Peugeot leads at halfway................

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:30 pm

"Could history be made at la Sarthe?".........this thought had to be going through the Peugeot pits at halfway as Jacques Villeneuve led at the 12-hr. mark for two reasons: 1--if Peugeot wins, it would be the first time this decade that the mighty German juggernaut(a/k/a Audi) was beaten in the twice-around-the-clock classic, and 2--Graham Hill would no longer be the only person to have the "Triple Crown of Motorsport"(winning the Indy 500, the F1 World Championship and the 24 Hrs. of LeMans) all to himself. Meanwhile, the Audi teams, led by "Mr. LeMans", Tom Kristensen, continued to keep up the pace w/the French lions..............

Audi retakes the lead at LeMans............

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 15, 2008 8:42 pm

While the French Lions seem to reign in the dry, once the rains arrived at la Sarthe, the Audi R10s' seemed to come out of nowhere as "Mr. LeMans" himself, 7-time overall winner Tom Kristensen, got one of the luckiest breaks imaginable........as he was pulling into pitlane and his team's pitspace, the leading Peugeot was making a driver change. Working rapidly, the Audi crew got Kristensen out in front of the Peugeot and into the lead........

Audi defeats Peugeot at LeMans..........................

Post by mlittle » Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:10 am

In one of the best 24 Hours of LeMans in recent memory, Audi Sport North America took home the overall/LMP-1 victory, overcoming the obstacle of the mighty "French Lions" of Peugeot Sport as "Mr. LeMans" himself, Tom Kristensen, brought the #2 Audi R10 TDI turbo-diesel home for his record-extending 8th overall win; joining the Dane on the top step of the podium were fellow Audi works drivers Dindo Capello and Scotsman Allan McNish. In an Ironman role worthy of legend, Kristensen drove the last three+ hours in a multitude of dry/wet conditions at the Circuit de la Sarthe, doing everything possible to not only keep it on the island but keep the French Lions behind him, which is what he did............here's what the Great Dane had to say following the race:
Wow! What a race! This (team) was the extension of Dindo (Capello), Allan (McNish) and myself from last year. We just grew into the race getting better and more confident all race long. We forgot all that talking about how we can't win together or we can't win with the 'yellow' car. Thanks to Audi! They trust in us; they prepared a race carwhich we could race and really push hard for all 24 hours to win against great opposition from Peugeot. We did a perfect race thanks to our race engineer Howden (Haynes) and from the people in the background including Ralf Juttner* and Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich.** They all made the right calls on tires (and everything); Allan finally deserved to win at LeMans with Audi. Dindo is a fantastic gentleman and very fast (racer). I hope we can do many more LeMans races together.

**--director, Audi Motorsport(oversees sportscar and DTM competition for Audi)

In the LMP-2 class, Jos "the Boss" Verstappen notched his first LeMans win, joining fellow Dutchmen Jeroen Bleekemolen and Peter van Merksteijen as Porsche notched its' first 24 LeMans win in the LMP-2 category.

Moving over to the Grand Touring classes...............for the second year in a row, the Mother Country(Aston Martin Racing) defeated the Colonies(Corvette Racing) as David Brabham, Darren Turner and Antonio Garcia brought their Gulf-liveried DBR9 to Victory Lane in GT-1; finally, over in GT-2, Risi Competizione put Ferrari in Victory Lane with an outstanding driver from veteran sportscar pilots Jaime Melo, Mika Salo and Gianmaria Bruni.

Class winners from this year's 24 Hours of LeMans...............................
~~LMP-1: #2 Audi Sport North America Audi R10 TDI(Tom Kristensen, Rinaldo Capello, Allan McNish)
~~LMP-2: #34 Van Merksteijen Motorsport Porsche RS Spyder(Jos Verstappen, Jeroen Bleekemolen, Peter van Merksteijen)
~~GT-1: #009 Aston Martin Racing Aston Martin DBR9(David Brabham, Darren Turner, Antonio Garcia)
