Early look at this year's 24 Hrs. of LeMans......

Post by mlittle » Wed May 23, 2007 11:50 am

With five rounds of the 2007 ALMS season in the books, teams and drivers of the American LeMans Series have begun preparing for their annual assault on the Circuit de la Sarthe and the prestigious 24 Hours of LeMans. Since 1999 when the ALMS was founded, series teams have won 6 overall wins and 20 class titles(an overall pct. of 75% and a class pct. over 60%..........   )

Here are some things to watch.............
~~Audi vs. Peugeot. With rare exception, the past 8 24 Hours. of LeMans have been an Audi lovefest........but not if Peugeot has its' way. In response to the challenge thrown by Peugeot, Audi Sport North America announced Monday that they were fielding a three-car juggernaut for LeMans as follows
--Frank Biela, Marco Werner, Emanuele Pirro
--Allan McNish, Rinaldo 'Dindo' Capello, Tom Kristensen*
--Lucas Luhr, Alexandre Premat, Mike Rockenfeller
*--Kristensen was injured in a DTM accident recently; in the event he is unable to race at LeMans, Audi Sport NA has tapped Matthias Ekstrom as a possible substitute driver

In opposition to Audi, Peugeot's driver lineup stands as follows.........
--Sebastien Bourdais, Stephan Sarrazin, Nicolas Minassian
--Jacques Villeneuve, Pedro Lamy, Marc Gene

Could it be a "Clash of the Titans" in LMP-1...........? :argue: :argue: :duel: :duel: :duel:

~~Can Corvette Racing continue its' dominance in GT-1? Along with Audi Sport NA, another ALMS team that has been dominant at LeMans is that of Corvette Racing and its' Chevrolet Corvette C-6R; this year shouldn't be an exception....although I suspect Aston Martin, Saleen and Lamborghini could argue with that.

~~Can Panoz repeat in GT2? When Team LNT captured the GT-2 class victory at LeMans, it marked the first win for the Braselton, Ga.-based Panoz Motorsport Group and its' Panoz Esperante GTLM sportscar; this year, it is expected that Team LNT will field two entries for the 24 Hrs.; entries are also expected from other LMP-2 teams, such as Risi Competizione, Flying Lizard Motorsports and Petersen/White Lightning.

One item of interest with a few days remaining before the 2007 24 Hours of LeMans..........Audi Sport officials confirmed to the media that 7-time LeMans winner Tom Kristensen will be driving for them this year; Kristensen was injured in a DTM crash earlier in the year.

Peugeot captures provisional LeMans pole.................

Post by mlittle » Fri Jun 15, 2007 10:23 am

(from Wednesday, 13 June 2007).............................

News and notes from the 2007 24 Hours of LeMans...................
--Peugeot 1, Audi 0............with showers sprinkling parts of the 8+ mile La Sarthe circuit, it was a fast flyer set(in dry conditions.....) by Peugeot runner Stephane Sarrazin that was the quickest of the day, setting provisional pole at a 3:26.344 sec time; the fastest Audi runner was that of Frank Biela, who put his R10 TDI right behind the Peugeots'...........

--Welcome Back, Tom! Around the paddock at LeMans, there were cheers and smiles aplenty as "the Great Dane", 7-time LeMans winner Tom Kristensen, climbed into the Audi R10 TDI he and co-drivers Allan McNish(a/k/a "the Great Scot") and Rinaldo "Dindo" Capello, will pilot this weekend at LeMans; Kristensen was injured during the first round of this year's DTM series, suffering a mid-grade concussion among other things........there were concerns that he would not be allowed by ACO medical staffs to compete but Monday he was given the green light and will compete in this year's Le Mans..........    :drive: :drive:

--Slip-slidin' away..........thanks to the ever-present showers around the track, several teams went off-circuit, including the #67 Ferrari 550 from Convers Menx(GT-1) and the #82 Panoz Esperante GTLM from Team LNT......the scariest crash of the session involved the #53 Lambourghini Murcielago from the Isao Noritake team, which went very hard into the tirewalls at the Playstation Chicane(the first of two chicanes along the very long Mulsanne straight; thankfully, no one was injured, but I suspect they'll be working long into the night on repairs.........

Hour 1 at LeMans............

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 17, 2007 9:49 am

(from around 9:30 am U.S. EDT)..............

--Audi 1-2-3...............At the drop of the green, it only took around 30 minutes for the three Audi R10's from Audi Sport NA and Team Joest to grab the early lead in LMP-1........

--Mad pit scrambles..........One of the challenges of racing on a 8+ mile road-course like the la Sarthe circuit is that of rain; it can be clear, sunny skies around at say, Arnage.......while at the Dunlop bridge and Tertre Rouge, it can be rainy and cloudy......which is precisely what sent every team on the track running into pitlane for intermediates and wet tires; what effect will the weather potentially have?

