Diaz, Pruett take pole in Long Beach

Post by mlittle » Sat Apr 08, 2006 1:06 pm

For the second time this year, the duo of Scott Pruett and Luis Diaz(#01 CompUSA/Ganassi Lexus/Riley) will start their Daytona Prototype on the pole for Saturday's Crown Royal Long Beach Challenge, the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series' first-ever street race. Diaz, who has two starts here from his Atlantic Championship days(2002, 2003; best finish of 6th from 2003), set a time of 1:19.891(88.681 mph). But the Mexican native says a lot of the help goes to teammate Pruett, who has a long history at this track, from his Trans-Am and CART days. "Scott tells me little tricks about every track he's been to and how it can make me faster. He's a great co-driver and I am lucky that he's on my team. It was tricky getting used to these cars on this tight track, but if there's anyone that can help me through it, it's Scott."

They'll have plenty of competition in what is shaping up to be a very tight championship DP class; the top-10 are separated by 16 pts. after three races. Starting on the front-row besides the Ganassi duo will be Porsche works drivers Patrick Long and Mike Rockenfeller, as their #23 Hirewise/Alaska Seafoods Porsche/Crawford set a time of 1:20.080 mph(88.472 mph), followed by the #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley of Jan Magnussen and Max "the Axe" Angelelli. Rounding out the top-5 were the former ChampCar duo of Michael McDowell and Memo Gidley(#19 Playboy/Uniden/Palms Ford/Crawford) in 4th, while another pair of former ChampCar alums, Mario Haberfeld and Adrian Fernandez(#12 Lowe's Hardware Pontiac/Riley) will start in 5th.

As for the race.....it's set for around 7:00 EDT(4:00 local PST), with same-day tape-delay broadcast on Speed Channel at 9:00 EST Saturday, April 8th.

Wild Sprint Race at the Beach....

Post by mlittle » Sun Apr 09, 2006 1:27 pm

Champ Car fans got to see, besides the heroes in their series on the tight confines of Long Beach, the Daytona Prototypes and the heroes of the Rolex Sports Car Series, and despite lots of caution time, there actually was a race to be won. At the drop of the green, it was the #01 CompUSA Lexus/Riley piloted by Luis Diaz who got the drop on the field in what was arguably one of the worst starts by a DP grid in Rolex action. After leading for 5 laps, he surrendered the lead on a slick pass through turn 1 by Patrick Long in the #23 Hirewise/Alaska Seafoods Porsche/Crawford, who led through lap 11 when a very scary crash brought out the first caution.

What happened to precipate it was IMHO a very idiotic move by the #8 car, driven by Burt Frisselle. After having gearbox issues, Frisselle was attempting to get out of the driving lane when he was blindsided by first the #37 Crown Royal Porsche/Crawford of Eddie Cheever, Jr. and then by the #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley of Rocky Moran, Jr.; Mario Haberfeld in the #12 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley was also involved as well. All the drivers were okay, but Moran was taken to the infield car center, diagnosed w/a bruised leg, a sprained right ankle and some minor contusions. Why was Frisselle's move idiotic? On most tracks, the cars will stay to the left when a slower car moves right. At Long Beach, though, the frontstraight curves right, thus when Frisselle moved right.....you get the idea.

After a lengthy caution for track cleanup and fluid removal, the green came back out and the DPs' were back at it, this time w/Mike Rockenfeller in the #23 and LB veteran Scott Pruett in the #01(Pruett in his CC days started in 9 LBGP races and won a Trans-Am race back in 1987). Once Pruett got around Rockenfeller, though, it was lights out on the field as Pruett cruised to a near-4 sec. win over Rockenfeller. The race everyone watched late, though, was btwn. Butch Leitzinger in the #4 The Boss Snowplow Pontiac/Crawford and Bill Auberlen in the #3 USSports BMW/Riley. While Leitzinger threw everything the #4 had in it at Auberlen, the veteran BMW works racer held onto the podium, the best finish for the privateer Southard Mtrspts. crew. Rounding out the top-5 were the duo of Mark Patterson and Oswaldo Negri in the #60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley.

