1st Friday practice results:

Position Driver Team Best Time Gap Total Laps
1 Mark Webber Red Bull 1:37.651 - 22
2 Lewis Hamilton McLaren Mercedes 1:39.316 1.665 16
3 Michael Schumacher Mercedes 1:39.791 2.140 29
4 Nico Hulkenberg (Test Driver) Force India 1:40.377 2.726 23
5 Pastor Maldonado Williams 1:40.443 2.792 31
6 Felipe Massa Ferrari 1:40.453 2.802 22
7 Nick Heidfeld Lotus Renault 1:40.525 2.874 6
8 Rubens Barrichello Williams 1:40.581 2.930 21
9 Fernando Alonso Ferrari 1:40.601 2.950 23
10 Nico Rosberg Mercedes 1:40.646 2.995 29
11 Adrian Sutil Force India 1:40.734 3.083 21
12 Daniel Ricciardo (Test Driver) Toro Rosso 1:40.748 3.097 23
13 Jaime Alguersuari Toro Rosso 1:40.770 3.119 24
14 Kamui Kobayashi Sauber 1:40.872 3.221 27
15 Jenson Button McLaren 1:40.927 3.276 16
16 Jarno Trulli Team Lotus 1:41.620 3.969 21
17 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull 1:41.627 3.976 18
18 Sergio Perez Sauber 1:41.642 3.991 24
19 Timo Glock Virgin 1:42.154 4.503 18
20 Jerome d'Ambrosio Virgin 1:42.540 4.889 20
21 Davide Valsecchi (Test Driver) Team Lotus 1:44.054 6.403 18
22 Vitantonio Liuzzi HRT 1:45.228 7.577 20
23 Narain Karthikeyan HRT 1:46.267 8.616 10
24 Vitaly Petrov Renault 1:47.932 10.281 4

The gap between Webber and the rest is massive! Vettel appeared to have a KERS problem in the session. His final lap would have moved him into second but he pitted instead.
Problems for the Lotus Renault team. Heidfeld had the right front wheel of his car lock under braking and limped back to the pits and didn't return back. Petrov had a similar problem when the front left wheel/suspension snapped under braking sending him into a spin and into the gravel.
A similar problem happened to d'Ambrosio in the Virgin.
Narain Karthikeyan in the HRT had a serious engine problem as he exited his garage!. The team managed to get the car back and fix the problem and got him back out. Both HRT's are slow and at this pace they won't make the starting grid due to the 107% rule.

Webbo's best chance?

Post by cosicave » Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:40 am

Webbo's best chance?

…He needs to win at circuits like this if he is to preserve any realistic chance at the title. If Vettel can out-score him at these types of circuit - which suit Webber's style - he will very easily become the favoured one again (as if he's not already! ;))

It is good to see Webber at the pointy end of practice 1 & 2. Now he has to put it together against the qualifying masters Vettel and Hamilton.

That qualifying lap by Vettel to put himself on pole just shows the quality of the man. He is really in tune with his car and the team at this point of the season.

It was a great lap; no doubt.

As for 'superiority'; my belief is consistent with others in the paddock that Red Bull have the superior car and that McLaren have begun to approach Red Bull largely as a result of their driver line-up.

We have 7 hours to go until they show us what they're made of, but my belief is that McLaren's drivers are making up for the shortcomings of their car, which is likely to result in a very close battle between man and machine. - Red Bull's machine and McLaren's men…

Voted for Heidfeld as best driver. He had a phenomenal start (the Renault takes off like a rocket) and managed to hold off a determined Webber.

Damned shame Kubica couldn't start the season. He could've been winning races.

I gave my DotD to Mark Webber. He had a horrible start to the race and despite all being against him he came back to get a very well deserved 4th place. Yes Seb was brilliant but much easier to stay in front than play catch up.

Webber did great, but for me it is Vettel. He managed to grab the pole and had a masterful drive.
