Rolex Test Sessions....................

Post by mlittle » Mon Oct 30, 2006 6:13 pm

Prior to the 2007 Rolex Sports Car Series season, there will be a couple of pre-season test sessions.........

~~6-7 November 2006--Daytona Intl. Speedway(9 am-noon and 1-5 pm on 6 Nov.; 9-12 and 1-4:30 pm on 7 Nov.)
~~5-6 December 2006}Homestead-Miami Sppedway(9 am-noon and 1-4:30pm both days)
~~4-6 January 2007--Daytona Intl. Speedway(schedule tba...)

The above tests are relevant for two reasons......1-they are a reasonable guide to how competitive the season will be, and 2-they give an idea as to who will be competing in which entry/series/etc...

November Test day 1 notebook.........

Post by mlittle » Wed Nov 08, 2006 2:48 am

With one successful day of testing at the "World Center of Racing", here are some of the highlights of Monday's Rolex 24 November Test Day......

1}The fastest of them...........In Daytona Prototypes, the honors went to SunTrust Racing's Max "the Axe" Angelelli(1:43.728 sec) and Alex Job Racing's Patrick Long(1:44.203 sec), while over in Grand Touring the honors went to Tafel Racing's Wolf Henzler(1:52.982 sec).

2}Some new faces at the wheel..............Two new drivers to the Rolex Series turned their first laps in the 500+ hp Daytona Prototypes, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series veteran Bill Lester and ChampCar World Series rookie Katherine Legge; Lester turned laps with Michael Shank Racing, while Legge made her DP debut with Robinson Racing yesterday. Here's what the two of them had to say about their day.........

Bill Lester, Michael Shank Racing:
Grand-Am has such a good formula; I like the fact that teams don't neccessarily have to outspend everyone to win, and Michael Shank Racing has shown that. My roots are in road racing and this race has been on my mind for quite some time now and I hope that they'll be pleased enough with my performance today to ask me back for the race.
Katherine Legge, Robinson Racing:
Obviously its' one of those races that no matter where you are in the world you've heard of. It's definitely something I've wanted to get involved in. It was a lot of fun. I don't want to do anything stupid; I'm getting used to the car and which way the track turns. It's very different from what I'm used to. The team's doing a great job, and obviously Paul's (Dallenbach) being very helpful with all of his experience.
3}6 days and counting...........Counting the five earlier days of testing they've already done, Alex Job Racing has been on a near-literal testing tear, and they made more news Monday, announcing their intent to run a 2-car Daytona Prototype team beginning at Homestead in late March; their complete driver lineup will be announced at a later date(it's expected that Mike Rockenfeller and Patrick Long will field the team's #23 Ruby Tuesday entry; their second driver lineup is unknown at present.

4}Is one better than the other? Cheever Racing turned heads Monday fielding two entries with different chassis; one a Fabcar, the other a Crawford. Assisting them in determining which chassis to use, ironically, is the team that formerly possessed the Fabcar chassis they're using....Red Bull/Brumos Racing, which ran that particular chassis through most of the 2006 Rolex season.

November Test Day 2 notebook(from Tuesday.....)

Post by mlittle » Thu Nov 09, 2006 12:29 pm

With the sun setting on the second day of testing at the "World Center of Racing", here's a quick brief on the day's major news(the mid-term elections here in the U.S. not withstanding......)......

1}The King is the Grand Marshal.......in most forms of racing(open-wheel, stock-car, sportscar racing, etc.) there's a legend that transcends that particular area of the sport(think Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Mario Andretti, James Weaver, etc...) American stock-car racing has one in the guise of "the King", Randleman, NC-born Richard Petty(who won 200 stockcar races in his career..... ). Grand-Am officials named Petty as Grand Marshal of the 45th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

2}More new faces...............Michael Shank Racing added two familiar open-wheel faces to the Rolex 24, as they named 2-time Indy 500 winner Helio Castroneves and 2006 Indy 500 winner/3-time IRL series champion Sam Hornish, Jr. to their roster of drivers for January's race.

3}Fastest time........in the Daytona Prototype class, the honors went to Krohn Racing's Colin Braun(1:43.947 sec); times from Grand Touring were slower than on Monday, so Monday's top GT times stood.

Pictures from the test..............

December Testing.........

Post by mlittle » Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:47 pm

One down, and two to go...........

While most of North America(including the Carolinas....... ) continues through the off-season, teams and drivers are headed down to sunny South Florida(......... :x .......) for the second of two Rolex Sports Car Series tests, on the infield road course at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Nearly 40 teams from both the Daytona Prototype and Grand Touring classes will be on-hand. The upcoming test, scheduled for 5-6 December, are designed to do two things........
1--continue acclimating drivers/teams for the upcoming season
2--help tire supplier Hoosier decide the appropriate tire compounds for the season

Here is the entry list as of 3 December 2006........

