Like father......like son at Daytona.....

Post by mlittle » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:54 am

45 years ago, legendary racer Dan Gurney won the first sportscar race ever held at the "World Center of Racing", and earlier today, his son, Alex Gurney, added his name to the legend by qualifying on point in the Daytona Prototype class, meaning that when the green flag falls tomorrow afternoon for the 45th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, a Guney will start P1 overall......here are the top-5 from the Daytona Prototype category........

DP-1} #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley(Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty, Jimmy Vasser, Bob Stallings), 1:43.475 sec
DP-2} #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley(Max Angelelli, Wayne Taylor, Jeff Gordon, Jan Magnussen), 1:43.480 sec
DP-3} #91 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley(Marc Goosens, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Jim Matthews), 1:43.516 sec

DP-5} #11 CITGO/SAMAX Pontiac/Riley(Patrick Carpentier, Milka Duno, Darren Manning, Ryan Dalziel), 1:43.959 sec

Meanwhile, over in the Grand Touring class, Synergy Racing will start P1 in that class, courtesy of Patrick Huisman, who posted the pole-winning time late in the second qual. session; here are the top-5 from the Grand Touring category........
GT-1} #81 EMC Mech. Svcs. Porsche 911 GT3(Patrick Huisman, Steve Johnson, Richard Lietz, Richard Westbrook), 1:51.800 sec

Rolex 24 Update #1..........

Post by mlittle » Sun Jan 28, 2007 9:48 am

With the time now approaching 6:30 PM US EST, I'm sitting just astride the kink btwn. the West Horseshoe and the Intl. Horseshoe, typing up the first of several updates this weekend for the 45th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona........

~~problems for the polesitters early.....while Alex Gurney in the #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley started the twice-around-the-clock classic P1, he didn't remain there long; as he was entering the bus stop chicane along the Daytona Superstretch, an errant hood that flew off a Porsche GT car hit the #99, cutting both left-side tires.....it got worse; driveline problems put the car in the paddock for a bit
~~hard times for last year's DP runner-ups...after several hours of good racing under their belts, the #60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley of Michael Shank Racing currently finds itself behind the paddock after suffering gearbox problems
~~several cars setting the pace......after last year's dismal performance, one car steadily creeping up the leaderboard is the #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley; another car to watch is the #91 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley, while the #6 Luggage Express BMW/Riley from SigalSport Racing has done well

Current top-5 from both the Daytona Prototype and Grand Touring classes.........
DP-1} #01 Telmex/Target Lexus/Riley(Salvador Duran).............171 laps
DP-2} #58 Red Bull/Brumos Porsche/Riley(Buddy Rice)..............-1 lap
DP-3} #11 CITGO/SAMAX Pontiac/Riley(Ryan Dalziel)................-1 lap
DP-4} #02 Target/Telmex Lexus/Riley(Memo Rojas)..................-2 laps
DP-5} #77 Kodak/Feeds the Need Ford/Doran(M. Jourdain, Jr.)...-2 laps

GT-4} #81 EMC Mech. Svcs. Porsche 911 GT3(R. Lietz)..............-2 laps
GT-5} #17 Doncaster Racing Porsche 911 GT3(J. Mowlem).........-3 laps
*--GT class leader is 13 laps behind the DP class leader
