Luckily he was on his inlap so he wasn't going too fast.
I just watched video from this incident. It is chilling. The only way you can tell Massa is unconscious, beside the fact that he makes no attempt to make the corner, is that his head bobs forward strangely. Thank goodness all drivers use the "Hans Device" otherwise, he may have spinal cord damage from crashing straight into the wall at unbated speed.

I believe I join everyone else on this board in wishing Felipe Massa a speedy recovery. Forza Felipe!!!

Race coverage notes:

12:36 Welcome to our race coverage of the 2009 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix

12:40 The latest on Felipe Massa's is that he is in a stable condition with no complications through the night. He will be getting another CT scan today

12:42 Race starts in under 20 minutes. Conditions are dry, partly cloudy and air temperature is at 20 degrees

12:47 Alonso starts from Pole ahead of Vettel and Webber however he is light with significantly less fuel than everyone else. His car weight is 637.5 while the rest are 650 or more. He could be on a 3 stopper

12:51 Of course Jaime Alguersuari today becomes the youngest ever Formula 1 driver. He starts in 20th place

12:53 Jenson Button starts from 8th however he is the heaviest from Q3 as he could only make 1 run in Q3 as the team had to make changes to his car as a result of Barrichello's car failure

12:56 Apologies, only 19 starters today as Felipe Massa will not be racing today due to his injuries but thankfully he is stable and we wish him a full and speedy recovery

12:58 Air temperature is now at 25 degrees. Track temperature at 43 degrees. Formation lap in 2 minutes

1:00 Formation lap underway!

1:01 KERS drivers: Hamilton starts from 4th, Kovalainen in 6th and Raikkonen in 7th, will they gain a lot of places today ?

1:02 Alonso starting on the super softs as he arrives at the starting grid

1:02 Lights!

1:03 Alonso has a good start, Hamilton gets into second but loses to Webber

1:04 It was crucial for Alonso to stay in the lead as he is very light

1:06 Vettel lost out at the start, he is in 7th

1:07 Alonse leads Webber by 2.3 seconds

1:08 Sutil is in the pits with a water pressure problem

1:09 Replay shows Raikkonen and Vettel may have touched at the start

1:09 Hamilton takes second from Webber

1:11 Hamilton now flying as he drops Webber and chases Alonso

1:11 Hamilton fastest lap so far with a 1:23.218

1:13 Fastest lap again for Hamilton with a 1:23.207

1:15 Alonso seems to have a problem with his right rear tyre. Hamilton now just 1.4 seconds behind

1:16 Now Webber comes back and sets a 1:23.190

1:19 Alonso pits early

1:21 It looks like his right wheel is loose

1:22 Alonso loses the front tyre

1:22 Alonso is limping back to the pits on 3 wheels

1:25 Luckily that flying tyre from Alonso's car didn't hit anyone!

1:26 Alonso pits again and retires

1:28 Nakajima pushing Button

1:29 Hamilton leads Webber on lap 18 by 5.1 seconds. Heidfeld makes his first pit stop

1:30 Webber and Raikkonen pit. Hamilton still out

1:31 Raikkonen gets ahead of Webber. Webber was released into the path of Raikkonen but they don't touch

1:31 Hamilton and Rosberg pit now

1:33 Replay shows a problem with Webber's pit stop as he tried to leave while the refuelling nozzle was still in

1:33 Kovalainen and Vettel make their stops

1:34 Hamilton is back in the lead, Button is second but has yet to stop - Lap 22

1:35 Trulli is 3rd and Piquet is 4th! Both yet to stop

1:36 Piquet makes his first stop

1:37 Button and Trulli are closing in on Hamilton but both have yet to stop

1:38 Button pits

1:39 Button rejoins in 12th place behind Fisichella

1:41 Vettel on the radio complaining about something broken!

1:41 Looks like Vettel has some sort of a suspension problem and he is likely to retire

1:41 Vettel pits

1:42 They have changed the front nose, checked the car and let Vettel back out

1:43 What a race! Now Trulli makes his first stop

1:43 Trulli has rejoined ahead of Button

1:44 So on lap 29, Hamilton leads from Raikkonen by 6.1 seconds. Glock is in 3rd, yet to stop

1:46 [Comment From australia ]
webber???? where is he??

1:46 Webber is currently 4th, 14.5 seconds behind Hamilton

1:47 [Comment From australia ]
thanks xoxo

1:47 Piquet is now hassling Button for 9th place

1:48 Glock (3rd), Barrichello (7th) have yet to stop

1:48 Glock pits! Kovalainen right behind Webber now

1:50 Barrichello makes his first stop. Possibly his only one

1:51 It is reported that Vettel had a front suspension problem

1:52 Doesn't look like Barrichello is on a single stop. He is down in 13th after his first stop

1:54 Webber is dropping back. He is on the soft compound and that may not be working for him

1:56 Gaps: Hamilton, Raikkonen (+6.8), Webber (+19.6), Kovalainen (+20.4), Rosberg (+21.7), Glock (+36.4), Trulli (+42.3), Button (+46.2)

1:57 Alguersuari is 16th (last)

1:58 Now Alguersuari is 15th after his teammate Buemi loses it and goes wide

1:59 It feels strange having a Ferrari chasing a McLaren for the lead of a Grand Prix

2:00 Kovalainen still right behind Webber however he is lighter and will have to pit earlier

2:01 Lap 41: Hamilton leads Raikkonen by 7.4 seconds. Webber is a further 15.2 seconds behind

2:03 McLaren ready for Hamilton ?

