Selected quotes from day 2 at Barcelona

Ian Morgan, Head of Race Engineering - Red Bull
Generally it was good today and we got through almost everything we wanted to. We had a few small problems, such as an issue with a heat shield. But that’s why we do these tests, to iron out any little problems, and generally the simulations went well
The weather is forecast to deteriorate a bit overnight, which may make it difficult to run the simulations, but hopefully we can do the same simulations with Mark that we did with Seb today.
Toro Rosso press statement:
Jaime Alguersuari completed his second and final day of testing here at the Catalunya circuit near Barcelona, during which he did a respectable number of laps on a day that featured fewer red flags than yesterday.
The Catalan driver had a busy programme, all of which was completed by the time the flag fell at 5 o’clock. It included a continuation of yesterday’s brake system evaluation and an assessment of different set-up configurations to suit various conditions and fuel loads. Jaime also tried three of the four Pirelli compounds – Hard, Soft and Supersoft – again working on car set-up to suit each one.
Tomorrow morning, our reserve driver, Daniel Ricciardo will have his second outing in the STR6, following on from his half day in Jerez, before Sebastien Buemi takes over for the afternoon and Monday.

Ferrari press statement:
Second day of testing for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and the eleven other Formula 1 teams, working until Monday at the Montmelo circuit, outside Barcelona.
Fernando Alonso was again at the wheel of the F150th Italia. The Spaniard completed fewer laps than the average managed by the Scuderia so far, because of a couple of problems, one electrical, the other mechanical, which meant the team did not get through all its planned programme for the day. Despite all this, Fernando still managed to do 90 laps, the fastest in a time of 1.23.978, gathering useful data for the continued development of the car and to increase understanding of the Pirelli tyres.
Testing at this track continues tomorrow, with Felipe Massa at the wheel.

