News and Notes from the World Center of Racing, pt. 1.......

Post by mlittle » Thu Nov 15, 2007 9:22 am

Yes, I know its' hard to believe but it was just a couple of weeks back that the 2007 Grand-Am Rolex season came to an end in the deserts of Miller Motorsports Park, but the 2008 season has, in a sense, begun with the first of two official Grand-Am tests here at Daytona International Speedway's infield road course, and as your humble NA motorsports scribe, I thought I'd head down to Daytona Beach to see what's the what in Grand-Am..........

~~Welcome back, Pirelli! After several years of running with Hoosier tires, Grand-Am begins a 3-year deal with Italian tire maker Pirelli and, by all accounts, most teams in the series are looking forward to working with Pirelli and their P-Zero racing tires; several drivers, including "Supersub" Memo Gidley, Christian Fittipaldi and Doran Racing principle Kevin Doran had nothing but praise for the P-Zero tires.......

~~From TRD to Ford Racing..........one of the big shockers of the short Grand-Am off-season was the decision by Ohio-based Michael Shank Racing to drop the Lexus engines built by Toyota Racing Development and procure the services of Roush-Yates built Ford Racing engines. Why is it a shock? MSR has been Toyota's biggest supporter for years(more than a certain Chipster, I might add! )so for them to switch powerplants was a shocker to everyone.......

~~Will the 2008 DP's be ready? Depends on which ones you're asking about; reports are that the 2008-spec Lola DP and Doran DP's will be ready(....barely......) and that some of the teams running 2008-spec Riley and Fabcar DP's may run updated 2007-spec DP's for the Rolex 24. Why? Simple; every carbon-fiber chassis builder, by all accounts, are swamped with 2008 orders.....

~~New driver lineups.............two teams today made driver announcements for the 2008 season; Alex Job Racing w/driver Bill Auberlen and Fortune Media Racing(formerly SigalSport) w/drivers Gene Sigal and Matt Plumb

News and Notes from the World Center of Racing, pt. 2.......

Post by mlittle » Fri Nov 16, 2007 10:51 am

Well, the sun has set on the 2-dat November Tire Test here at the World Center of Racing(a/k/a Daytona International Speedway) and the ole' laptop is chock-a'-block full of notes, photos and news from the second day of the test..............

~~More driver announcements................a couple of teams made announcements concerning their driver lineups for 2008:
1--as has been the case in 2006-2007, former ChampCar series legend Jimmy Vasser will join 2007 Daytona Prototype champions Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney for the Rolex 24
2--Grand-Am veteran Michael Valiente has signed on w/Wayne Taylor Racing for the Rolex 24, joining team principle/driver Wayne Taylor, along with drivers Max "the Axe" Angelelli and Ricky Taylor

~~Almost the entire circumference of the earth.....in total, drivers today and yesterday clocked 24,614 miles, less than 700 or so miles short of one full equatorial trip around the Earth...

January Test News and Notes, Day 1.........

Post by mlittle » Sat Jan 05, 2008 10:36 am

The 2008 international motorsports calendar has officially kicked off with the first of three days of testing at the "World Center of Racing", Daytona International Speedway in the runup to the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona and your humble NA motorsports moderator has made the trip down; here are some of the news/notes from Day 1............

~~Montoya leads the way......one prediction made back in November during the November test sessions was that the 2007 pole time of 1:43.475 sec, set by the Gainsco boys(a/k/a Jon Fogarty and Alex Gurney) last year, would fall.......and IT FELL! 15 of the 22 Daytona Prototypes present broke that time, the best time set by Ganassi Racing's Juan Pablo Montoya at 1:41.232 sec. Right on Juan Pablo's heels was another Daytona 'ringer', IndyCar Series driver Ryan Briscoe, who set a flyer of a lap at 1:41.277 in the #9 Toshiba Pontiac/Riley.
~~Over in the GT world...............the fastest time set was by one of the The Racer's Group Porsche entries driven by Andy Lally at 1:51.386 sec; 10 Grand Touring entries bettered the 2007 pole time of 1:51.800

~~New chassis bodyworks seen for the first time.........several teams introduced new chassis in the Daytona Prototype class today; both Krohn Racing and Cheever Racing led the fray, introducing the new Lola DP and the Coyote DP(formerly Fabcar).....in addition, several teams running the Riley chassis introduced the Riley Mk.12 DP, including both SunTrust entries(although SunTrust principle Wayne Taylor reminded everyone that they are running the 2007-spec Mk.11 for the Rolex 24 and then will switch to the Mk.12 for Homestead in late March

~~Additional drivers added to the 24 lineup...........
#6 Michael Shank Racing Ford/Riley--Burt Frisselle
#09 Spirit of Daytona Porsche/Fabcar--Michael McDowell
#61 AIM Autosport Ford/Riley--Colin Braun, Andrew Ranger
