Krohn Racing owner-driver Tracy Krohn celebrates after co-driver Nic Jonsson captures the overall pole for the Memorial Day Classic.

-----Nic Jonsson captured his first career Rolex Series pole with a time of 48.786 (110.687 mph), wheeling the No. 75 Ford Lola for Krohn Racing, while Jordan Taylor won his second consecutive (and second career) pole in the GT session. Rounding out the top five overall are: Antonio Garcia, Ricky Taylor, Jon Fogarty and Memo Rojas.

In GT, Jordan Taylor laid down the fastest time of 53:315 (101.284 mph) in the No. 30 Mazda RX-8. Taylor was trailed by Adam Christodolou, James Gue, Sylvain Tremblay and Andy Lally, who was the only non-Mazda driver to break into the top five in the No. 07 Banner Racing Corvette.

SunTrust Racing drivers Max "the Axe" Angelelli[r] and Ricky Taylor[l] celebrate their win at Lime Rock w/team principal Wayne Taylor[c]

-----LAKEVILLE, Conn. - Veteran Max Angelelli helped Ricky Taylor score his first GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series victory in Monday's Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park. The event also saw Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas have their hopes of winning a record fourth consecutive race dashed in the first turn of the first lap.

Rojas and Pruett finished last in the 26-car field and earned minimum points, allowing second-place finisher Ryan Dalziel to close to within seven points (155-148), after Dalziel entered the event 21 points behind.

Pruett and Rojas had scored three consecutive victories after opening the season by finishing second in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. They were also looking to give owner Chip Ganassi a strong finish to a weekend that saw his cars win the Indianapolis 500 and finish second in the Coca-Cola 600.

A large crowd watched the first appearance of the Daytona Prototypes at the demanding 1.5-mile circuit under sunny skies, while the temperature, which soared to a high of 84 degrees Fahrenheit, took its toll on the drivers.

In GT, rookies Adam Christodoulou and John Edwards teamed to score their first victory in the No. 68 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8.

Taylor qualified second in the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Ford Dallara owned by his father - veteran Wayne Taylor. He took the lead from pole winner Nic Jonsson on Lap 21 and held it throughout his opening shift. Angelelli fell to ninth on lap 99 when he made a fuel stop under the green flag, but passed Rolex 24 winner Joao Barbosa on Lap 126 and led the remainder of the race. Taylor and Angelelli completed 174 laps - leading 95 of them - and averaged 94.451 mph.

"The heat really affected me today, and I was struggling at the end," said Angelelli, who scored his 15th victory - all with SunTrust Racing. "It was a physical race, and Ricky did a fantastic job. I'm happy to help him win his first race, and now we're ready to fight for the championship."

Rojas, driving the No. 01 TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates BMW Riley, went to the outside of traditional championship rival Jon Fogarty in the sweeping right-hand first turn at the tight 1.5-mile circuit. Rojas ran out of room and went into the dirt, tearing off the front splitter and damaging the front end. Fogarty, co-driving with Alex Gurney in the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Chevrolet Riley, served a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact. The defending Daytona Prototype champions went on to finish sixth.

Dalziel, who won the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona driving for Action Express Racing, scored his best finish with Starworks Motorsport, joining Mike Forest in the No. 8 Corsa Car Care BMW Riley. The margin of victory was 4.791 seconds. Michael Valiante and Brian Frisselle earned their first podium finish of the season, placing third in the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing/CAP & Associates Ford Riley.

Barbosa finished fourth after leading eight laps in the No. 9 Action Express Racing Porsche Riley started by Terry Borcheller, their first podium finish since their Rolex 24 victory. Several teams had strong runs end in disappointment. Nic Jonsson won his first Rolex Series pole in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Ford Riley co-driven by Tracy Krohn. He led the opening 20 circuits before being caught in GT traffic - a move that allowed Taylor to slip by. The team fell off the lead lap on a green flag pit stop and finished ninth.

Antonio Garcia and Buddy Rice ran up front in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Porsche Coyote. Garcia led 30 laps before turning the car over to Rice, who had contact on a restart that cut a tire, resulting in a green-flag pit stop and an eighth-place finish.

Jordan Taylor - younger brother of the overall winner - won his second consecutive pole in GT qualifying, and led the opening five laps in the No. 30 Racers Edge Motorsports Mazda RX-8. He was involved in a tight battle with Andy Lally in the No. 07 Banner Racing Corvette and Christodoulou in the No. 68 SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 during the early stages of the race, with the lead changing hands five times in the opening 45 laps.

