(NOTE)-Formula5000 ran here in 1975, Formula 1 from 1976-1983 and CART/CCWS from 1984-present

The season begins in the sunny climes of Southern California near where the Queen Mary cruise liner is berthed; this race is considered a crown jewel of the series, as is Surfers Paradise and Toronto. Hopefully, all the dust will have been shaken off by the teams before Friday practice; the track, tight is some areas, wide in others, is an unforgiving beast that can bite drivers is interesting ways. Reconfigured several times in its' history, the current layout has two long straights(Shoreline Dr.-front; Seaside Way-back), a tight, technical section and at the end of the course, a very tight-turning radius hairpin that leads onto Shoreline.

Rd. 2-Lone Star Grand Prix of Houston
1.7-mile temporary street circuit
2006-inaugural event

Round 2 marks the series's return to the state of Texas; the series last visited Houston in 2001, where a downtown circuit was used. This time, they'll be racing under the lights on a temp. circuit centered around Reliant Arena/Stadium near the old Astrodome.

Rd. 3-Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey(Fundidora Park)
2.104-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole.race winners....
2001-Kenny Brack/Cristiano da Matta
2002-Adrian Fernandez/Cristiano da Matta
2003-Sebastien Bourdais/Paul Tracy
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Sebastien Bourdais/Bruno Junquiera

Located in the city of Monterrey, Mexico, this track can confound even the best of teams. It's a mix of long straights, chicanes, technical sections, and two other items......lots of dust, and lots of near suffocating heat. The last three years the series has visited, the raceday temps. have been btwn. 85-90 degrees(F) with just enough humidity to feel like you're in a sauna, albeit a kinda dry sauna. This race marks 1 of the 2 races in the series' Corona Cup, which is awarded to the driver who has the best combined finish from both Monterrey and the season finale down in Mexico City.

As the season approaches, I'll add to this thread, giving readers a snapshot look at the the tracks that make up the Champ Car World Series. Have, fun, and enjoy!! 8) 8)

Following Monterrey, the series heads for the land of beer'n'brats, a/k/a Wisconsin, for the one sole oval race on the Champ Car schedule. The track harkens back to before the modern era, when the speed demons ruled the track. It is a modern bullring, and the drivers who do well here must have nerves of cast-iron to survive and win.

Rd. 5-Grand Prix of Portland
1.964-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners......
1984-Mario Andretti/Al Unser, Jr.
1985-Danny Sullivan/Mario Andretti

2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Justin Wilson/Cristiano da Matta

After Beertown USA, the series travels west to the City of Roses, Portland, and Portland Intl. Raceway. After the frontstretch, drivers face not only the narrowest track in the series, but one of the more formidable corners to start--the Festival Curves, a quick right-left-right chicane that can ruin your day in a heartbeat. The backstraight isn't anything to laugh about, either.....drivers will hit around 170-175 mph right before a quick set of turns going back to the start-finish line.

Rd. 6-U.S. Bank Grand Prix of Cleveland
2.106-mile temporary airport circuit(Burke Lakefront Airport)
Previous pole/race winners......
1982-Kevin Cogan/Bobby Rahal
1983-Mario Andretti/Al Unser, Sr.
1984-Mario Andretti/Danny Sullivan
1985-Bobby Rahal/Al Unser, Jr.

2002-Cristiano da Matta/Patrick Carpentier
2003-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2004-Paul Tracy/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Paul Tracy/Paul Tracy

The funnel turn......just saying those words will send a shiver through drivers here; enough carnage has been created by that infernal corner that it still amazes me to see drivers go four-wide down the 90-ft. frontstraight and then try to squeeze into a 35-40 ft corner still 4-wide. Then again.....it is Cleveland, the "Roar by the Shore".

Rds. 7-9

Rounds 7 to 9 of the 2006 Champ Car World Series belong to the month of July, with two of the three Canadian venues on the schedule and a stop in the south end of San Francisco Bay. I.E., Toronto, Edmonton and San Jose.

