8 February: First day of testing at Jerez - Massa fastest Another mega test commenced today for the Formula 1 teams in preparation for the start of the Formula 1 season in Melbourne early March. All teams were present with the exception of Jordan (who are testing solo at Silverstone) and Minardi. Felipe Massa in the Sauber set the fastest time of the day with a time of 1:17.501 ahead of Jarno Trulli and Ricardo Zonta both driving Toyotas. Massa's time is the fastest so far in a 2005 spec car but is nearly 1.5 seconds slower than the fastest time this year set by Wurz in the McLaren MP4/19 8 Teams were present today with 17 drivers setting lap times. The track was damp from overnight rain and the teams had to alter their testing programmes. Testing started on wet and intermediate tyres before switching to dry tyres around midday. Takuma Sato's car suffered a rear wing failure causing him to spin and crash into the barriers. He was unhurt but the car sustained substantial damage. Nelson Piquet Junior made his Formula 1 test debut today with BAR. He was 16th fastest with a best time of 1:20.855. Unfortunately he went off in the afternoon damaging his car and putting an early end to his test. Testing continues tomorrow. Formula 1 Team notes and reports below