2:04 Button in 8th, 3.7 seconds behind Trulli but just 1.9 seconds ahead of Piquet

2:05 Hamilton doesn't pit. Looks like it is for Kovalainen

2:05 Kovalainen pits for the soft compound

2:06 Kovalainen rejoins ahead of Trulli

2:07 Raikkonen pits, it takes him a while to select gear but gets going

2:07 Now race leader Hamilton pits

2:08 Hamilton rejoins in the lead! Superb race from Hamilton

2:09 [Comment From Guest ]

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his first win of the season. Starting from 4th that was an impressive result. Even if Alonso didn't retire with the wheel going off, it would have been difficult for him to catch Hamilton after his stop.
Kimi Raikkonen was also impressive finishing in second place.
Mark Webber finished third and has now moved ahead of Vettel and closed the gap to Jenson Button in the championship but after setting the fastest lap of the race, one wonders if chosing the soft compound for the middle stint was the right decision. Second was possible today.
A good result for Nico Rosberg finishing 4th while the pressure continues to mount on Kovalainen who finished 5th after starting in 6th although 2 ahead of him retired!
Timo Glock also had a strong race. Starting 14th (13th) and managing to finish 6th is impressive indeed. He managed to jump his teammate as well as the two Brawns
Jenson Button had an ordinary race, starting 8th and only managing to move up 1 place despite two cars ahead of him retiring. He will not be pleased with this result. Only consolation is that Webber couldn't get first or second and Vettel retired.
Jarno Trulli who started 11th (qualified 12th) managed to score points but he won't be happy that his teammate who started behind him managed to finish two places ahead of him.
Nakajima and Barrichello missed out on 8th place by a second!
Piquet finished 12th, this is probably his last race with Renault. Perhaps also in Formula 1
Well done to Alguersuari for finishing his first Formula 1 race and finishing ahead of his teammate Buemi

It is reported that Renault have been suspended for 1 race as a result of Alonso's car losing a wheel and the team not informing Alonso that the wheel was loose.

Stewards ban Renault from Valencia GP

My thoughts are with Massa. I really hope that he fully recovers. Very very unlucky!

Was looking good for Alonso for a while but it seems he already had problems then the tyre stuff up! That tyre flying in the air was dangerous but not sure if banning them for 1 race is fair. They should let them race without Constructor points

Timo Glock was the driver of the day for me

my driver of the day was Glock.
Webbo was the first non kers car home !
I agree with JayVee, let them run, without constructors points, banning them penalises the fans.
Fingers crossed for Massa, and my prayers go with him. It is a bloody dangerous sport, and we don't need any more reminders.

In total agreement. The news from the hospital sounds good and we can only continue hoping and praying that he will have a speedy and complete recovery.
DotD..... not sure. Webbo, as JM pointed out, was the top non KERS driver. I thought Alonso was going to win for a while but that was short lived. Might have to think about this one a bit longer.

Once again, the Hungaroring produces another interesting result. For sure Fernando Alonso would have pulled out a victory had he not imitated another Renault driver in losing a wheel while leading a race (Rene Arnoux in 1982 @ Zandvoort, NZ).

Image

Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton for a superb victory. He pulled out such a lead, the TV producers stop following his car and showed a lot of other on-track battles. Is McLaren truly back though?

:1st:

Kimi Räikkönen drove well enough to finish 2nd benefiting from Mark Webber's troublesome pitstop.

:2nd: :o

Mark Webber gets 2 thumbs up for capitalizing on his recent form and pulling into 2nd place in the WDC standings ahead of wunderkind Sebastien Vettel.

:3rd:

My Driver of the Day was Lewis Hamilton for making it look like 2008. My DotD runner up was Timo Glock for once again passing the most cars in the race.

My Ironman of the Day was Nico Rosberg who despite the distractions once again quietly came in 4th.

Could it e that Brawn GP is finally out of gas?

My thoughts are with felipe, I hope he is able to return this season and reap the benefits of the much improved Ferrari. Like the McLaren it has come on leaps and bounds in the last few races.

Lewis was in indomitable form yesterday, with considerably more fuel he tore into Fernando's early lead at the rate of a second a lap. Had Fernando managed to retain his wheel he would have been very fortunate to make a top four finish. The way the car ate its tyres betrayed the fact that it was just not up to the job.

Mark Webber's fastest lap 1m21.931s as opposed to Lewis' 1m22.479s would seem to suggest that the McLaren is indeed still 0.5s off the pace of the Red Bull. However Lewis set his fastest lap on lap 16 and Mark on lap 65, a time when track conditions - particularly those found in Hungary - would be more conducive to setting a fast time.

I noticed Lewis make a stab at retaining the fastest lap around the same time as Mark set his fastest. Lewis set the fastest first sector time of the race after having been consistently 0.3s slower in that sector on the previous laps of that stint. He had been conserving his car for quite some time. His middle sector went away from him and he didn't try a fastest lap again after that.

In the early part of the race Lewis was setting 1m22s whilst Mark was setting 1m23s consistently 0.5s slower but Mark was only carrying 1.5kg more fuel!!! Both cars had a car in front of them producing dirty air, this would suggest that McLaren has considerably better race pace than the Red Bull at least on circuits with characteristics similar to Hungary.

If this is the case them Valencia could well favour the Mclaren and perhaps by the time we get to Spa and Monza McLaren will have more aero developments that Lewis can utilise.

All in all it looks as though the Red Bull's have really got their work cut out overhauling the Brawn's even if the Brawn does continue to struggle for developments and pace.
Lewis Hamilton & Jenson Button World Champions :)

Alonso had a fuel problem prior to his tyre problem and that is the reason for the drop in his pace and for his retirement. Had he not had either of these problems he would have challenged for the win but we'll never know.

So unlucky as the Renault has been so reliable! Oh well at least we know that he has a car that can go fast now and I hope we see him in Valencia