Both Taylor and Lally lost laps due to pitting under the green moments before caution periods. Christodoulou led three times for 34 laps before turning the car over to Edwards, who led the final 87 circuits.

"I think the last 10 minutes of the race were the longest 10 minutes of my life," Edwards said. "I had pressure from behind, so I was just trying to stay ahead and not making any mistakes. This was our very first test day with this new car that the team built over the last month - I think that's all you need to say about SpeedSource and Mazda."

James Gue and Leh Keen finished second, 3.112 seconds back, giving the No. 41 Dempsey Racing/Team Seattle Mazda RX-8 its second podium finish. GT point leaders Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal finished third in the No. 69 SpeedSource/FXDD Mazda RX-8, giving them their fourth consecutive podium finish and extending their lead to five points over teammates Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito, who finished fourth in the No. 70 SpeedSource/Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 (148-143).

It marked the fourth victory in five races for SpeedSource entries, which has placed all three of its cars at the top of the podium this season. "Every one of the SpeedSource cars has won a race this year, and that speaks volumes for the effort we put in at the shop," said team owner Tremblay. "The No. 68 was a brand-new car - today was the first time it's been on the track - and it's a credit to the Mazda ladder program to give us two young drivers with this kind of talent."

The Rolex Series teams have only a few days to prepare for the second-longest event on the schedule, Saturday's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen. Opening practice at Watkins Glen International begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday, with the race taking the green flag at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Short Week for Grand-Am Competitors

Post by mlittle » Fri Jun 04, 2010 5:50 am

The season reaches its' mid-point as the stars of the Grand-Am Rolex Series make their way to Watkins Glen and the second "long" event on the 2010 schedule, the Sahlen's Six Hours at the Glen

After four free weekends, the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series races twice in less than one week. The Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen is the second race of a busy week that takes the series to the midway point. The week opened Monday with the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park. This upcoming weekend, Watkins Glen International hosts the series' second longest race. Practice and qualifying at WGI will take place on Friday in preparation for Saturday's endurance classic.

Max Angelelli hopes to count down to victory at The Glen. He was third at the track in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and finished second last year. Angelelli, however, won twice at WGI in 2005 en route to winning the Daytona Prototype championship with Wayne Taylor. Angelelli and new co-driver Ricky Taylor won Monday's race at Lime Rock. Car owner Wayne Taylor-Ricky's father-will join the driving lineup at The Glen.

Other Items of Interest This Week..............

----With GAINSCO, Johnson Set For First Long Course Event
Reigning four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson will join defending Daytona Prototype champions Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen. Johnson has seven starts in the Rolex Series - all at Daytona International Speedway - finishing second twice with six top-10 finishes. Johnson raced in eight Sprint Cup Series races at The Glen, starting on the pole twice with three top fives, including third in 2007.

The biggest hurdle this weekend - the driver change. "It seems like it'd be a piece of cake, but it's tough when the engine's running and you actually have to do it," Johnson said. "It's a really tough challenge. And I think that the multiple driver changes in the 24 hour race will help, but that's definitely going to be a spot I'm nervous about and am worried about making a mistake."

While Johnson has raced on the 2.45-mile short course at Watkins Glen - scoring three top-five finishes in Sprint Cup competition - this will be his first attempt on the traditional 3.4-mile circuit. He's used iRacing to grow accustomed to the longer course.

"Yea, (Dale Earnhardt) Jr. set it up for me," he said. "So we'll find out after I make a lap or two in practice how accurate it is. It seems like, based on running the part of the track that I'm familiar with, that it's very accurate. So I think it will help. I recognize that there's some really blind corners down in the other section that I've never been on before and I think all the repetition I've made on the computer game should help."

The GAINSCO team has been successful at Watkins Glen in the past. Gurney and Fogarty swept the races at WGI in 2007, and the team's first pole position came at the track in 2006.

----Pruett, Rojas Seek Third Consecutive Sahlen's Six Hours Victory
Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas return to Watkins Glen International seeking their third consecutive victory in the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen - and look to return to championship form after a first-lap incident at Lime Rock Park slashed their commanding lead in the standings.

