What is your ideal qualifying format ?

Post by 350Z » Mon Feb 07, 2005 2:26 pm

Was just reading about the new for 2005 qualifying system and I reckon it will be even worse than the 2004 one. For starters aggregate times will confuse everyone. Sunday morning Q, well that's something everyone will be excited about (NOT!). I've attended a few GP's and the Sunday morning was the time we took a bit of a break, now we need to be trackside to watch Q.
Ok qualifying on low fuel for Saturday is a positive but there are too many negatives with this format.

I reckon the old 12 lap system is the best we've had. To ensure the first half hour isn't wasted split into 4 quarters and each car can only make one run per quarter.
Sure small teams won't get much TV coverage but we the fans get to see drivers head to head and that is what qualifying is all about (well used to be about!).
The Montoya/Raikkonen battle is on!

I think 2 sessions, 1 30 minute session 6 laps (like old format).

The top 10 from session 1 go for a second 30 minute session immediately each for a single flying lap (like current format) with the fastest from the first session going last. Their times determine the order of the top 10.

The lower top 10 order is determined already from session 1 and they can watch in session 2 (save their tyres!!).

And no fuel restrictions

I enjoy single lap qualifying but I agree the new format could be confusing. We'll just rely on the TV timing to add things up for us but didn't we've always rely on the timing anyway!
The Sunday qualifying could be a bit of a problem. Don't know the gap between qualifying and the race but it'll be hard to watch both as the races usually start at 8 am our time :(

Sunday, Saturday, it won't matter to us here in Australia as we don't get it. Isn't it ridiculous that we don't get F1 coverage on cable and have to watch the race delayed all the time.

The format sounds ok but I prefer the old one. Give the lower 5 teams 24 laps instead of 12 laps so they can practice during the empty half hour. I am sure DC won't mind

Getting up on a Sunday morning at 7 wrecks your weekend and it takes a while to get used to watching a race that early!
Don't think I've got a chance of watching qualifying this season

We watch the Australian race at around 10 at night on Saturday. 8)

So, finally we get to see the TV schedule for Oz.

I'm surprised to see that Q1 will be shown, and a re-run at that. Pretty pointless, in my opinion...

Q2, unsurprisingly, is not being shown live. I'm guessing we'll see highlights from Q2 before the race, which, to me, is a little bit like showing a live football match from the start of the second half!

Now, I was under the impression that F1 needs more fans and wants to keep existing ones happy, clearly the new qualifying format is NOT designed to that effect.

I doubt very much that the sponsors will be too amused by it all either.

Get F1 back on the BBC, best presentation, no adverts and always shown live.

To all fans, everywhere, hope that whoever you support has a successful and safe year.

Lets see how it pans out...

P.S. Anyone wanna take side bets on JV completing the season?

Hey englishpaul you've just started here :!:
Already on the attack though :?:

I must admit that it doesn't look very good for JV at the moment but he is a fighter and he won't give up so yes I am willing to bet so pick something!

PS I agree this new qualifying is going to be a flop!

Looks like JV will be mixing it with the rookies!

And if that happens he is most likely to QUIT

Then he can enjoy working at his resturant
