that it was going to be a good race,” said Lorenzo, whose Championship lead now stands at 37 points over race runner-up Andrea Dovizioso after a third win of the 2010 campaign.

“I never dreamt of taking three wins from five races but here we are and I am feeling very strong mentally at this moment. I want to thank my team, Yamaha and Bridgestone for this victory.”

There was another unique Lorenzo celebration to mark the occasion, as he and three of his entourage donned Beatles costumes in tribute to the famous British band. “The Beatles celebration was something fun for the fans, I love their music and I thought it was nice to make a homage to them, since we're in England!” he added.

Lorenzo’s substantial lead as he crossed the finish line came after he pulled away from the remainder of the field early on in the race, but he had to work hard in the opening laps to establish his advantage.

“It was quite hard to be fast at the start and the first lap with Dani (Pedrosa) was difficult, but once I got past him I felt very relaxed and comfortable,” said the 23 year-old, who started from pole for the first time this season. “I thought he would follow me for a bit longer but he didn't and then I was on my own, so I just had to focus on myself; I didn't even know who was behind me!”