--Good showings from the ALMS community...........at the one hour mark, there were several ALMS competitors doing quite well; in the LMP-2 class, Fernandez Racing co-owner Adrian Fernandez, driving in a one-off for Barazi Epsilon Racing, is third; over in the GT-1 class, Corvette Racing is running 1-2, while in GT-2, works Porsche driver Patrick Long, running for IMSA Performance Matmut, sits in second

(from 10:30 am U.S. EDT)...............

~~What a difference an hour can make!

--2 top runners out............two of the major front-runners find themselves watching; the #64 Compuware Corvette-C-6R is out after coming to a stop right before Indianapolis corner.....while the first major accident of the race happened to one of the three Audi R10's, #3 Team Joest entry driven by Mike Rockenfeller, who spun it through Tertre Rouge, with a major shunt into the armco exiting Tertre Rouge.....

Class leaders...........
LMP-1, #2 Audi R10 TDI(Capello, Kristensen, Pirro), 28 laps
LMP-2, #40 Quifel-ASM Lola B05-40/AER(Hughes, de Castro, Greaves), -2 laps(8th overall)

Hour 4 at LeMans............

Post by mlittle » Sun Jun 17, 2007 10:23 am

(from around 12:30-12:45 pm U.S. EDT)

--the Great Dane's leading........Tom Kristensen currently leads in the LMP-1 class as he and co-drivers Emanuele Pirro and Rinaldo Capello have held sway vs. the newcomers from Peugeot

--Driveshaft failure.........word from race control is that a driveshaft failure ended the day for the #64 entry from Corvette Racing

--On the other hand..........while Corvette Racing appears to be struggling just a bit, Aston Martin Racing appears to be doing well, with both the #007 and #009 leading in GT-1

--What else is new? Already having a dominant year in ALMS, Risi Competizione is....wait for it, leading in GT-2 by one lap over the Panoz Esperante GTLM of Team LNT

--How about that? While they're not competing in this year's running of the 24 Hours of LeMans, reports are that officials and drivers from Penske Racing, Andretti-Green Racing and Highcroft Racing are at la Sarthe watching and taking copious notes for an expected challenge in 2008(both AGR and Penske are eligible for 2008's 24 Hours; AGR due to its' LMP-2 win at Sebring and Penske due to winning the ALMS LMP-2 class title in 2006)

(from around 4:45 pm U.S. EDT)..................

--Still 1-2..............Both Audi R10 TDI's continue to run 1-2, but Peugeot's still running 3-4 in LMP-1

--"Don't wreck the car"..........there was a bit of humor in the Corvette Racing paddock when a reporter for Motors TV asked Johnny O'Connell if there were any hard and fast rules laid down by GM Racing program director Doug Fehan...........O'Connell's reply.........."Just don't wreck the car.....just don't wreck the car!"

Some LeMans winners' fast facts................

~~Something in common.........on the surface, Graham Hill and A.J. Foyt, Jr. look nothing alike, yet they are the only drivers to ever win both the Indy 500 and the 24 Hours of LeMans.........
----Graham Hill(Indy 500 win.........1966; 24 Hrs. win.........1972)
----A.J. Foyt, Jr.(Indy 500 wins.......1961, 1964, 1967, 1977; 24 Hrs. win, 1967)

Big update from LeMans...............

--The race leader's out! Watching the Speed Channel feed(which comes from the world TV feed), Audi Sport's Dindo Capello has a look of utter desolation and "I cannot believe this happened" on his face.....the left rear on the Audi R10 TDI apparently came off, sending Capello into the tirewalls at Indianapolis corner; there's also looks of astonishment throughout the Peugeot paddock, especially on the faces of the engineers and team prinicpals, who I'm betting have told their drivers, including the two in their cars at the moment, Nicolas Minassian(2nd overall) and Sebastien Bourdais(3rd overall) to push, push, push, since the numbers are now in Peugeot's stead(2 vs. 1)

P.S. I'm also betting that Audi is telling Biela, Werner and Pirro the exact opposite of what Peugeot is telling their drivers; i.e. "DON'T TAKE ANY UNNECCESSARY RISKS!!!"

Top-3 in each class................
LMP-1.......................

Update on Capello's off...............

Race control reporting that during their next-to-last pitstop, the left-rear tire wasn't properly fitted onto the car; although the tire mechanic got the tire on, damage was done to the wheel hub and wheel threadings, which eventually sent the tire(and Capello's car) into the tirewalls at Indianapolis.....

Considering that Audi Sport is one of the best endurance teams in the world, this falls under the :wtf: category..................

In LMP-1, the race is now wide-open; Audi P1 in class, Peugeots' P2-P3