The duo entered Monday's Memorial Day Classic with a 21-point lead in the Daytona Prototype championship. Moments after the green flag waved, Rojas went off course in Turn 1 while attempting to pass Jon Fogarty, who with co-driver Alex Gurney has been their toughest rival in the championship since 2007. Rojas and Pruett were able to return to the race at reduced speed, driving the minimum time in order to score points while finishing last in the 26-car field.

Ryan Dalziel went on to finish second with Starworks Motorsport, drawing to within seven points of the point lead. Dalziel and Mike Forest gave the new team its best finish. Dalziel won the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona, driving for Action Express Racing.

The Lime Rock incident ended a three-race winning streak after the Ganassi team opened the year by finishing second in the Rolex 24. Pruett has been the ironman on the team's past two victories in the Sahlen's Six Hours, closing out both races.

----SpeedSource Stays On Roll; All Three Cars Have Victories In 2010
When Adam Christodoulou and John Edwards won Monday's Memorial Day Classic, it gave SpeedSource four victories in five 2010 events - with all three of the team's cars winning races.

The two rookie drivers, who have worked their way up the Mazda driver development ladder program, shared a brand-new Mazda RX-8. The car was assembled by the Florida-based team over the past month, with work beginning following the first test at Lime Rock in late April. Both drivers are making their first Rolex Series appearances at Watkins Glen.

SpeedSource opened the year with Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona with Nick Ham and David Haskell. Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal won races at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Barber Motorsports Park.

----Assentato, Segal Increase GT Lead
Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal finished third in Monday's Memorial Day Classic, giving the drivers of the No. 69 Mazda RX-8 its fourth consecutive GT podium finish, and increasing their lead in the championship.

A 16th-place finish in the Rolex 24 was not the best way for Assentato and Segal, the 2008 Sahlen's Six Hours GT winners, to open the 2010 Rolex Series GT championship, but they have since been on a roll. The pair followed up wins at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Barber Motorsports Park with a second-place finish at VIR. The Lime Rock Park podium gives them 148 points, five more (148-143) than Rolex 24 winners and SpeedSource teammates Jonathan Bomarito and Sylvain Tremblay. Andrew Davis and Robin Liddell remain third.

----Teams Call On Third Drivers For Sahlen's Six Hours
Several teams have added a driver to their lineup for the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, the second-longest race on the schedule.

* GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing has four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series titlist Jimmie Johnson set to drive with Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty.
* Nick Ham, part of the winning SpeedSource lineup at the 2010 Rolex 24, will co-drive with Wayne Nonnamaker at Team Sahlen. That is the same car-the former No. 70 Castrol Syntec entry-that Ham drove for SpeedSource in the past.
* Butch Leitzinger, three-time overall winner of the Rolex 24, rejoins Brumos Racing, co-driving with David Donohue and Darren Law.
* Wayne Taylor, two-time Rolex 24 champ, will drive with Lime Rock winners Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor.
* Starworks Motorsport added drivers to both of its cars. Former Champ Car winner Nelson Philippe joins Kasper Andersen and Bill Lester, while James Davison joins Ryan Dalziel and Mike Forest.
* Two-time Daytona Prototype winner JC France is set for his first start with Rolex 24 winners Action Express Racing, joining Terry Borcheller and Joao Barbosa.
* Two-time Jim Trueman Award winner Mark Patterson joins Brian Frisselle and Michael Valiante.
* Car owner and WGI veteran Lou Gigliotti will drive with Kelly Collins and Eric Lux.

Pruett, Rojas Shatter WGI Record for 6 Hours Race...........

Post by mlittle » Sat Jun 05, 2010 11:13 am

Image

-----WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - Bouncing back from his team's worst showing of the 2010 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season, Scott Pruett shattered the Watkins Glen International track record Friday to capture the pole position for Saturday's Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen. Pruett ran a lap of 1:40.562 (121.716 mph) in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley, and will join Jon Fogarty on the front row when the green flag waves at 2 p.m. (SPEED live 2-4 and 6-8:30 p.m.)

Fogarty ran a lap of 1:41.242 (120.898 mph) in the No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet/Riley that he will co-drive with Alex Gurney and four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. Fogarty and Memo Rojas - Pruett's co-driver - were involved in an incident in the first turn of the first lap in Monday's Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park. The Chip Ganassi-owned team finished last in that event, seeing their Daytona Prototype championship point lead shrink from 21 to seven points over Ryan Dalziel.