The Rolex Series moves onto the challenging Virginia International Raceay in Alton, Va. for the next round of Rolex comeptition the weekend of April 21-23.

McDowell wins first-ever qual. race at VIR

Post by mlittle » Mon Apr 24, 2006 1:08 am

This year, the Rolex Sports Car Series added something new.....qualifying races to several events; points-paying, 30-minutes races that set the grid for the 2-3 hrs. endurance races the next day. First stop......Virginia Intl. Raceway's VIR 400, and in a fast-paced 30-min. QR, it was the #19 Playboy/Uniden Ford/Crawford piloted by Michael McDowell who won, beating back challenges from the #01 CompUSA Lexus/Riley of Scott Pruett and the #23 Hirewise/Emory Porsche/Crawford of Mike Rockenfeller. Rounding out the top-5 were Jorg Bergmeister in the #76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley in 4th and the #39 Crown Royal Porsche/Crawford driven by Christian Fittipaldi. Thus, the top-5 starters for Sunday's race is as follows.........

1}Guy Cosmo(*)..............#19 Playboy/Uniden Ford/Crawford
2}Patrick Long..................#23 Hirewise/Emory Porsche/Crawford
3}Rob Finlay.....................#5 Make-A-Wish/Air Force Reserve Ford/Crawford
4}Colin Braun...................#76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley
5}Eddie Cheever, Jr...........#39 Crown Royal Porsche/Crawford
(Note....Grand-Am rules require that the driver who didn't compete in Saturday's qualifying race must start the feature race; however, they will be credited with the points earned from the QR once they've completed one green flag lap)

Meanwhile, over in the Grand Touring(GT) class, Wolf Henzler had an easy trip to the checkers, piloting the #72 NEC Porsche 911 GT3 to the win. Following him in second was the #65 TRG Pontiac GTO-R of Andy Lally, then the #17 SAMAX Porsche 911 GT3 of Robert Bell. Rounding out the top-5 were Joey Hand in the #21 Gleason Financial BMW M3 and Charles Espenlaub in the #74 Rembrandt Porsche 911 GT3; thus, their top-5 for Sunday's race goes like this....

1}Robin Liddell.........................#72 NEC Porsche 911 GT3

Rockenfeller, Long win last-lap thriller at VIR

Post by mlittle » Mon Apr 24, 2006 12:44 pm

For every lap but the last one, it looked like a duel btwn. the duo of Wayne Taylor/Max Angelelli(#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley) and Scott Pruett/Luis Diaz(#01 CompUSA Lexus/Riley). But close only counts in things like.....horseshoes and hand grenades. Just ask the pair who won the race, Mike Rockenfeller and Patrick Long, who piloted the #23 Hirewise/Emory Porsche/Crawford to the checkers in the VIR 400 at Virginia International Raceway. What happened.....

With five turns to go on the final lap, the three cars(#10, #01 and #23) where jostling their DP's(Daytona Prototypes) for the win when the threesome come up upon a stray GT car which had spun out. The #10 and the #01 start bangin' on each other, and in the confusion, Rockenfeller, in the #23, slipped past both of them and stole' a victory, Alex Job Racing's second of the 2006 Rolex season. Meanwhile, in the GT(Grand Touring) class, it was a 1-2 victory for Pontiac as first and second were taken by The Racers' Group, with Andy lally and Marc Bunting winning in the #65 TRG Pontiac GTO-R, and their teammates Paul Edwards and Kelly Collins took second in the #64 TRG Pontiac GTO-R.

Next stop for the Rolex Sports Car Series......Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, for the U.S. Sports Car Invitational, May 5-7.

