2007 CCWS Rd. 6--Grand Prix of Quebec

Post by mlittle » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:27 am

note.........neither the ChampCar website nor the event website(champcarmonttremblant.ca) have an official name for the event.....   ; hence, the generic GP name..........

It's been a long while, but the stars of the Champ Car World Series return to one of the more interesting venues in all of North America, Circuit Mt. Tremblant in St. Jovite, QC. Back in 1967 and 1968, the then-USAC National Championship Series visited the facility(all four races there were won by Mario Andretti) and it seemingly fell off the map........but it is back on the racing calendar and by all accounts it should be an interesting racetrack and the racing should be very competitive...........here is the event schedule; note the changes to the schedule...........

Practice Session #1....................11-11:45 am, 29 June 2007
Qualifying Session #1.................2:15-3:15 pm, 29 June 2007*
Practice Session #2....................10:15-11:30 am, 30 June 2007
Qualifying Session #2.................2-3 pm, 30 June 2007*
Warm-Up...................................10-10:30 am, 1 July 2007
Race..........................................2 pm, 1 July 2007 live on ESPN
*--qualifying is 30-35 minutes; included are 2 15-minute practice sessions

Friday Notebook..........

Post by mlittle » Sat Jun 30, 2007 1:42 pm

Some news and notes from Mt. Tremblant................

~~Serious effort..........serious effort. One of the many interested spectators in the ChampCar paddock Friday was Russ Herriott, head of SEI Racing Enterprises, who was asked by several members of the press as to how real the new AVN Racing effort was for 2008.....Herriot's reply:
It is a serious effort to put a car on the track for 2008, and we may even run a race or two this year as a test for us and for Champ Car. We are currently putting all of our deals together and expect (that) they will do (due diligence in regards) with existing and future sponsors to make sure it isn't going to cause them any problems. Everything will be done tastefully and within whatever guidelines Champ Car establishes.
If there is a bright spot for AVN Racing, it is one two fronts, 1--rumor has it that it will be a full-up team with two paid drivers and a budget upwards of $8-$9 million, and 2--that the guidelines ChampCar puts in place for AVN(a/k/a Adult Video News) will ensure that existing and future sponsors will not be offended by their arrival; chances are, if they allow AVN in, that the guidelines used by Grand-Am in regards to Playboy will be the ones used.

~~21 pounds of penalty........Considering Robert Doornbos' 5th-place provisional starting spot, it is interesting to note that he put that fast time up despite being 21 lbs. heavier on fuel than provisional pole-sitter Tristan Gommendy....why the fuel penalty? According to Doornbos' engineer Michael Cannon,
We've got a fuel pickup problem. We've got to load up Robert with an extra three gallons of fuel, which is an extra 21 pounds of fuel he doesn't need; it definitely doesn't help.
~~Gommendy's secret weapon.......Following the QS-1 session, in which the Frenchman beat current series champion Sebastien Bourdais by 7/1000th's of a second, he was quick to credit his "secret weapon", team co-owner/1996 CART champion Jimmy Vasser, who timed his outlaps just so that when Gommendy got through his outlaps, he had clear track in front of him for his flyers.....hey, it worked, didn't it?

Bobby D. wins in Mt. Tremblant.......

Post by mlittle » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:35 am

ChampCar rookie Robert Doornbos(affectionately referred to by NA motorsports fans as "Bobby D".......   ) has been knocking on victory's door all year long; today at the scenic Mt. Tremblant circuit, he broke through giving Minardi Team USA its' first win since 2004(when Ryan Hunter-Reay won at the Milwaukee Mile for then-Herdez Competition) in ChampCar's return to the Laurentians'. The race itself was interesting from start to finish............

Prior to the start, electrical problems prevented polesitter Tristan Gommendy from taking the formation lap; the team fixed the problem, but Gommendy was forced to start from pitlane. When the lights went out for the standing start, both Team Australia cars of Will Power and Simon Pagenaud along with Conquest's Jan Heylen stall, bringing out the first caution of the day; all three cars got tow starts and got back to speed soon afterwards. At the same time, NHL's Sebastien Bourdais jumped the start(how he incurred no penalty is beyond me........  ) but then the proverbial gremlins began to come out of the woodwork........

First, the rain..........one of the biggest worries any driver/team can have is seeing rain in one part of the track and dry conditions elsewhere, which is what occurred all race long; having begun on slicks, teams had to make stops throughout the race to put on wets, and by the end everyone on track was on wets'. Of course, it was easier running behind the leader than being the leader, because whenever anyone ran at the front, they would either make a mistake on-track, handing the lead to whoever's behind or, in Graham Rahal's case, stalling while on pitroad. In addition, last week's winner, Paul Tracy, saw his race end early when the Cosworth XFE-3 turbo decided to BBQ itself(the second consecutive race in which the venerable Cossie BBQ'ed itself........   )

In the end, the only driver who didn't screw up all race long was Doornbos, who cruised to a near-3 second win over SeaBass(who got booed afterwards by spectators for b------- on-air about Doornbos supposedly blocking.......hey, SeaBass, WHAT BLOCKING?  )......here are the top-10 from an interesting return to Mt. Tremblant:

1st}(R)#14 Robert Doornbos.................................62 laps
2nd} #1 Sebastien Bourdais..................................-2.888 sec
3rd} #5 Will Power...............................................-7.310 sec
4th}(R)#15 Simon Pagenaud................................-10.562 sec
5th} #9 Justin Wilson...........................................-11.288 sec
6th}(R)#21 Neel Jani...........................................-12.346 sec
7th}(R)#2 Graham Rahal.....................................-12.790 sec
8th} #8 Alex Tagliani...........................................-13.422 sec
9th} #7 Oriol Servia............................................-26.742 sec
10th}(R)#28 Ryan Dalziel....................................-32.949 sec