Rubens Barrichello - Williams
We had a very productive day completing 118 laps which has helped make up for the time we lost yesterday. Today was the first time I was able to use KERS, running with it activated for about 75% of the day so I am feeling happy. We also did some longer runs and I feel we are getting better prepared with everything ready for the start of the season.
Sam Michael - Technical Director - Williams
It has been another good day of running concentrating on KERS, setup work, long runs and starts, and we’ve had no mechanical issues with the Williams Cosworth driveline. Most of the parts on the car now have done quite a few miles so we're pushing into that zone where you can have high mileage failures. We need to do it now though to avoid failures on race weekends. We're learning more about the Pirelli tyres and how to extract the most out of them - there's definitely going to be some tricks to that this year! Right now the rate of performance development is high for all teams, so it's not possible to put any real indicators on pace order.
Nick Heidfeld - Lotus Renault
The balance of the car was not as good as it was in Jerez, but we did improve things by the end of the day. We lost a bit of time at the start of the afternoon, but when I did get out we did some useful work including new tyre runs, data collection and some work on the car’s systems. But we still need lots more mileage because there are a lot of things on our job list to try, especially for the set-up of the car.
Vitaly Petrov - Lotus Renault
After losing the track time yesterday, it was nice to be back in the car this morning and we completed quite a lot of laps. We found a lot of new things and worked on the general set-up, as well as understanding how the tyres are performing. It’s quite cold here, especially compared to Jerez, so it was difficult to warm up the tyres to begin with, but we’ve learned quite a lot from the short runs we did.
Kamui Kobayashi - Sauber
We had no technical problems at all, and I think this was the first time we were able to complete the whole programme. We worked on the set-up, and we now have a better understanding of the tyres. We collected a lot of data, and I’m happy with what we achieved today.
James Key - Sauber Technical Director
We completed 125 laps, which is good. It was a case of working through some programmes to understand more about the tyres. Barcelona is a good track to get a handle on tyres, but the cold condtions this morning made it a little tricky with high wear on the front tyres, although this was probably not unique to us. We ran through a race set up programme this morning using all three compounds – hard, medium and soft – to get an overview of the longevity of their performance. This also allowed Kamui to work on managing the tyres from a driver’s perspective. In the afternoon we worked on the set-up and used a new package to improve mechanical grip, and this looks okay. We also worked with the different compounds, but this time with set-up changes between them to understand better their one lap performance, although it wasn’t a qualifying simulation. We recovered well after a slightly tricky day yesterday, and Kamui did a very good job.
Nico Rosberg - Mercedes
We completed a great deal of mileage and that was important for me to understand more about the tyre behaviour. There is a lot for the drivers to learn about how the Pirelli tyres are performing, and about how to make them last over the long runs; it's going to be a key factor this year in the races and I think we made good progress on that front today. The reliability was ok but everybody in the team knows we need to keep pushing to make sure we are trouble-free for the start of the season.
Jenson Button - McLaren
We’re not doing as many laps as we’d like, so we’re a little behind some of the other teams, which is a bit of a disadvantage, but that’s something we’re addressing. Over the next two days, hopefully our reliability will be better, and we’ll be fully equipped with spare parts.
Mileage not only helps reliability, but it’s also useful for set-up work. It’s difficult to balance the car with the front wing when you’re trying a variety of tyre compounds and fuel loads. And it’s taken a bit of a time, especially at a circuit like this, where getting the aero balance right is important.
There’s a lot more performance still to come from this car – now we just need some proper mileage to see what it can do. Hopefully, Lewis will be able to achieve that over the next two days.
Paul di Resta - Force India
Today was a definite improvement over yesterday's running with a lot more laps under our belt. We ran through a lot of set-ups with the different tyre compounds and the car felt more balanced, which showed in a generally better lap time. Apart from the problem with the throttle sensor in the afternoon everything went pretty much to plan and we've got a lot of information to feed into Adrian's programme tomorrow and for the rest of the test.
Dominic Harlow, Circuit engineering director - Force India
Paul again concentrated on long run comparison of the tyres with some further aero, brake material and set-up tests today. A sensor problem later in the afternoon resulted in the only real down time of the day. It was a reliability issue, but in testing and we are confident it is understood and can be addressed. Adrian takes over the car tomorrow and will continue with the tyre programme.
Heikki Kovalainen - Team Lotus
I think the positive feeling with this car is growing even though we have had a couple more reliability issues today. They're all teething problems and we are patient while we fix them one by one. We'll get through this and put the reliability issues behind us as we have experienced people in the right positions who know how to deal with them. We still managed to complete a lot of work today and I can't wait to get back in the car.
Ricardo Teixiera - Test Driver - Team Lotus
First I want to thank the whole team for the chance to drive again today. It was really good to be able to get some more laps done and everyone worked really hard to make me feel comfortable in and out of the car. I enjoyed myself out on track and by the third run I was able to start pushing a bit more so I think I did what I was asked to today and have taken another step forward in my development as a driver.
Mike Gascoyne - Chief Technical Officer - Team Lotus
That was a much more encouraging day today with 84 laps in total on the car. We did have a couple of minor issues with the fuel pressure and a water leak but overall it was a better day for reliability. We were able to give Ricardo his first proper run in an F1 car after he had helped us out in Valencia with our filming and he did just the job we wanted him to. He made no mistakes and consistently brought his lap times down on the medium tyre which I think all the teams have said is probably the slowest tyre we have. With Heikki we wanted to do a race distance which was slightly hindered by the water leak but overall we definitely made progress today.
Vitantonio Liuzzi - HRT
Today was a positive day. We made a lot of changes on the car, focusing particularly on the set-up and the tyres. It was a chance for me to get to know the new tyres and the team as it was my first day with Hispania Racing. We couldn’t do a lot of laps since we had a problem with the gearbox in the afternoon, but we were able to clock a good time given the circumstances. We did long runs and short runs to test the performance of the car. Overall, I believe we’ve taken a step forwards with the balance of the car.
Colin Kolles, Team Principal - HRT
It was nice to see Tonio driving for us today, our aim was none other than to have him get used to the car. We tested different settings on the car balance during both sessions and, looking at the times, we clearly improved as the day went on. We are very happy with Tonio’s work today.
Timo Glock - Marussia Virgin
It’s great to be back in the car again. It has been another very useful day for the team today which is important for us to keep understanding and refining the new car. We are also making good progress understanding the new Pirelli tyres and the team is really doing a good job getting ready for the start of the season.
John Booth, Team Principal - Marussia Virgin
Another constructive day for us in Barcelona with yet more good mileage under our belts. With the Bahrain test and race being something of an unknown quantity at this time, we are pushing extremely hard to ensure we maximise the opportunity that this test provides to refine the car and achieve as much data as possible.