"We were very disappointed with the race at Lime Rock, and we wanted to shake it off," said Pruett, who joined Rojas in winning the 2008 and 2009 Watkins Glen events. "Starting next to Fogarty is no big deal. We've been racing together for a long time. That's all in our rear-view mirrors. Now we're focused on the race."

Johnson participated in Friday morning's practice session, running five laps in his first experience on WGI's 3.4-mile "long" circuit. Johnson improved on each lap and was running fifth overall in the session after his final lap - 1:45.683 (115.818 mph). He then rushed to a waiting helicopter for a 50-minute ride to Long Pond, Pa., to practice and qualify for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.

The Glen's 3.4-mile course contrasts to the 2.45-mile layout used when NASCAR comes to the track. The reason for the difference: a one-mile, four-turn segment known as "the boot." "It's a whole different challenge," Johnson said of running the Glen's long course. "I feel like I've actually finally experienced this track right for the first time."

Burt Frisselle qualified third in the No. 61 AIM Autosport Ford/Riley, 1:41.317 (120.809 mph), and will be joined on the second row by Buddy Rice, 1:41.678 (120.380 mph) in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Porsche/Coyote. Ozz Negri was fifth in the No. 60 Crown Royal XR Ford/Riley, 1:41.763 (120.279), followed by Max Angelelli - who joined Ricky Taylor in winning Monday's race at Lime Rock -in the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Ford/Dallara, 1:41.771 (120.270 mph).

Craig Stanton won the GT pole, running a track record lap of 1:50.213 (111.058 mph). That was his first Rolex Series GT pole, and first for Magnus Racing and the No. 44 Porsche GT3. "It was pretty spectacular," Stanton said. "My run was a bit ragged, but it was good enough to win the pole. It shows where we are in our progression as a brand-new team."

Jordan Taylor scored his fifth consecutive front-row start with a lap of 1:50.493 (110.776 mph), ending his streak of two consecutive pole positions in the No. 30 Racers Edge Motorsports Mazda RX-8.

Ganassi Racing drivers Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas celebrate their third consecutive Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen victory

-----WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - Five days after a three-race GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series winning streak ended in a first-lap crash, Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas turned in a solid performance and started a new streak Saturday in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW Riley by scoring their third consecutive victory in the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen.

Pruett led the final 30 of 191 laps on the 3.4-mile Watkins Glen International long circuit, beating Max Angelelli to the checkered flag by 1.623 seconds. On Monday, the Chip Ganassi team finished last in the Daytona Prototype field after Rojas went off in Turn 1 at Lime Rock Park.

"I love coming to Watkins Glen and I love racing here," said Pruett, who scored his 27th career victory driving a Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Daytona Prototype - with an event record four of them coming in the six-hour Glen event. Getting my little piece of history here is an honor. It was a little scary today when the rain started coming down early in the race on part of the course - that always adds some extra drama."

Pruett and Rojas won their fourth race of 2010, extending their lead in the Daytona Prototype championship to 18 points (190-172) over Ryan Dalziel, who finished seventh in the No. 8 Corsa Car Care BMW Riley. It was Angelelli's fifth consecutive top-three finish in the event, co-driving the No. 10 SunTrust Ford Dallara with Ricky Taylor. The two won Monday's race at the Connecticut circuit.

The Ganassi team's biggest rival throughout the race was the No. 99 GAINSCO Chevrolet Riley of Jon Fogarty, Alex Gurney and four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson. The two teams combined to lead 179 laps. Gurney was running third when he spun in Turn 7 with 15 minutes remaining, resulting in a sixth-place finish.

"This was probably the best the GAINSCO Auto Insurance car ever has been at Watkins Glen," said Fogarty, who drove the opening three hours, seven minutes of the race before turning the car over to Johnson. The reigning NASCAR champion ran second behind Rojas for his entire hour behind the wheel.

Antonio Garcia and Buddy Rice finished third in the No. 90 Porsche/Coyote, giving the Spirit of Daytona Racing its first Daytona Prototype podium finish. The race was slowed by four caution periods, with the most serious incident occurring in the final hour. The No. 6 CAP & Associates Ford Riley of Michael Valiante caught fire on the course, and Valiante, who co-drove with Brian Frisselle and Mark Patterson, nursed the car to the entrance of pit lane. He managed to escape from the car before it was engulfed in flames.