Rd. 7-Molson Grand Prix of Toronto, Exhibition Place, Toronto
1.755-mile temporary street circuit
Previous pole/race winners......
1986-Emerson Fittipaldi/Bobby Rahal
1987-Bobby Rahal/Emerson Fittipaldi
1988-Danny Sullivan/Al Unser, Jr.
1989-Emerson Fittipaldi/Michael Andretti
1990-Danny Sullivan/Al Unser, Jr.
1991-Michael Andretti/Michael Andretti
1992-Bobby Rahal/Michael Andretti
1993-Emerson Fittipaldi/Paul Tracy
1994-Robby Gordon/Michael Andretti
1995-Michael Andretti/Michael Andretti
1996-Andre Ribiero/Adrian Fernandez
1997-Dario Franchitti/Mark Blundell
1998-Dario Franchitti/Alex Zanardi
1999-Gil de Ferran/Dario Franchitti
2000-Helio Castroneves/Michael Andretti
2001-Gil de Ferran/Michael Andretti
2002-Cristiano da Matta/Cristiano da Matta
2003-Paul Tracy/Paul Tracy
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Sebastien Bourdais/Justin Wilson

If Long Beach is America's crown jewel, and, likewise, Surfers Paradise the same for Australians, then Toronto is Canada's CC crown jewel. Unchanged since the first race in the mid-1980's, this track has what one expects in a street circuit--tight, twisty technicals, a long, fast backstretch and razor's edge racing, from start to finish.

Rd. 8-West Edmonton Mall Grand Prix of Edmonton, Finning International Raceway(Centre City Airport)
1.96-mile temporary street circuit
2005 Pole/Race Winners.....
A.J. Allmendinger/Sebastien Bourdais

Compared to Cleveland, this track is Cleveland on steroids. Lots and lots of steroids. It is the fastest track of the temporaries, and nothing shows it better than the turn 13/14 chicane, a fast 130+ mph right/left combo that the drivers take in fourth/fifth gear, flat out. The good thing about FIR is that the fans can see just about anywhere on the track, from the frontstraight through the technicals and all the way around.

Rd. 9-Taylor Woodrow Grand Prix of San Jose
1.448-mile temporary street circuit
2005 Pole/Race Winners.....
Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais

Okay, so the 2005 race here wasn't that good. But it wasn't the drivers' fault. With the expected improvements to the track layout for 2006, the race should turn out better than 2005. Still, what was it PT said about the race last year......"These ain't World Rally Cars."

The next three rounds of the 2006 Champ Car World Series take the drivers to three very different tracks--the streets of the Mile High City, Denver; the flowing road course at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, and to "America's Spa", Road America.

Rd. 10-Centrix Financial Grand Prix of Denver, Pepsi Center, Denver, Col.
1.657-mile temporary street circuit
Previous pole/race winners.....
1990-Teo Fabi/Al Unser, Jr.
1991-Michael Andretti/Al Unser, Jr.
2002-Bruno Junquiera/Bruno Junquiera
2003-Oriol Servia/Bruno Junquiera
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Paul Tracy/Sebastien Bourdais

Set around the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, this track is a fast-paced but tight and difficult street circuit punctuated by its' signature corner, turn 9(the Mile High Corner), which starts at around 55-60 ft., widens out to over 115 ft. and then sharply narrows along the outside back to 55 ft. for the trip down the frontstraight.

Rd. 11-Molson Indy Montreal, Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal, Quebec
2.709-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners......
2002-Cristiano da Matta/Dario Franchitti
2003-Alex Tagliani/Michel Jourdain, Jr.
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Sebastien Bourdais/Oriol Servia

Once during the year, the ChampCars will use a track their F1 cousins visit, and it's the famous Circuit Gilles Villeneuve set on the Ile de Notre Dame along the St. Lawrence River in Montreal. The track is a fast-flowing, difficult course with three well-known sections, the Senna curves at the end of the frontstraight, the Casino hairpin which leads onto a long(ok, make that very long) backstraight which leads onto its' signature corner, the chicane which connects the two long straights that happens to go by the "Wall of Champions", where many a top driver has met the business end of the concrete wall and ended their day in inglorious fashion.

