Testing Resumes at Sebring--26 Jan.

Post by mlittle » Fri Jan 27, 2006 7:38 pm

2 teams took to the track Thursday, as both PKV Racing and Newman-Haas Racing saw drivers test on the Sebring short course. A combination of good weather and excellent track conditions contributed to all three drivers setting times in the 51.0-51,3 sec, range(series officials didn't release any official times..... ). However, rumors are that all three drivers, Franck Montagny and Katherine Legge for PKV, and Bruno Junquiera for NHR, set times in the above range(Montagny was said to be the fastest, at a hair under 51 sec.).

Tomorrow's testing schedule is expected to have two teams involved, Forsythe Championship Racing and PKV Racing. As for drivers.....Forsythe hasn't released their list, while Legge will run more full-race testing runs for PKV Racing(continuing what was done on Thursday).

SeaBass back in the saddle for 2006

Post by mlittle » Sat Feb 18, 2006 2:42 pm

For 2-time Champ Car World Series champion Sebastien Bourdais, it was another day at the office as he and the #1 McDonald's FC/L team from Newman-Haas Racing conducted a one-day acclimation test at Firebird Raceway today, shaking off the cob-webs of the off-season. The team did over 250 miles of testing at the Arizona track and Bourdais set a fast lap midway through the session of 46.52 secs. Bourdais afterwards, said, "It felt good to get back behind the wheel. I have quite a few sore spots on my body and they are a little painful but it's a good pain. It was more like a wakeup call but we were surprised by how many interesting things we discovered to pursue with the racecar." Bourdais, who will attempt to equal Ted Horn's record of three consecutive championships, set in 1946-1948, has another milestone later this month, as his 27th birthday is on Feb. 28th. The team will resume testing at Sebring along with NHR teammate Bruno Junquiera at Sebring Intl. Raceway followed by a series open test at the California Speedway road course in late March.

Forsythe concludes Sebring tests

Post by mlittle » Sat Feb 25, 2006 1:09 pm

For Forsythe Championship Racing, the 2006 season officially began with a recent testing session this week at Sebring Intl. Raceway's "short course" as both of their drivers, Paul Tracy and Mario Dominguez, turned around 40-45 laps; by turning less than 50 laps, they were both able to avoid having to count this test agst. the series-allowed no. of testing days. However, with track conditions less than optimal, w/cloudy skies and humidity, team officials decided to cut the session short. FCR will resume testing early next month, then join most of the CCWS teams at California Speedway's road course in late March for a series open test prior to the season opener in Long Beach.

Forsythe has sucessful 2-day test in Texas

Post by mlittle » Sat Mar 11, 2006 10:50 am

For Forsythe Championship Racing, it was just another day at the office, as drivers Paul Tracy and Mario Dominguez put their Ford-Cos./Lola ChampCars through a two-day test at Houston Mtrspts. Ranch, earlier this week. Both drivers went through various testing regimens, checking out tire, aero, and suspension setups both days. Here are a few quotes from the pair......

Paul Tracy, #3 Indeck/Forsythe FC/L:
I'm very happy with how things went. This is our first time at the track, and, let me tell you, it's one of the most fun tracks I've ever driven. It's got a nice combination of slow, medium and high speed corners, with one of the quickest road course corners anywhere. I was coming in there in seventh gear and not even lifting at the turn in; (it's) just a great place to test everything from shocks to aero.
Mario Dominguez, #7 Indeck/Forsythe FC/L:
What an amazing facility this is. This is a really big market for us and I'm looking forward to racing in front of all the Hispanic fans.
Next week, the track will see Rocketsports Racing test there, with former F1 pilots Antonio Pizzonia and Enrique Bernoldi testing for at least one day(or two). As for Forsythe, they'll next test at California Speedway March 28-29 when the series has its' Open Test on the speedway's road course.

Bernoldi, Pizzonia complete Rocketsports testing

Post by mlittle » Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:37 am

For former F1 pilots Enrique Bernoldi and Antonio Pizzonia, it was an interesting 2-day test at Houston Mtrspts. Ranch as the pair tested with Rocketsports Racing. Both put up competitve times, 1:11.7 secs. for Pizzonia and 1:12.1 secs. for Bernoldi(by comparison, last week, FCR's Paul Tracy put up times in the 1:11.3-1:11.6 secs. range). Here are some quotes from those involved......

Antonio Pizzonia(formerly w/Williams F1):
It was a productive test and I adapted well to the car and the turbo engine. We had engine problems at the end of the day and we couldn't use the second set of new tires, but still I think the team was excited about my performance.
Enrique Bernoldi(former BAR-Honda tester; also drove for Arrows in 2001-2002):
The second day was better, the car improved with every change we made. I felt satisfied after 60 laps on Wednesday. The biggest difference in comparison to the F1 car is the heavier steering, but I felt that I can be extremely competitive here working with the right engineer.
The team is still undecided on their driver lineup for 2006; however, with the expectation that fmr. Rocketsports driver Alex Tagliani will re-sign with Team Australia, both Bernoldi and Pizzonia are considered front-runners for the two Rocketsports seats.