In GT, Andy Lally, Spencer Pumpelly and Bob Doyle came from last in the 29-car field to win. It was Lally's second triumph of the season, joining Ted Ballou when TRG won in its most recent Rolex Series appearance in April at Virginia International Raceway. Lally and Pumpelly also won the GT portion of the race in 2007.

Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito finished second in the No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8. The No. 41 Global Diving & Salvage Mazda RX-8 of Leh Keen and James Gue led a class-leading 49 laps in an effort to give Dempsey Racing its first victory, but the car dropped back to sixth after a pit miscommunications. Keen - last year's Sahlen's Six Hour GT winner with another team - drove a spirited final hour to finish third, pressuring Bomarito at the checkered flag.

MSR to Race Dallaras' at Mid-Ohio

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 09, 2010 9:04 am

-----COLUMBUS, Ohio - Michael Shank Racing will enter a Ford/Dallara in the upcoming EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Round 7 of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal 16 season following a race-ending fire with the No. 6 Ford/Riley in the Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen. Michael Shank Racing driver Michael Valiante emerged without injury from the fire.

The team will continue to benefit from Ford power with the Dallara entry at Mid-Ohio, which will be campaigned alongside the sister No. 60 Crown Royal XR Ford-Riley of John Pew and Ozz Negri. Michael Shank Racing drivers Brian Frisselle and Michael Valiante both have Rolex Sports Car Series race-winning experience driving Ford-powered Dallara machinery.

"I want to thank Bill (Riley) for everything that he and (Riley Technologies) Mike Croake have done to support us--not just with this setback, but also going all the way back to our first race with Riley equipment in 2005," said team owner Mike Shank. "With the damage that the No. 6 Riley suffered and the short turn-around time that we have between these two races, we were forced to look for the best alternative to be ready to compete as a two-car team again at Mid-Ohio. This has been a tremendous set back for the team, but we are determined to fight back and be strong at our home race. The support that I've had from everyone in the GRAND-AM paddock has been astounding."

Ganassi Dominant Through First Half of Season

Post by mlittle » Fri Jun 11, 2010 2:47 pm

With four wins in six races this year, Ganassi Racing's Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas are currently the team to beat in Daytona Prototype competition.......

----- Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas are taking a cautious approach to the second half of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season despite dominating the opening half of the campaign.

"As soon as you start thinking about a championship that is the time you lose it," said Pruett, who joined Memo Rojas in winning four of the opening six races in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley. "We need to stay focused at every race."

Pruett and Rojas enter the second half of the season with an 18-point lead over Ryan Dalziel (190-172), looking for their second Daytona Prototype title in three years. The season enters its second half with the EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank on Saturday, June 19 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (SPEED, live, 5 p.m. ET).

The TELMEX Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates drivers finished second in the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona and then won at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Barber Motorsports Park and Virginia International Raceway. They recovered from a last-place finish following a first-lap incident in the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park by winning the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen.

"It's too early to take anything for granted," Rojas said. "Lime Rock taught us that it's too early for us to talk about winning the championship. We entered that race with a very strong lead, and nearly lost it on the first lap. We cannot take anything for granted. We have to do the best we can and keep pushing to the end."

Dalziel opened the season as part of the winning Action Express Racing lineup in the Rolex 24, and then joined Mike Forest in the No. 8 Corsa Car Care BMW/Riley, finishing second at Lime Rock Park. Max Angelelli and Ricky Taylor are third with 166 points, scoring podium finishes in the last three races in the No. 10 SunTrust Ford/Dallara.

In the production-based GT class, Jeff Segal and Emil Assentato recovered from a 15-place finish in the Rolex 24 by recording back-to-back victories at Homestead and Barber in the No. 69 FXDD Mazda RX-8. They hold a one-point lead in the GT title chase (176-175) over SpeedSource teammates Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito, who won the Rolex 24 in the No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8.

"Fortunately, we're running for the championship, and I don't view it as a burden at all," Segal said. "In years past, we've been frustrated not being in the hunt by the time the second half of the season rolled around. It's uncharted territory for the No. 69 team, but SpeedSource has done it before and I have done it in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge in 2007. So we'll see how it works out at the end of the year." Andy Lally, winner at Virginia and Watkins Glen in the No. 66 TRG Porsche GT3, is third in the championship with 165 points.