Rd. 12-Road America 200, Road America/Elkhart Lake, Wisc.
4.046-mile natural terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners........
1982-Rick Mears/Hector Rebaque
1983-Mario Andretti/Mario Andretti
1984-Mario Andretti/Mario Andretti
1985-Danny Sullivan/Jacques Villeneuve(the elder)
1986-Bobby Rahal/Emerson Fittipaldi
1987-Mario Andretti/Mario Andretti
1988-Danny Sullivan/Emerson Fittipaldi
1989-Danny Sullivan/Danny Sullivan
1990-Danny Sullivan/Michael Andretti
1991-Bobby Rahal/Michael Andretti
1992-Paul Tracy/Emerson Fittipaldi
1993-Paul Tracy/Paul Tracy
1994-Al Unser, Jr./Jacques Villeneuve
1995-Jacques Villeneuve/Jacques Villeneuve
1996-Alex Zanardi/Michael Andretti
1997-Michael Andretti/Alex Zanardi
1998-Michael Andretti/Dario Franchitti
1999-Michael Andretti/Christian Fittipaldi
2000-Dario Franchitti/Paul Tracy
2001-Kenny Brack/Bruno Junquiera
2002-Bruno Junquiera/Cristiano da Matta
2003-Bruno Junquiera/Bruno Junquiera
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Alex Tagliani

The Kink. Canada Corner. The Carousel. Briggs & Stratton Corner. Say these names to an AOWR fan, and the first track that comes to mind is Road America, a/k/a America's Spa. Set in the central Wisconsin countryside, the track does evoke comparisons to its' F1 brethren, with its' flowing turns, narrow-angle apex turns and its' roller-coaster style frontstraight(drivers come out of the final turn and head up a 150-ft hill, passing the start/finish line just as they begin the descent into turn 1). After a one-year absence from the schedule, it is great to see this historic track back on the racing calendar.

The last three rounds of the 2006 Champ Car World Series season will se the teams and drivers make two trans-Pacific stops, in Ansan, S. Korea, then to the Australian Gold Coast and the always-challenging concrete canyon a/k/a Surfers Paradise, and then make the return trip back across the pond to the Autordromo Hermanos Rodriguez to end the 2006 season.

Rd. 13--Grand Prix of Ansan, Ansan, South Korea
Distance unkown at present; natural-terrain road course
Inaugural visit for series......

Rd. 14--Lexmark Indy 300, Surfers Paradise, Queensland, Australia
2.795-mile temporary street circuit
Previous pole/race winners list located on pg. 3 of Open-Wheel(Non-IRL) News thread w/in the Champ Car forum.....

Since 1991, the Champ Car World Series has made the trans-Pacific trip to the temp. circuit an hour's drive south of Brisbane, and each year, a different driver has left with the victory. When you consider those who have won, from Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi, Paul Tracy, Cristiano da Matta and Sebastien Bourdais, that's an impressive statistic. It's one of the series' three crown jewels, following Toronto and Long Beach; a win here will solidify any drivers' creds in the future.

Rd. 15--Grand Prix of Mexico, Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Mexico City, Mexico
2.786-mile natural-terrain road course
Previous pole/race winners......
2002-Bruno Junquiera/Kenny Brack
2003-Paul Tracy/Paul Tracy
2004-Sebastien Bourdais/Sebastien Bourdais
2005-Justin Wilson/Justin Wilson

After 14 rounds of non-stop, full-throttle racing, the series concludes the 2006 campaign with its' second stop in Mexico, this time to the high-altitude environs of Mexico City and the Hermanos Rodriguez track, a track which resembles a cross btwn. several others--Suzuka in Japan, Fundidora Park, in Monterrey and the temp. course in Edmonton--in other words, a fast and difficult track to tame.
