Felipe Massa was hit by a spring that broke loose from Rubens Barrichello's car. Barrichello was a few seconds ahead of Massa but the spring seemed to have bounced on the track and hit Massa's helmet. As a result Massa was knocked out and drove straight into the tyre barriers.

Intial signs were not good when Massa didn't get out of his car and the track marshals signalled that he was unconcious.
Massa was taken to the medical centre then to a hospital in Budapest and reports at that stage were that he was ok and had suffered a hit to the chin.

However reports on the internet told a different story and Ferrari issued a statement that read:

After the accident during the qualifying session of the Grand Prix of Hungary, Felipe Massa was airlifted to the AEK hospital in Budapest. Felipe was conscious at the arrival at the hospital and his general conditions remain stable. Following a complete medical examination it emerged that he had suffered a cut on his forehead, a bone damage of his skull and a brain concussion. These conditions need to be operated on after which he will remain under observation in intensive care.

A few hours later and following the operation, Ferrari issued a second statement that read:

Felipe Massa has undergone surgery this afternoon at the AEK hospital in Budapest and the outcome of the procedure was positive. Now, Felipe will remain under observation in intensive care.

We all wish Felipe Massa a full and speedy recovery

Below is a video replay of Massa's accident (thanks to RE30B#16 for providing the link)

We will continue providing updates on Massa's condition as soon as it becomes available.

The latest statement from Ferrari on Massa's condition:

After undergoing an operation yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa's condition remains stable and there were no further complications through the night. He will be given another CT scan today, which will provide more precise information.

I used to be a skeptic when it came to Felipe Massa, but he has proven to be a force in Formula 1 and deserves to be considered the "number 1" in his team. I wish him a very speedy recovery. F1 needs Massa.

Forza Felipe!!!

More positive news on Massa's condition as it emerges that he has been awaken from his induced coma and has spoken to his family. It has also been revealed that his left eye maybe injured however the extent of the damage is unknown.

Fellow F1 driver and friend Rubens Barrichello is pleased with Felipe's progress and hopes to see him back in the car soon.

I would be surprised to see him back racing this year. Hopefully his left eye is ok and we will see him back next year.
It must be such a relief to his family to know that he is ok.

Great to read that Massa is getting better. It must be a relief for his family especially his pregnant wife, I can't imagine what she has been going through

The FIA Safety commission to report and make recommendations on the recent debris-related accidents in F1 and F2.

FIA statement:

FIA Safety Commission

FIA President Max Mosley has asked the FIA Safety Commission to prepare a report on the recent debris-related accidents in the FIA Formula One World Championship and FIA Formula Two Championship.

The FIA Safety Commission, which is made up of medical and technical representatives from all areas of motor sport, will submit its report and recommendations to the World Motor Sport Council.

Preliminary findings suggest the helmet being used by Felipe Massa may have played a significant role in limiting the injuries sustained. The FIA 8860 helmet, which took eight years to develop by the FIA and FIA Institute, provides increased protection in all key impact areas.