Teams take to Sebring track for testing

Post by mlittle » Thu Mar 23, 2006 3:08 pm

Three teams, Newman-Haas, PKV Racing, and CTE-HVM Racing, took to the track Wednesday on the Sebring "short course" for a full day's testing. Times were unavailable, according to the teams, but reports are that the five drivers involved(Bourdais, Junquiera, Legge, Servia and Phillipe) all posted times in the low-to-mid 50 sec. range(likely due to the very high grip left from the recent 12 hrs. of Sebring race!).

All three teams will return to Sebring for one additional day of testing before they join the other teams in the CCWS for the 2-day open test on the road course at California Speedway later on in March.

Teams conclude Sebring testing

Post by mlittle » Fri Mar 24, 2006 11:31 am

Although testing at Sebring ended early due to rain showers passing through central Florida, several Champ Car teams made sure to use all the time available as Newman-Haas, PKV and CTE-HVM tested today. Setting the fast lap of the session was NHR's Bruno Junquiera w/a time of 49.93 sec. Three drivers did full race sims today, Junquiera and Bourdais for NHR and Katherine Legge for PKV. Her teammate Oriol Servia conducted a 50-mile test(in order to preserve testing for later in the year) as did both Nelson Phillipe and Dan Clarke, who tested for CTE-HVM. While Phillipe already has one seat w/CTE-HVM, Clarke is a front-runner for the other seat.

Fontana Open Test---Busy day for teams and drivers

Post by mlittle » Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:20 am

With the season less than 2 weeks away, several Champ Car World Series teams traveled to the California Speedway road course to begin what is expected to be a 2-day open test. Teams involved include Forsythe Championship Racing, Newman-Haas Racing, PKV Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, and one car from MiJack-Conquest Racing, Team Australia and CTE-HVM Racing. Here's a brief synopsis on everything seen and heard today........

1}Dale Coyne's strongest driver lineup........while, as expected, DCR signed journeyman driver Nicky Pastorelli, the team also signed a long-time series veteran, 2002 Vanderbilt Cup winner(series champion) Cristiano da Matta. He'll drive the #19 Ford-Cosworth/Lola w/sponsorship from several companies, including American Medical Response(AMR), Sonny's Real Pit BBQ, Northern Illinois Steel and Aurora Bearings. How enthused was team owner Dale Coyne during the press conference when da Matta was introduced as one of his drivers'....."Our team has smelled victory in the past; it's now time for us to taste it." For the team I've often referred as ChampCar's version of the former Minardi F1 team, they've come close; a couple of years, then-driver Alex Barron was leading late at both Surfers Paradise and Fontana when his car's engine BBQ'ed. In 2004, Oriol Servia, now w/PKV Racing, finished on the podium at Laguna Seca in third, so they've come close. Maybe they'll win this year.......

2}Pizzonia to drive for Rocketsports. At the team's lansing, Michigan HQs, team owner(and series co-owner) Paul Gentilozzi announced that former F1 pilot Antonio Pizzonia will drive for the team starting in Long Beach at the season opener. While the team will miss the 2-day open test in Fontana, Pizzonia will test w/the team in Houston on April 1st.

3}Team Oz establishes a big feeder ladder........team officials announced their driver lineup for the Formula BMW series today.....meaning that they will have teams in three different series(2 drivers in Champ Car, 2 in CC Atlantic and 2 in Fm. BMW!) While its' unclear what the short-term results will be, this is great news in the long-term, especially in a merged CC/IRL series....

Results from the first testing session.........
1}Bruno Junquiera(#2, Newman-Haas)..................53.495 sec./100.508 mph
2}Sebastien Bourdais(#1, Newman-Haas)..............53.647 sec./100.322 mph
3}Justin Wilson(#9, RuSport)................................53.662 sec./100.294 mph
4}Paul Tracy(#3, Forsythe Ch.).............................53.740 sec./100.149 mph

6}A.J. Allmendinger(#10X, RuSport)......................54.769 sec./98.267 mph
7}Andrew Ranger(#27, MiJack-Conquest)..............55.192 sec./97.514 mph
8}Oriol Servia(#6, PKV)........................................55.312 sec./97.303 mph
9}Mario Dominguez(#7, Forsythe Ch.)....................55.327 sec./97.276 mph
10}Nicky Pastorelli(R-#11, Dale Coyne)..................55.694 sec./96.635 mph
11}Charles Zwolsman(R-#34, Team Australia).........56.008 sec./96.093 mph[1]
12}Katherine Legge(R-#20, PKV)............................56.192 sec./95.779 mph
13}Cristiano da Matta(#19, Dale Coyne)..................no time
14}Jimmy Vasser(#12, PKV)...................................no time

[1]-although Zwolsman signed with CTE-HVM, they were unable to make the 2-day test; Zwolsman is instead testing w/Team Australia during the 2-day test

Teams preparing for Portlant test

Post by mlittle » Wed Apr 12, 2006 2:06 pm

For teams of the Champ Car World Series, it'll be a quick turnaround as the series prepares for a 2-day test session in the City of Roses, Portland, at Portland Intl. Raceway, April 12-13. All the drivers from this past weekend's race at Long Beach are expected to test, along with at least one addition, as MiJack-Conquest Racing announced late today that former Toyota F1 test driver/IRL IndyCar Series driver Ryan Briscoe will also be joining them. Briscoe, who tested in late 2005 for PKV Racing, will share testing duties with rookie Charles Zwolsman on both test days.
