New points system for 2010

Post by Ed » Sat Dec 12, 2009 4:40 pm

The F1 commission decided to introduce a new points system to Formula 1 from 2010 due to the expanded grid of 13 teams (or 26 cars).

The points system will cover the top 10 and be as follows:

1st - 25
2nd - 20
3rd - 15
4th - 10
5th - 8
6th - 6
7th - 5
8th - 3
9th - 2
10th - 1

A press statement by the FIA read:

The FIA today hosted the first meeting of the F1 Commission in its new structure since the signing of the 2009 Concorde Agreement. Chaired by Commission President Bernie Ecclestone and with FIA President Jean Todt in attendance, the F1 Commission is made up of key championship stakeholders from F1 teams, promoters, suppliers and sponsors.

The F1 Commission agreed that the Brawn team will be allowed to change its chassis name from Brawn to Mercedes. The team will continue to receive payments based on its historical performance. This has been granted on a one-off exceptional basis due to Mercedes-Benz’s long-term involvement and commitment to Formula One.

The F1 Commission also proposed a number of amendments to the sporting and technical regulations, which will be put to the FIA World Motor Sport Council for final approval tomorrow morning. They include:

- Due to the expanded grid of 13 teams, a new points system for the 2010 season:

1st - 25
2nd - 20
3rd - 15
4th - 10
5th - 8
6th - 6
7th - 5
8th - 3
9th - 2
10th - 1

- A strong mandate has been given to the Sporting Working Group, a sub committee of the F1 Commission made up of the FIA and F1 teams, to develop detailed proposals to improve the show. These will take effect from the 2010 championship.

- The FIA and FOM will further collaborate to enhance the communication and promotion of the championship to the media and its worldwide fanbase.

The next meeting of the Formula One Commission will be held on 10 March in Bahrain.

Note: The points system has been tweeked to give the winner a better advantage over coming second. The official 2010 scoring system is now:

Winner: 25 Points
2nd: 18 Points
3rd: 15 Points
4th: 12 Points
5th: 10 Points
6th: 8 Points
7th: 6 Points
8th: 4 Points
9th: 2 Points
10th: 1 Points

New Points System for 2010

Post by Felicious » Sun Dec 13, 2009 4:13 am

I DISAGREE...!

How about:
Rank = Points
01 = 20
02 = 16
03 = 12
04 = 10
05 = 08
06 = 06
07 = 04
08 = 03
09 = 02
10 = 01

25 points for race winner is just too high!

I AGREE...!

25 points is a bit too much...

however, whomever can finish first the most and consistently finish top three throughout the year usually wins anyway. they should keep it closer, similar to motoGP.

maybe...

1st = 25
2nd = 20
3rd = 15
4th = 13
5th = 10
6th = 8
7th = 6
8th = 4
9th = 2
10th = 1

that would make for a closer championship allround i reckon.

F1 2010 Points

Post by Rodrrico » Mon Dec 21, 2009 10:07 am

The 2010 point system will be the biggest mistake of the FIA for 2010. The points are far too high and it will damage the chances of there being a title fight right down to the wire. Should a driver win the first 3 races, then the championship is all but decided with a 15 point lead at most on the nearest commpetitor.

I think having points for the first 10 places is a great idea, but how about this instead:

1 = 15
2 = 12
3 = 10
4 = 8
5 = 6
6 = 5
7 = 4
8 = 3
9 = 2
10 = 1

On top of this, an additional point awarded to the driver who clinches fastest lap, like in the early races of the 1950s.

A gap of 5 points between the top 3 drivers of a race (between each other) is simply too great.

IMO an excellent move, particularly the points up to 10th place.

The gap is not too big between the podium placings IMO, basically they have been multiplied by the same factor of 2.5...

Basically the gap between winning and not could be even greater, considering the old days when it was 10, 6, 4, 3 etc. That meant 2 3rd placings wouldnt match a win whereas today and next year they are worth slightly more(2009: 1st=10P, 2x3rd=12P., 2010: 1st=25P., 2x3rd=30P.).

I would have it ideally 25, 16, 10, 8 etc. because I feel a win should be more than 2 3rds, but as it is made it makes for a longer title fight.....

Cheers, and bring on the season, cant wait!

Must have the pattern!

Post by Felicious » Tue Dec 22, 2009 7:11 pm

I'm still with my suggestion.
The pattern, guys!
I just doubled it.
10 > 20 +04 than it lower rank
08 > 16 +04
06 > 12 +02
05 > 10 +02
04 > 08 +02
03 > 06 +02
02 > 04 +01
01 > 03 +01
00 > 02 +01 [addition]
00 > 01 +01 [addition]

Or if FIA is still firm to use the new point system with 25 etc, they must exchange 7th ranked points from 5 to 4.

I also AGREE in what Rodrrico said. He has the pattern points system! Fastest lap got +1 point and maybe the pole sitter got +1 point too...

I'm perfectionist and want to see F1 as perfect as possible.

The new system is good in that it rewards the top 10 finishers however it still doesn't give the winner a bigger gap over second compared to the gap between second and third. The gap before was 2 points, now it is 5.

The new points system is so similar to the old one, here is the top 10 drivers in the championship in 2009 with the old points and the new points:

DRIVER.....2009 Points System.....2010 Points System
BUTTON.....95.....228
VETTEL.....84.....203
BARRICHELLO.....77.....184
WEBBER.....69.5.....172
HAMILTON.....49.....121
RAIKKONEN.....48.....119
ROSBERG.....34.5.....74
TRULLI.....32.5.....73
ALONSO.....26.....62
GLOCK.....24.....62

Button would still have clinched the title in Brazil.
No significant change in the gap between any of the top 10.
Only change in order would have been Alonso and Glock (due to Glock have a higher best place)

Yeah, that's right.

I'm just not comfortable and feel strange if I were a driver in a new team, got only 1-5 points or even 0 point and the championship leader got a... err... two hundred points. (I will not write the number)

Please, forgive my English if it looks so... hehehe... ^,^

New points system.....................

:shock2: :shock2: :shock2:

*thinks to himself, I have been away for a while.............. :shock: :shock: *

At first glance, that points' system reminds me of the one CART used for years(from 1st-12th: 20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1; pole-1pt/most laps-1pt). Other than the two bonus points, its' similar to some degree. The only thing that worries me as I look at it is the possible increase in points racing as the season goes on. I could be wrong.......... :shock:

I agree with F1greyhound there has to be an bigger incentive for 1st place. But also they were throwing around the idea of extra points for the fastest lap and pole. I think these are great ideas. even if there just 2 points.

:welcome:

First, welcome to the forums, Dano! :)

I tend to also agree w/F1greyhound in that there should be more of an incentive to win but not at the expense of consistency; certainly, haven't there been years(maybe not in F1 but in other racing series around the world.....) where the driver w/the most wins hasn't won the championship for lack of overall consistency? :shock: :shock: :shock:

In other words, any points system(whether in F1, IRL, NASCAR, V8 Supercars, etc.) must work to balance wins w/consistency without going to one extreme or the other.

It is the second change to the points system in as many months, after it was realised that a change to 25 points to a win and 20 for second place did not alter the percentage difference between first and second place.

It is very disconcerting that the thinkers and technical bods behind F1 do not have even a rudimentary grasp of mathematics.

Well said Snowy and now I am reading that they may force 2 stops per race

They are playing with the tyre rule, to enforce artifcial qualifying, and promote overtaking.