Post by mlittle » Sun May 07, 2006 1:29 pm

First, Homestead.....then VIR......now the qualifying race at Laguna Seca for Sunday's U.S. Sports Car Invitational Road & Track 250, as the Alex Job Racing duo of Patrick Long and Mike Rockenfeller(#23 Ruby Tuesday Porsche/Crawford) won the QR at Laguna Seca this afternoon. Long started on the pole, checked out on the field and it was, as the saying goes, "all she wrote" for everyone else, as he would win in the DP class by almost a second over the #60 Flight Options Lexus/Riley driven by Oswaldo Negri, Jr. Rounding out the top-5 in Daytona Prototypes were the #89 Playboy/Uniden/Palms Pontiac/Riley of Ryan Dalziel from Pacific Coast Mtrspts., its' sister car, the #19 piloted by Michael McDowell and Max "the Axe" Angelelli in the #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley. When the feature race starts tomorrow at 3 PM US EDT, the top-5 starting order will look like this.....

DP-1}Mike Rockenfeller...................#23 Ruby Tuesday Porsche/Crawford

DP-4}Guy Cosmo............................#19 Playboy/Uniden/Palms Ford/Crawford
DP-5}Jan Magnussen.......................#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley

Meanwhile, in the GT class, Kelly Collins fought off a hard-charging Robin Liddell to give The Racers' Group a 1-2 finish in their QR, putting the Pontiac GTO-R in GT-P1 and GT-P2, as teammate Andy Lally passed Liddell late to capture 2nd. Here is the GT top-5 for Sunday's race.....

The SunTrust duo win in Monterey

Post by mlittle » Tue May 09, 2006 1:24 am

With yesterday's action now in the rearview mirrors, here's a glimpse of what happened Sunday at the U.S. Sports Car Invitational--Road & Track 250, round 5 of the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series.....

In the Daytona Prototype(DP) class, it was the #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley piloted by Jan Magnussen and Max Angelelli who won a hard-fought battle to take the win for the team, Angelelli's first since the Crown Royal 250 at Watkins Glen last year, and Magnussen's first in Rolex action since the 2004 Crown Royal 200, also at Watkins Glen. In order to win, though, they had to hold off the #23 Ruby Tuesday Porsche/Crawford of Mike Rockenfeller and Patrick Long, who dominated the qual. race Saturday and looked set to dominate the feature....until gearbox issues set them several laps back with 50 minutes to go in the 2 hr., 45 min. race. Coming up in the runner-up spot was the #99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley of Jon Fogarty/Alex Gurney, a remarkable finish for them considering they suffered chassis damage early on from contact w/a GT car. Rounding out the podium in third were Colin Braun and Jorg Bergmeister in the #76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley. Here is the top-5 finishing order from the race......

DP-1}Max Angelelli, Jan Magnussen...........................#10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley
DP-2}Alex Gurney, Jon Fogarty.................................#99 Gainsco Pontiac/Riley
DP-3}Colin Braun, Jorg Bergmeister...........................#76 Krohn Racing Ford/Riley
DP-4}Michael McDowell, Guy Cosmo..........................#19 Playboy/Uniden/Palms Ford/Crawford
DP-5}David Donohue, Darren Law.............................#58 RedBull/Brumos Porsche/Fabcar

Meanwhile....................over in the Grand Touring(GT) class, it was a nip-and-tuck fight btwn. the Pontiac GTO-R and Porsche 911 GT3, with the Porsche of Wolf Henzler and Robin Liddell(#72 NEC Porsche 911 GT3) that won the GT class, closely followed by the Pontiac GTO-R of Andy Lally and Marc Bunting(#65 The Racers' Group Pontiac GTO-R). Here are the top-5 from the GT category.................

