With the 1st Free practice session completed, the field looks like this:

Camel Honda's Alex Barros has posted the best time in the first free practice session at Motegi. The Brazilian lapped in 1'48.620, less than 0.1s slower than the circuit record set in last year's race by Makoto Tamada.

John Hopkins was second fastest on the Suzuki GSV-R, beating Ducati Marlboro's Carlos Checa by just 0.008s. Championship leader Valentino Rossi, was fourth fastest on the Yamaha, ahead of Italian compatriot Loris Capirossi.

Colin Edwards was sixth fastest ahead of a Honda quartet led by Marco Melandri. The Italian youngster finished the session in seventh position followed by Max Biaggi, Nicky Hayden and Sete Gibernau.

WOW....what a race for those of you lucky enough to watch it...

Loris Capirossi took his first victory of the season in a dramatic Grand Prix at Motegi this afternoon as Valentino Rossi crashed out and missed his first opportunity to clinch the 2005 MotoGP World Championship.... Capirossi made a cautious start from pole position, chasing early leader Marco Melandri over the opening laps before being joined by Max Biaggi. Rossi, meanwhile, made great progress from eleventh on the grid and caught the leading trio on the fourth lap...

With Biaggi now leading from Capirossi the pair were left alone at the front, Rossi colliding with Melandri sending both riders tumbling into the gravel. Capirossi then stalked his compatriot for the next six laps before making his move and opening up an advantage of 1.4 seconds to take a clear victory, Makoto Tamada crossed the line in a distant third place to complete the podium today....

Carlos Checa took the chequered flag in fourth place although he was 22 seconds down on his victorious team-mate as only eleven riders finished a crash-strewn race. John Hopkins, who started from the front row of the grid but lost positions as the race wore on, picked up his best ever Grand Prix finish in fifth ahead of Colin Edwards, Nicky Hayden, Kenny Roberts, Toni El?as, Ruben Xaus and Franco Battaini. Alex Hofmann crashed and broke his ankle, almost certainly ruling him out for the rest of the season....

With Alex Barros and Sete Gibernau also crashing out, the only rider with a mathematical chance of halting Rossi?s championship charge over the next five races is Biaggi, who must score 14 points more than his compatriot to prevent him winning the title in the next race at Sepang in seven days? time.As for Rossi, a top four finish will be sufficient in Malaysia....

So Rossi did the old "if you can't beat them take them out" yet again. That boy is going to fit right into Schuey's seat.

Although this time his tactics backfired, and he dropped out too  .....But seriously, from what it looked like, he wasnt trying to make a pass, it looks pretty much like they simply took different lines into the corner, and Melandri mangaged to slow down and begin turning before Rossi had finished braking, and one thing led to another, and they tasted the gravel...

There will be a nice white vehicle arriving shortly. The rather large men will have a nice new coat for you to put on, then you can go for a drive with them

Capirossi attributed his victory to Bridgestone tyres ( wwwcrashnet.com)