Following Mid-Ohio, the series returns to Daytona International Speedway on July 3 for the Brumos Porsche 250. The season continues at New Jersey Motorsports Park on July 18, followed by the Crown Royal 200 at Watkins Glen International on Aug. 7 and the Montreal 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Aug. 28. The season concludes at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City, Utah on Sept. 11. All of the races are televised live on SPEED and broadcast on MRN, with SPEED.com streaming qualifying for most of the events.

Rocky Scores Rare Endurance Double

Post by mlittle » Wed Jun 16, 2010 4:11 pm

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Mike Rockenfeller joined Hurley Haywood, Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Jan Lammers as the only drivers to win both the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning Sunday's running of the French classic. He was joined by former Daytona Prototype regulars Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard in an Audi R15.

Rockenfeller joined Joao Barbosa, Terry Borcheller and Ryan Dalziel in winning January's Rolex 24 At Daytona in Action Express Racing's debut, sharing a Porsche-powered Riley.

GRAND-AM Rolex Series GT regular Leh Keen was the only American to finish on the podium. Making his Le Mans debut, Keen finished second in GT2, driving a Ferrari for Hankook Team Farnbacher. Keen finished second overall in last month's 24-hour race at Nurburgring.

Keen and James Gue will pilot the No. 41 Team Seattle/Global Diving Solutions Mazda RX-8 in Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (5 p.m. ET, SPEED live).

Rojas Wins Mid-Ohio Pole at Last Second

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 20, 2010 2:04 am

Setting a new DP track record in qualifying, Memo Rojas put the #01 Telmex car on point for Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic

-----Already running at the limit, Memo Rojas was told he needed to go a little faster in Friday's qualifying for the EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. He responded with a track record lap in the final minute of the 15-minute session to take the pole from Ricky Taylor.

While Taylor will start Round 7 of the 2010 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 season from the second starting position, his younger brother Jordan Taylor captured his third pole of the season for the production-based GT class. The race will take the green flag at 5 p.m. ET (SPEED, live).

Rojas toured the 2.258-mile, 13-turn circuit in 1:17.523 (104.856 mph), driving the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley. Rojas and co-driver Scott Pruett are seeking their fifth victory of 2010, and hold an 18-point lead (190-172) in the Daytona Prototype standings over Ryan Dalziel. David Donohue was the former track record holder, with a 2008 lap of 1:17.883 (104.372 mph). "When you think you are already on the limit, pulling out an extra tenth is really tough," said Rojas, who joined Pruett in winning last year's event at Mid-Ohio.

Ricky Taylor dominated the 15-minute Daytona Prototype session, breaking the record three times in the No. 10 SunTrust Ford/Dallara before he was bumped to second in the closing moments. His best lap was 1:17.530 (104.847 mph). "I heard them saying on my last lap, 'He's got you by seven-thousandths,' and I pushed a little too hard and made a little mistake," Taylor said of his last lap.

Burt Frisselle qualified third in the No. 61 Pacific Mobile/BioSign Ford/Riley, running a lap of 1:17.911 (104.334 mph). He will be joined on the second row by Jon Fogarty, 1:17.994 (104.223 mph) in the No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Chevrolet/Riley.

Brian Frisselle was fifth-fastest, running 1:18.019 (104.190 mph) in the No. 6 Pit Stop On Norris Lake Ford/Dallara. It was the team's first race in the new Dallara, which replaced the team's Riley that was destroyed in a fire at Watkins Glen. Buddy Rice qualified sixth in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Porsche/Coyote, 1:18.878 (103.055 mph), with the 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner coming off the team's best finish, third.

Jordan Taylor won the pole in GT, running a record lap of 1:24.140 (96.610 mph) in the No. 30 3Dimensional.com/IDEMITSU Mazda RX-8, his third pole of the season. Unlike his older brother, Jordan Taylor's best lap stood up throughout the GT session. "I knew Joey Hand was going to be very fast, and the other Mazdas are always quick, so I just tried to lay down a good lap early in the session and let everyone fight for it," Jordan Taylor said. "I was lucky to get a good lap early in the session, and I was able to stick with it."

Hand qualified second in the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW M6, 1:24.253 (96.481 mph), driving a car that was rebuilt from a practice incident that forced the team to miss the race at Watkins Glen. Adam Christodoulou took third in qualifying with a late lap of 1:24.387 (96.328 mph) in the No. 68 MazdaSpeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8. He will be joined on the second row by Scott Russell, No. 07 Mobil 1 Corvette, 1:24.461 (96.243 mph).

Pruett, Rojas Win Again...........