While many of the Rolex Series regulars, such as Wayne Taylor, Max Angelelli, Andy Wallace and others, will be there, some new faces are expected...........such as 4-time Nextel Cup champion Jeff Gordon, 3-time IRL and 2006 Indy 500 champion Sam Hornish, Jr. and ChampCar driver Alex Tagliani.

Homestead Test Day 1 Notebook.........

Post by mlittle » Thu Dec 07, 2006 10:21 am

Here are some of the news and notes from day 1 of the December Test at Homestead-Miami Speedway..............

~~Fastest of the day overall class was the #19 Finaly Mtrspts. Ford/Crawford piloted by Michael Valiante, who edged out fellow Canadian Patrick Carpentier in the #11 CITGO/SAMAX Pontiac/Riley(Valiante's time was 1:14.151 sec, Carpentier's was a 1:14.162 sec)
*-note, both times above came from the Daytona Prototype class; no official times were recorded

~~First times..........for Indy 500 winners Juan Pablo Montoya and Sam Hornish, Jr., it was a first time, as the pair spent time acclimating to the closed-roof Daytona Prototypes(by all accounts, Hornish was faster than JPM....). While Hornish has already been confirmed as a driver for the Rolex 24, JPM's status for the race is still uncertain....

~~Double-dipping........For veteran sportscar racer Andy Wallace, it was a double-dip sort of day; first, he tested the Howard Mtrspts. Pontiac/Crawford, then, headed over to HLM Mtrspts. and tested the new Infiniti G35 GT car later in the day. When asked about the difference, Wallace remarked.....
I don't have much experience with GT cars; most of my experience is in (prototypes) over the years, but my impressions of the car are very good. The car is very comfortable to drive and its' very quick, particulary through the oval portion of the track. The biggest difference is that you can't turn and brake with a GT car as you can the Daytona Prototype; you have to brake and then turn the GT car. That caused a few anxious moments in the morning, and it's an adjustment, but it is a lot of fun.
~~We're just looking for drivers, 'at's all......For the SAMAX Mtrspts. team, that's exactly what they were doing Tuesday; in addition to Carpentier and veteran sportscar race Milka Duno, the team also tested Ryan Hunter-Reay, Darren Manning, Ryan Dalziel, Jeff Bucknum and Tom Kimber-Smith............when asked about who would the team's 2 Daytona Prototypes, team owner Peter Baron replied that "while the #11 crew(Duno, Carpentier) was set for the Rolex 24, the lineup of the #7 was still unclear; Baron was impressed, according to reports, with Kimber-Smith, who ran P8 of better for the entire day's testing, remarkable in that Kimber-Smith, a former Formula Ford winner in the UK, had never driven a DP-class racecar until yesterday.

Homestead Test Day 2 notebook......

Post by mlittle » Thu Dec 07, 2006 5:10 pm

With the December Test at Homested-Miami Speedway now in the books, here's the day's news and notes........

~~Here's the transcript of the media teleconference involving Nextel Cup champions Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson, 3-time IRL champion and 2006 Indy 500 winner Sam Hornish, Jr. and Michael Shank, owner of Michael Shank Racing.

~~Fastest of the day........that honor, once again, went to Finlay Mtrspts.'s Michael Valiante with a time(unofficially) of 1:13.884; second-fastest was Max "the Axe" Angelelli with a time of 1:13.910 sec.

~~Their eyes on the watch.......Granted, NASCAR's Jeff Gordon(4-time Nextel Cup winner) and Jimmie Johnson(2006 Nextel Cup champion) and 3-time IRL and 2006 Indy 500 winner Sam Hornish, Jr. have earned their fair share of hardware over the years, but all three have their eyes set on one of the biggest prizes in motorsports....the unique Rolex Cosmograph watch that goes to the overall winners of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and all three put in plenty of test laps at Homestead-Miami Speedway today

~~Looking for the big mo' in 2007.......While they've been successful in single-seaters, AIM Autosport has begun looking at the Rolex Sports Car Series as another place to build a successful endeavour, and they did their bit today, testing an updated 2004-spec Lexus/Riley the team purchased from Ganassi Racing(which won the 2004 DP class title) with drivers Mark Wilkins, Brian Frisselle and Burt Fisselle. By all accounts, the team had a successful test and are looking forward to challenging for the win in Daytona come late January.

Some photos from the two-day test session at Homestead.........