Selected quotes from day 3 at Barcelona

Nico Rosberg - Mercedes
It was interesting running with the intermediates this morning and, although the warm-up is tricky, we definitely improved our understanding of the tyres. Our long runs this afternoon included some aero work in preparation for our next upgrade package before going into lower-fuel, new-tyre running at the end of the day. We made good progress in understanding the car and the tyres, and the reliability was solid once again. Overall, I've enjoyed two positive and productive days here in Barcelona.
Vitaly Petrov - Lotus Renault
We used the intermediates to begin with and it was one of our first opportunities to do a lot of laps with them. The only issue we had was warming them up because it was very cold early on. The plan was to do a race distance in the morning and we managed quite a lot of long runs while the track was wet. Then, we put the slicks on just before lunch and started improving the set-up. We learned a lot of new things and I’m starting to understand the tyres more and how to get the most from this car.
Lewis Hamilton - McLaren
This was a positive day: we’ve been focusing on our programme, trying to complete as many laps as possible, improve reliability and understand the Pirelli tyres. We’re learning more and more about them every day.
We’ve had a few technical issues with this car, but the guys have been working incredibly to rectify them. To get more than 90 laps under my belt today was a big positive, and I’m looking forward to a trouble-free day tomorrow.

Pastor Maldonado - Williams
It was a good day for us overall. This morning it was wet and we lost some time as I spun the car trying to judge the track conditions when it was quite slippery. After that we had a problem which lost us more time while the team fixed it. This afternoon was really good though and we put in some consistent times while trying different things in the car. Everything is running well and I am happy as I feel we have improved the car from Jerez.
Sam Michael - Technical Director - Williams
The circuit was wet this morning, which meant the time was spent mainly on Pirelli Intermediate tyres. We had a problem with the alternator late morning that necessitated a change so most of our laps were completed in the afternoon session. We went through many systems checks while Pastor continued putting mileage on the FW33. Furthermore, we evaluated some setup directions to explore some different areas on the car aeromap.

Mark Webber - Red Bull
Today went well, with nearly 140 laps completed, and you can’t complain about that. Obviously, we now have a lot of data to digest and we’re learning a huge amount about this car and how to get the best from it. It was damp all morning and that meant we had a pretty condensed programme this afternoon but we got through it well and, I have to say, the car ran really, really well. A good day and we’ll come back tomorrow to learn some more.
Ian Morgan, Head of Race Engineering - Red Bull
We had a lot of rain overnight and it did upset our plans for Mark today. The conditions in the morning meant we couldn’t do a P3 or qualifying simulation, but it did allow Mark to get some running on the intermediate tyres, which was useful as he hasn’t had that opportunity before.
In the afternoon, with the track dry, we got down to the race simulation and I’m happy to say we got through that with absolutely no problems, which is always encouraging. It was a shame Mark didn’t get to do a qualifying simulation but it was a pretty productive day otherwise, with some time on inters and the full race in the afternoon, so we’re happy enough.
Jarno Trulli - Team Lotus
Despite some mechanical gremlins which cut short my running time today we managed to collect some good data and overall I have a good feeling about the car. It’s good to see that without doing many miles, and it being my first day in the car today on the new tyres in Barcelona, I managed to do some consistently good lap times throughout the end of the afternoon session. This morning we were running on wet and intermediate tyres and evaluating them, and working on some setup changes. All in all it’s been a very positive day and it’s great to see we’re getting closer to the top. It gives me a lot of confidence and gives the whole team encouragement to keep pushing forward. Tomorrow we want to carry out more setup evaluation as today I didn’t run that much and didn’t get the chance to explore the car as I would have liked. We had a number of small problems which eventually we solved but I want to get some more mileage done as there is definitely more potential to come from the car.
Mike Gascoyne - Chief Technical Officer - Team Lotus
A slightly frustrating day as our running was limited by a problem with a cracking water pipe this afternoon. We knew about the problem but did not have spare parts for it so we had to use parts repaired at the circuit. The team did a good job today to make sure Jarno could get more laps done in the dry conditions and he was fairly happy with the car by the end of the day. We also managed to do a reasonable amount of running in the wet so although it was one of those quite tough days we managed to make fairly decent progress and with new parts available tomorrow we will look to complete some more significant mileage.

