Well, the 2024 season is almost upon us. Following the 24 hours of testing at this circuit over the past week, it is time for the teams to show what they have.
My opinion after the testing is that Red Bull will still be the team to beat. They haven't done anything overly spectacular but, out of the box, the RB20 has been on the pace. It may not be as dominant as in 2023 but it will be close.
Next best would have to be something like Mercedes and Ferrari. Ferrari on long runs have been competitive and Mercedes are in the ball park. With Carlos Sainz driving for his F1 career and Lewis Hamilton trying to go out with a bang, I am anticipating this pointy end of the field battle to be a highlight of the season. That and the contracted remaining team drivers showing that they deserve their places for 2025.
Possibly next will be the battle between Aston Martin and McLaren. Both are playing down their chances for 2024. My gut tells me that McLaren with particularly Lando Norris will come out on top of this battle. They have a stronger lineup pairing than the Aston Martin duo.
Now comes the hard part. Possibly the RB, read AlphaTauri, are ahead of the game, but only just. Sauber, maybe Williams then possibly Alpine will fill the next positions with Haas holding up the rear.
I do hope that I am wrong, I have been many times before, but I am looking forward to the imminent start of the Grand Prix season.

The season commences Thursday, a full 24 hours ahead of normal, for this and the next event in Saudi Arabia. Don't get caught out!

My thoughts...

For the first time in a few years, we had no cars fail to finish. With minimal incidents throughout the race, we could see just where all the teams are at the start of 2024. I do know that Carlos Sainz received the Driver of the Day award however I want to put Lance Stroll up there. Following being turned around in the first corner of the race, he made a spectacular recovery to finish in the points. Both he and Zhou Guanyu achieved more than was expected in my eyes.
Disappointment would have to go to Yuki Tsunoda having to give up his place to Daniel Ricciardo in the latter stages of the race while he himself was challenging for the pass.

Next weekend we are off to Saudi Arabia for round 2 of the championship. Will the final result be any different? For the win, probably not. For basically all other positions, we will have to wait and see just which team has strengths on a faster, more flowing circuit.