GT-1}Wolf Henzler, Robin Liddell.........................#72 NEC Porsche 911 GT3
GT-2}Andy Lally, Marc Bunting............................#65 The Racers' Group Pontiac GTO-R
GT-3}Ian James, Ryan Hunter-Reay....................#17 SAMAX Porsche 911 GT3
GT-4}Kelly Collins, Paul Edwards.........................#64 The Racers' Group Pontiac GTO-R
GT-5}Bill Auberlen, Matt Alhadeff.........................#05 MOTUL/enVista BMW M3

Round 6 of the Rolex Sports Car Series takes place in the stadium-road course of Phoenix International Raceway for the Gainsco Grand Prix the weekend of May 11-13, 2006.

Ganassi duo takes win in the desert

Post by mlittle » Mon May 15, 2006 12:19 pm

2004 Rolex Series DP class co-champion Scott Pruett retook the points lead alongside co-driver Luis Diaz as the #01 CompUSA Lexus/Riley took the overall win at the Gainsco Grand Prix, at Phoenix Intl. Raceway's "stadium road course". For most of the race in Daytona Prototypes, it looked as though the #12 Lowe's Pontiac/Riley of Adrian Fernandez/Mario Haberfeld or the #10 SunTrust Pontiac/Riley of Max "the Axe" Angelelli and Jan Magnussen would prevail, but pit miscue on the part of the #10 crew and an off-course excursion for the #12 helped give the CompUSA/Ganassi team a much needed win in the Arizona desert.

Meanwhile, over in the Grand Touring(GT) class, it was all smiles in the Pontiac Mtrspts. camp as the Pontiac GTO-R swept the podium in GT, with Paul Edwards/Kelly Collins(#64 TRG/i-Rise Pontiac GTO-R) led the way, followed closely by the #65 TRG/F1 Air Pontiac GTO-R of Andy Lally/Marc Bunting, who still hold a slim lead in the GT stdgs. Rounding out the podium was the #98 PCM Pontiac GTO-R of Boris Said/Ross Thompson.

For the DP class, they get a round to rest, while the GT drivers will head to Lime Rock Park the weekend of May 27-29 for the New England GT Challenge, which will be on Speed Channel Memorial Day(May 29) at 2:30 PM US EDT. Both classes will return to the track June 3 for the Sahlen's 6 Hrs. at the Glen.

Little Al to race in Grand-Am this year.....

Post by mlittle » Wed May 24, 2006 12:51 pm

Back in 1982, "Little" Al Unser, Jr. won the Can-Am sports-car title in a Frisselle-perpared entry. Could history repeat itself?

According to the "Rumors" page at ar1.com, the Frisselle brothers, Burt and Brian, have approached Unser, Jr. in the hopes that he'll drive for them for the remainder of the 2006 Rolex Sports Car Series in their Porsche/Doran Daytona Prototype. It does appears that Little Al may be back in competitive racing.

Confirmed as well; according to speedtv.com, Little Al will drive for Synergy Racing in the #8 A1Team USA/GlycoMax Porsche/Doran at the upcoming 6 Hours of the Glen, which will be the same weekend as the IRL race at Watkins Glen.

Post by mlittle » Tue May 30, 2006 2:35 pm

With all the excitement from 16th & Georgetown(a/k/a Indy) still wafting through the States', one forgets that there was a bit' of racing today, as the Rolex Sports Car Series' Grand Touring(GT) class took to the challenging Lime Rock Park race circuit(the Daytona Prototype/DP class took the round off), and for the second straight round, it was a Pontiac GTO-R in 1st and 2nd for the running of the New England GT Challenge. The Racers' Group duo of Andy Lally and Marc Bunting(#65 TRG/F1 Air Pontiac GTO-R) took the win, leading their TRG teammates Kelly Collins and Paul Edwards(#64 TRG/i-Rise Pontiac GTO-R). ROunding out the podium was the Porsche 911 GT3 of Wolf Henzler and Robin Liddell(#72 NEC/Rembrandt Porsche 911 GT3), Here are the top-5 from the New England GT Challenge.......