Sergio Perez - Sauber
Although the track conditions were not so good in the beginning, it was a positive day. We did some long runs, and we were able to collect a lot of information on the tyres. I learnt a lot, and I’m happy how things went today.
James Key - Sauber Technical Director
It was good to have Sergio back in the car. It was a bit of a compromised day with the conditions this morning, which were both wet and cold, and it took quite some time to dry out. However, it allowed us to use both the wet and intermediate tyre again and to evaluate how the set-up needs to be changed from dry to wet with the Pirelli tyres. In the afternoon we ran a race simulation with three stints. Sergio put in some consistent lap times first on the hard, then the medium and finally the hard compound again. Unfortunately we had a problem with the rear wing so we had to bring him in. Apart from this, it was another trouble free day with many laps that allowed us to gather a lot of data. Tomorrow we will concentrate more on further set-up work and some test items we want to use on the final day.
Adrian Sutil - Force India
A lot of laps again today, without any real reliability issues, so my second day of good driving in the car. The rain before the start of running gave us the chance to complete full laps on the wet tyres after only doing install laps on them with Paul on Friday. As the track dried later on we moved over to the intermediate and then to the dries after lunch. We didn't get the opportunity to try the supersoft tyres at the end of the day, which would have given us an improvement in lap time, but overall the balance is getting there and we know there's a lot more to come from the car. The DRS [drag reduction system] is working well and we're going in the right direction with everything we do now.
Dominic Harlow, Circuit engineering director - Force India
Wet conditions quite similar to day one this morning and we collected some useful data on both the wet and intermediate tyres. In the afternoon a dry programme allowed Adrian to compare the tyres and evolve the set-up. He covered a solid mileage and we're expecting slightly better conditions tomorrow to conclude the test in a similar fashion.
Sebastien Buemi - Toro Rosso
Even if I did not do so many laps this afternoon, I think the work we did was productive and it means we have plenty of sets to run with tomorrow, to increase our understanding of the different tyre types. We also evaluated some elements aimed at increasing downforce, which was interesting and now I just hope it is dry all day tomorrow, so we can get plenty of laps completed.
Daniel Ricciardo - Toro Rosso
It was an interesting morning in changing conditions, especially as I was one of the first to switch to slick tyres as the track dried this morning. I was pleased to be able to test a few different compounds so the day was more productive than we expected, especially in terms of learning more about the crossover point from wet to intermediate to dry tyres. Now, I am not due to drive at any further test sessions, so my next time in the car should be during Free Practice 1 at the first Grand Prix.

Ferrari press statement:
Third day of testing for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro and the eleven other Formula 1 teams, working until tomorrow at the Montmelo circuit, outside Barcelona.
Felipe Massa was at the wheel of the F150th Italia. In the morning, work was affected by the track conditions, as the surface was wet almost up to the lunch break. This meant the Brazilian driver was able to run fairly continuously on the Pirelli intermediate tyres. However he did have a couple of off-track excursions, although the car was undamaged. In the afternoon, on a completely dry track, Felipe concentrated on a race simulation, which was successfully completed. He drove a total of 123, with a best time of 1.26.508.
Testing at this track continues tomorrow, again with Felipe Massa at the wheel.

Timo Glock - Marussia Virgin
“It has been a very interesting day today for me and the team. It was useful to drive on a wet track and understand the new intermediate and wet Pirelli tyres. We were also able to continue adding good mileage to the car as I was able to complete many laps. More good progress and now my focus will switch to plenty of work in the simulator to continue preparing for the start of the season.
John Booth, Team Principal - Marussia Virgin
Another positive and constructive day for the team. We were able to sample a wet track again and keep on testing all the different types of tyres. Timo has done an excellent job over the past two days in Barcelona, and the team is heading in the right direction. We look forward to more of the same tomorrow when Jerome picks up the reins.
Narain Karthikeyan - HRT
The weather was unfortunate today, the track was pretty damp in the morning. We also had some trouble with our gearbox so we lost a bit of time before getting out. Towards the end of the morning, the track was pretty greasy so there wasn’t much grip. But the car has improved a lot, there is much more front grip. Tonio’s feedback has definitely helped the front end of the car and we were able to clock a pretty decent time in the end.
Giorgio Mondini - HRT
I’m very happy to have driven today. It was a test to see if I was still able to drive at this level. It’s been two years since I raced competitively and physically I could really feel it. Now we must work on this.
Colin Kolles, Team Principal - HRT
Today was an interesting test day for us. The rain enabled us to test in very tricky conditions, therefore I am very happy with Narain’s performance in the morning. In the afternoon, I was very pleased to see Giorgio driving. His last time in an F1 car was in 2006 and it was nice to give him the opportunity to drive at this level again. I’m pleased to see he was setting a good pac.