Post by mlittle » Tue Jun 22, 2010 3:15 am

Their fifth win of the year at Mid-Ohio give the Ganassi duo of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas a one-race advantage over their nearest rivals...........

------LEXINGTON, Ohio - Racing in sizzling heat before a record GRAND-AM crowd at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, it was fitting the hottest team in the Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 came home the winners. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas combined to win Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank, giving them five victories in seven races to extend their Daytona Prototype point lead.

Rojas started from the pole in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley and led twice for 26 laps in the early going, while Pruett paced the final 38 of 107 circuits in the two-hour, 45-minute race. The Chip Ganassi Racing duo also increased their lead in the Daytona Prototype championship to 32 points with five races remaining.

Differing pit strategies saw Pruett back in seventh early in his shift. "Because of the different and interesting strategies everybody was running, we fell back and I had to work my way through traffic," Pruett said. "I worked everything on the car really hard. I took some crazy lines doing some off-the-cuff things, and it worked. It got us to the front. But with about 10 laps to go I was hanging on by a thread. The heat today was brutal, but we knew that coming into this race. The heat inside the car was incredible."

Ozz Negri and John Pew were second in the No. 60 Crown Royal XR Ford/Riley, 2.991 seconds behind, holding off third-place finishers Mark Wilkins and Burt Frisselle in the No. 61 AIM Autosport Ford/Riley at the finish. "It was hot, but we live with it," Negri said. "We live in Miami and John and I train every day in muggy weather."

Wilkins worked his way to the podium during the closing laps, catching Michael Valiante with two laps remaining to spoil a Cinderella story for Michael Shank Racing. Valiante and Brian Frisselle finished fourth in the No. 6 Pit Stop at Norris Lake Ford/Dallara in the first race in that car after the Columbus-based team's Riley was destroyed in a fire at Watkins Glen, N.Y. Wilkins and Burt Frisselle leapfrogged from fourth to second in the championship (225-193), while Ryan Dalziel fell to third with 190 points after finishing 13th in the No. 8 Corsa Car Care BMW/Riley.

Starworks had both of its cars take turns in the lead. Mike Forest led eight circuits in the No. 8 entry, while Nelson Philippe paced 18 laps midway through the race in the No. 7 FlexBox BMW/Riley started by Bill Lester. Buddy Rice led three laps in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Porsche/Coyote, while Valiante paced 14 circuits in the No. 6 Ford/Dallara. Rice finished fifth co-driving with Antonio Garcia, one race after they gave the team its first podium finish in the Daytona Prototype ranks at Watkins Glen.

Joey Hand and Bill Auberlen combined to give the BMW M6 its first victory in the production-based GT class, driving the No. 94 entry for Turner Motorsport after missing the Watkins Glen event due to a practice crash. It marked the first time in Rolex Series history that BMW won both classes in the same event and first time a BMW won in GT since 2005.

Hand followed Pruett to get past John Edwards to take the GT lead, and then paced the final 17 circuits. Edwards finished second - .908 seconds behind - in the No. 68 MazdaSpeed Motorsports Development Mazda RX-8. GT polesitter Jordan Taylor and Jade Buford took third in the No. 30 Racers Edge Motorsports Mazda RX-8.

Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal placed fourth in the No. 69 FXDD Mazda RX-8 to extend their lead in the GT championship to 10 points over SpeedSource teammate Sylvain Tremblay (204-194). Tremblay and co-driver Jonathan Bomarito entered the event one point out of the lead, but the No. 70 Castrol Syntec Mazda RX-8 finished 12th when the Corvette of Eric Lux spun into the path of Tremblay 30 minutes into the event after contact with Auberlen.

Both Paul Edwards and Scott Russell took turns in the lead driving the No. 07 Mobil 1/Airjax.com Corvette, although a green-flag stop for fuel late in the race resulted in a seventh-place finish after the pair led for 32 laps. The race was slowed six times with 24 laps under caution, primarily for cars stranded in gravel traps. Pruett and Rojas averaged 87.433 mph.

Mid-Ohio event director Mary Wier was pleased with the spectator turnout. "The crowd for our opening race was everything we could ask for and more," Wier said. "The grandstands and viewing mounds were packed throughout the day and pit lane was full during both grid walks. It was even tough to see the grass in the infield with the amount of vehicles that showed up for our car corrals. The competition on the track and fan activities throughout the facility really helped bring fans through the gates."[/i]
