V8 testing for 2006

I've noticed some teams such as Toyota doing a hell of a lot of testing with their V8s and are already getting them to last 80laps.
Have teams like Renault and McClaren been developing them too? - Obviously they're very busy developing their current cars for the championships, but at the rate that Toyota are testing their V8s it looks like they are going to have an advantage going into the start of 2006..
That would be interesting to see Toyota fighting for championships.. something they weren't far off from this year.
I think there's a substantial wad of cash to be gained from some stragetically placed spread bets on toyota at the end of this season :-) And now im 18 I can finally get better odds on betfair! woohoo :lol:

So far i have only heard about the toyota testing, (maybe the other teams are doing it behind closed doors.

Speaking of testing....you should read this...it doesnt happen very often....

Gene has done some V8 testing for ferrari.. also i THINK williams have done something? At least 3 teams have been testing the V8s but i guess with Toyotas massive budget (and a decent test driver in Panis) they can afford to test them more than others.

I think you are right, at least 3 teams are testing. Beforre you go throwing your cash on toyota ( 18 yo.. wahoo :cheers: :up: ) think about this.Williams is going to be using a cosworth motor. Cosworth V10s are not slow. Cosworth have race winning v8s out there NOW, their imput into chassis design is going to be enormous. Williams have two top of the art synchronised wind tunnels up and running, and have just appointed a couple of hot shot areonauticcal guys. Anyone who thinks that Williams, read Sir Frank, (and I would back him in a game of cards against every other team, except Stoddy) had to run around desperately looking for an engine supplier might readjust their thinking if they read BMWs head honchos press statements earlier this week
He acknowledged that Williams would be ahead of them this year, they(BMW) are working to a 5 year plan.... but the thing that caught my attention was the words used by him to describe the parting....one could be excused for thinking that Sir F told him, ... thanks but no thanks

yea, thats for reminding me about that, had forgotten... i expect williams to be strong next year too.. given cosworths v8 history... Could be a bit of a shuffle in the grid, althou it is already a bit of a mess with a new team being third best every race, lol :-) BAR are coming pretty strong with Button at the wheel, with him alongside barrichello, we could have an even tighter situation in the championships than this year, perhaps 4/5 teams will be in with a shot at halfway through the season.

I would tend to agree that cosworth v8s will be tough next year. This is a video of the cosworht engine going 20k revs!

The teams are applying different approaches to the issue of V8 testing. A number of teams have already started testing the V8 engine in their cars while others continue testing them on the dyno only. Some teams are opting to test on the dyno so as to mazimise track testing for this year's developments. As both Renault and McLaren are competing for the title don't expect them to use much track testing for the V8 until the title is decided.
Other teams however have tested V8 engines on the track including Ferrari, Toyota and BAR. Williams did test a BMW V8 as well however given that BMW are leaving them there won't be any more of that.

The FIA Friday press conference saw several teams discuss this issue. Have a read here

Tgarcia, I've seen that video of the Cosworth V8 going at 20K revs. I'll say this about Cosworth...if they're V8 engine that Williams will use next year is as good(in terms of power, reliabilty, etc) as the V8 engines they've currently got in use over here in NA motorsports, then Williams should be able to find the top of the constructors' championship next year.

Unfortunately i dont know a lot about engines,, but because cosworth will have to develop a new V8 for williams, wont that mean they will be in pretty much the same situation as any other team?
OK, fair enuf cosworth have got experience building the engine, but they have only just begun a new relationship with williams, so development is bound to have as many teething problems as any other team...

Also, i hear that Red Bull wont be allowed to test ferraris v8s until december, sounds like they made a bad decision switching engines.. with ferrari dropping down the field they arent going to let red bull be ahead of them with their own engines!

With their current expertise in building v8s now, 1 feel that they are better equiped to overcome such teething problems than any other engine builder. I just hope they have damned good security. 8)

forgive my lack of motorsport knowledge, but are there no other engine manufacturers currently producing V8s ?

To the best of my very little knowledge, there are no other manufacturers currently producing a V8 , and winning, in a high performance single seater chassis who will be involved in F1 next season.

As far as standard production, then I think Renault are the only ones that don't. (don't quote me though).

It's more of an extreme high performance issue. Toyota and Honda are involved with V8s as well as cosworth in NA racing but cosworth produce the most.

All the theories in the world don't matter until the start of next season when we get some results.
Ok, Lewis may win the WDC in 07, but Sato will beat him in 08.

Not quoting you but Renault provide 4 litre V8 engines to the GP 2 series :D

What about Mercedes :wink:
