I agree with you that we are lucky to be able to eat better food than that. However I do believe that if money is tight there are cheaper healthier alternatives than SPAM. The humble potato being one example. With a couple of potatoes one can do so many things, and much cheaper than a can of spam.

I am not trying to be a smartass Wen, some of the guys n girls I deal with cant boil water. One of the things I do, when they come to us is teach them basic life skills. These guys dont know their 5x tables, they haven't a hope of doing a budget.They see a can of spam, corned beef etc, as a healthy alternative to Mackas, and get it with the "5 finger discount".One girl last week was very proud that she stole an apple instead of chocolate.

Maybe we should look at the bright side: At least the only spam they know of contains some protein
