19 February: Sauber commence 3 day test at Imola. Minardi conduct their final pre-season test. Testing commenced at Imola today for the Sauber team in preparation for the first Grand Prix of the season in Melbourne. The Minardi F1 team also conducted their final pre-season test here. Felipe Massa set the fastest time of the day with a 1:23.485 ahead of team-mate Jacques Villeneuve and Patrick Friesacher. Massa also covered the most number of laps with 106. Sauber's Chief Race Engineer Jacky Eeckelaert said "Today Felipe ran an aerodynamic
programme and compared different front wings. Part of this was the assessment of a newly developed front wing being a result of our
wind tunnel work. Beside this Felipe tested Michelin tyres for the Malaysian Grand Prix. Jacques worked on further set-up
improvements and thereby concentrated on a new traction control software. Minardi's Team Principal Paul Stoddart said "This has been a very useful final pre-season test for the team. Christijan and Patrick were assigned different tasks today, but both did exactly what was required and provided the team’s technical staff with some useful data. It has also been a worthwhile personal exercise for both drivers, in that they have now accumulated some experience of the Imola circuit in a Formula One car, which should stand them in good stead when they return here for the San Marino Grand Prix." Sauber continues testing at Imola tomorrow. On Monday Williams, McLaren and Ferrari will commence testing at Valencia to be joined by Toyota and BAR on Tuesday. Renault will start their final test on Monday at Silverstone. Formula 1 Team notes and reports below Imola Times (as reported by the Sauber team)
